Getting impatient
I don't know about you guys but I am getting very impatient with our rookies. I'm getting sick of this "it takes time to develop" stuff. I know the NFL is a whole new game but their jobs aren't exactly the most comlicated thing in the world. The techniques aren't any different than the high-school level, the guys are just a lot faster and a lot stronger. Here is my simple guide for a pass rush specialist.
1. Line up with your hand BEHIND where the ball is
2. WATCH the ball, do not listen to the quarterback.
3. When the ball moves explode out of your stance and using a combination of rip, spin, bull rush, and counter moves get to the guy with the ball
4. Tackle that guy
Sure they'll throw in a stunt every now and then but those aren't too difficult either. If harvey and groves were DB's or linebackers I would be a little more understanding because those positions actually require learning a lot of different schemes and knowing how/when to adjust to different offensive formations. Even for rookies jumping offsides is inexcusable. These guys both come from the closest thing possible to the NFL, the SEC. They are used to playing in front of crowds nearly twice the size of of JMS. We need a pass rush, do your job. This may seem like harsh words especially for someone who never played on the college level much less the NFL, but when you're getting payed that kind of money and your physical abilities are so great, the expectations are kind of high. Not to mention the fact that Harvey subjected himself to much harsher scrutiny when he decided not to attend camp in order to get more money. I hate to be critical and negative, but It's such a shame that a guy who has yet to prove himself is getting paid more than a star like Maurice Jones Drew. I'm sure it's a lot more comlicated than it looks, but there is no denying that D-end is the most straight forward position on the field.
I suppose it's not fair to go after just Harvey and Groves because the veterans aren't producing either, but that's why we drafted these guys.
What do you guys think? How much time should it take for these guys to be threats like they were in college?

Mario Williams was considered a bust his rookie year as well
It takes time to adjust to the speed and strength.

I'm with you on this...
You can even look at James Harrison, Lamar Woodley, and Lawrence Timmons. These guys took time to develop. There are only so many Kearses’, Merriman’s, and Pepper’s in the world. Not everyone is going to blow your socks off. Btw, am I right in saying that Harvey didn’t start playing football until his jr. year of highschool? If that is the case then think of what he can be when he reaches his full potential.
Yes, it is upsetting! However, we can only hope against hope at this point.
Also In regards to your 2nd point
When you said watch the ball, do not listen to the quarterback. I’m assuming you’re talking about the Quentin Groves offsides penalty, but when they showed the replay Groves was watching the ball. The reason he jumped was because the center looked up at the line. I’m not saying what he did wasn’t stupid and crushing to the team, but it wasn’t a hard count that made him jump. I will add though, that it sure did look like his hand was already lined up in the neutral zone before he even did the jump.
I am over being patient with.....
Adam Podlesh. He wouldn’t be on the roster if we hadn’t actually used a draft choice on him.
I understand what you are saying and maybe the fault is more in the draft system than the players. It’s just so difficult to justufy sacrificing so much money and so many draft picks to make a gamble on a guy that hasn’t proven himself, and I think everyone feels the same way. If Harvey is going to be a starter, I want him to show me something. It doesn’t have to be sacks, (though that would be nice) I just want to see a hungry mentallity beyond his initial step, which is quite good by the way. Though he is getting outplayed physically most fo the time, I do see that kind of effort with Groves.
Also, when I said watch the ball I meant you need to not only ignore the hard count but also other movements. The center will be moving his head and pointing out assignments all the time, there will also be guys in motion before the snap. If you watch the ball, you’ll never get in trouble. He’s a rookie, he’ll make mistakes, but such it shouldn’t happen twice. I’m sure he knows that and won’t let it happen again.
Watching other things than just the ball
is what gives D linemen an edge, but it’s clear he doesn’t have it all down yet which is what comes with being a rookie. Also the rookies didn’t much in this game to either gets stats or to get acclimated. Heck even the other D linemen didn’t play much because we held the ball so long. And the D ends were nearly canceled out in this game because we were run on up the middle. Also there weren’t a whole lot of drop back type of passes to get a good pass rush. Also D ends have to worry about a lot more than what you described. They have to worry about screens and draws and pump fakes and getting their hands up when they can’t get there, they have to worry about other secondary blockers, c gap integrity, run stuffing stunts, hiding what their move will be, dropping back into coverage sometimes, footwork, and the list goes on and on.
Sure, I may have over-simplified things a bit but end is still one of the easiest positions to learn on the defense. Even if you don’t play too much 5 tackles in seven games isn’t enough. At that rate and with a $23.8 million dollar 5 yr contract I think it comes too $396,666 per tackle. (yes that stat is completely irrelevant and yes I am very bored right now). It just shows the absurdity of the draft system. Is it unfair to expect immediate results for that kind of money? Well yes, it is but demand them anyway!
Can’t fault Harvey too much though since the stats are hardly any better for anyone else up front.
I agree ewdtrey. I really didn’t see Harvey in much at all sunday. Groves I saw only on offsides calls.
I have an extreme Love/ hate relationship with this team, as do all of us I’m sure. Garrard’s run was unbelievable. I jumped off my couch and screamed, “That’s my fuc*in boy!”
We gotta rally behind our boys now more than ever. GO JAGS
