MJD vs Freddy T

My question is...  How much longer before Maurice Jones-Drew is the feature back and Fred Taylor is the complimentary back?

Or does anyone think they are pretty much in equivilant positions on the team?

I think it's about time for MJD to be the starter and receive more of the carries, and start phasing Taylor out a bit.  He still has it, but I believe Jones-Drew, at this point, is a better back.  Just want to hear other opinions.

As is right now, its split almost 50-50 on carries, except short yardage when MJD is the clear favorite. Today showed what he can do when given the primary role. The only thing is how can he hold up in a 16 game season as a 20-25 carry guy?

as a 3rd down back....

the dude has 31 TDs in 38 games. I’d put money on him being able to handle it.

Greg Jones

Should compliment MJD when he becomes the feature back…I think MJD has it in him, and the longer he can watch the great Freddy T and be tutored under his wing, the more successful he will be in the long term. As long as Freddy T still “has it” then the Jags need to “use it” because that will also prolong MJD’s career in Jax.

Go Jags! Some people are like Slinky's...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

I agree

with both comments so far. They are carrying half a load each, but I think MJD can easily carry the load of a full season. He is built SOLID and I haven’t seen much damage caused to him and he takes some pretty big hits (but delivers more :)) I’m not sure about Greg Jones being complimentary to MJD. They’re both pounders. But Greg Jones IS a solid back and I never want to see him leave, although I figure he’ll want a chance to start for some team soon. I’m not saying get rid of Taylor, but limit him to maybe 33% as MJD has more big play ability nowadays.

I say MJD is a pounder, but he’s so much more. I think we should coin a new type to describe him. I think he’s a pinballer… he falls/runs backwards/plows/bounces for more yards than anyone ever!

bowler

would work too.

If Greg Jones is as selfless

as the coaching staff has eluded he wont leave here anytime soon especially because he was just resigned to the biggest FB contract ever.
BTW technically he is starting, but as a FB.
I think he realizes his best shot at excelling is in the role he is playing now: running and catching a little, both of which he is good at; but he is a great blocker.
The role he is playing now is also probably reducing the injury risk to his knees.(He’s had knee injuries in the past)
He can become a pro bowler if he stays here and continues doing what he’s doing, that’s assuming ofcourse that somone actually pays attention to us.
I’ll be damned if Lorenzo Neal gets it again. Although running games seem to be following him. Notice the Chargers lack of a run game and the Titans improved run game. lol I’m mostly kidding. LT is dinged up with a dinged up O line and the Titans are healthy with new improved o lineman and the great addition of Chris Johnson.

Fullback

Yeah i wasn’t thinking much about him as a fullback. It’s surprising that he is SO great at both blocking and running. Most true fullbacks, can’t run very well except smashing up in the hole and falling forward. He can definitely play tailback too.

I’ve heard the term “slasher” used most to describe his style. I think the 50/50 split is just fine since the 2 backs have contrasting styles. Also keep in mind that Maurice is also getting more touches as a reciever. I just wish Fred could have played the whole game. If he had, I’m sure both of them would have passed 100 yards. Fred can still do some things Maurice can’t do and vice versa. Tandem running backs like fred and Maurice just make each-other better.

Slasher

doesn’t really fit, to me. But of course it’s all just made up names anyways. None of it is definitive. Slashers don’t usually put their head down and run over people. I see them as small, speedsters usually.

I liked seeing Greg Jones get some play time...

it’s a shame that was it. After Fred went out, between MJD and Greg the defense was on their heels. Just straight forward pounding the rock with no dancing around. Hell, Greg even knocked one guy out of the game for a while. Pinball rocked ‘em today for almost 6 yards a carry and 2 TDs.
One big ’Mile High Salute’ to you Mr. Jones-Drew, you earned it.

The Salute

was great. He definitely pissed off a lot of Broncos fans I’m sure. One of my friends texted me during the game saying that “J-D is so cocky” This was just after the announcers were talking about how everyone loves him and he’s a great interview and all. So I had to explain to her that she’s getting the wrong impression.

Fred

Whats wrong with Talor this year? He has gone back to hesitating before he hits the hole this year like he did a couple years ago. Last year he stopped doing that and just blasted through the line and he had an awsome year . I am not saying bench him or demote him yet because I would much rather have him on our team than to have to play against him but something is wrong with him and somebody needs to fix him.

by Kenzster on Oct 13, 2008 12:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

exactly

what i noticed too. However, when Taylor has played the whole game, he had matched MJD yard for yard. So maybe there really hasn’t been much running room there. He is definitely a back who needs a hole to start, because he is a patient runner. MJD seems to just make his own holes. He hits the line fullspeed usually.

Taylor is KING!!

You realize your talking about Jaguar Royalty? Just a few weeks ago he destroyed the Colts and had one of the most amazing runs I’ve seen in years. A shining example of individual effort, Fred hasn’t lost it, our offensive line is not the same. One of the best run blocking guards in the NFL is on IR (Manuwai), and we’ve lost countless others… don’t you think that is the real culprit? I hope Fred remains the featured back until his contract expires…

I think

Freddy should for at least old times sake start. He is still a good back. A great back. But as a slasher, cutter what ever you want to call him he hasn’t been in his element. this is because of the 8 and 9 man fronts that congest and shrink the field. Runners like him need a little more space. That wont happen until we get a stronger more mobile line, which it hasn’t been with Milford Brown playing, and a better down field passing game.
When that happens FT is one of the best in the league, maybe even the best. IMO he still needs to get his carries. Drew is more liable to get hurt if he’s in there too much.
What I did like seeing though was that when Drew was in the game for as long as he was people couldn’t key in on him like they would normally. So effectively it helped mask when he was or wasn’t going to get the ball. Whereas before when he would come into the game he would become our main target and people knew that and therefore reduced the effectiveness of one of our best offensive threats.
If for no other reason this tandem helps ST (it allows MJD to get the ball more often on returns, which also make Spoon more effective)and it helps the Jags front office in negotiations when it comes time to resign and pay him.

Watch what happens next game

I think MJD’s success this week will spur Fred’s competitive spirit just like it did at the beginning of last season. Not saying that Fred doesn’t play his hardest all the time, but it seems like having MJD around makes him push himself just a bit harder. Not to mention he is going to be gunnin’ hard for that 11,000 yard mark. I’m expecting big things from him in the next few games. Don’t forget what he did to Indy this year.

Very true. No better way to get a franchise TD record and the 11,000 yard mark with something like a 50 yard TD run.

actually,

as much as I would love to see Fred and MoJo light it up on our next opponent, I think JDR will do what he has been doing after our RBs do great……forget that they exist in the next game. They will probably go back to 6 or 7 carries apiece. I thought after Indi. we would see more awesome running, but Jack musta’ fell and hit his head.

It was the situation

I think you may have underestimated just how bad the Colts run was. Facing a Texan 8/9 man front wasn’t going to get us anywhere. In fact I thought we should have passed more often considering how weak their secondary was and they were daring us to go deep and gave us the opportunity. The Pitt D was tackling well, and they are a good run to begin with, And they played against us as if they knew everything there was to know about our run game. They did their homework. Also when we would try to do something differnt in the run game often times Milford Brown screwed things up often times not staying with his block because he has no mobility.

Yeah but, ...

don’t get me wrong, but we lost those games. I remember seeing ’ The Great One’ , Barry Sanders get shut down and held to like 17 yards one Sunday when I was in college. But to their credit the Lions kept on running. If your gonna’ go down, go down fighting with what got you there. MJD for one yard, MJD for 2 yards, MJD for -1 yard, etc……… MJD for 42 and paydirt. He won’t get it on the first run, or maybe the first 10 runs but sooner or later even the best defense cracks to a great runner.

I never like to quote Dan Dierdorf....

but he nailed it Sunday. With 10:59 left, after David was sacked, Dan said," Something you don’t see everyday is a team protecting a 2 touchdown lead in the 4th quarter, throwing the ball 3 consecutive times."
That was after Drew had almost 90 yards rushing……3 straight passes…. when you need to burn the clock and protect a lead. Pass it around Jack and let everybody have a hit. Holy cow!
Even if you want to blame the offensive coordinator, Jack has the final say, and that was stupid. A better team or the Broncos on a different day will take that opportunity and score and score and win. Bad coaching discisions are like a virus. You don’t see it until it kills you.

I KNOW!

I was enjoying the game (and breasts) at Hooters and even a hot blonde UCF student/waitress came up and asked me WTF the jags were doing with 3 straight passing plays when it was time to run the ball! I think we all were wondering. Vic said today that he asked JDR about it and JDR said he wanted to stay aggressive bc they were still being aggressive on defense.

Also, I’ve read a few places that our ability to run the ball opened up the passing for the game at Denver. I thought it was the other way around. We came out passing a lot the first drive (Garrard was 7 for 7 on the opening drive I think), which made Denver back off just a little. Then Koetter kept them guessing the rest of the game by passing on first down. Something we haven’t been doing a lot previously. I also think he’s found the types of passing plays that work for our personnel.

Fred is the best

I want the Jags to get him to the pro bowl again before he retires.

by Kenzster on Oct 14, 2008 12:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Jirabofo and kenzster

I loved the passing on 1st down. I always feel that when im Watching Garrard drop back on 1st down, He’s gonna get a big chunk of yards and create something. Koetter’s play calling has been good. Keep doing the 1st down passes. However, on that pass, pass, sack series, if we had done run, run, run, you all know we would be on here bitching about how we ran into the jumbled up line 3 straight times and got 3 yards. I think that our downfall in the past in some games has been not being aggressive w/ the lead, then punt, let our defense fail (in previous years), and we find ourselves in trouble. Thats why I agree with Koetter. gO jAGS! wHAT AM i GONNA DO THIS WEEKEND?

Fred deserves a super bowl ring with this team, then should retire the next year.

Thank you

for saying it for me. I totally agree. As far as im concerned running 3 times just to punt doesn’t do much if you can’t get the first. I think if they would have gotten the first they would have started to run, because they could afford to punt at that point after some yardage and some time off the clock not to mention I think the Broncos would then have to respect the pass. Also if we would have tried to run at that point, did you see how much the Broncos were trying to cause a fumble. I wouldn’t try to run it up the middle with that kind of craziness going on.

by Ewdtrey on Oct 15, 2008 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Coach Koetter called a perfect game in Denver.

I was very happy to see the Jags throwing the ball on first downs instead of doing the predictable run on first down like they have always done since Jack Del Rio took over as coach. I understand the Jags identity is a run the ball offense and stop the run defense but I hate the Jags first play in the game always being a run up the middle. I don’t know about Koetter’s college career but when he came to the Jags he was touted as a big play passing coach wasn’t he? I like the way he mixed it up this game, hopefully it will continue. Go Jags!

He was a pass heavy coach

that liked to go to the TE’s a lot.
