State of the Team so far...

Well after 7 games and the Bye week the Jaguars are a meager 3-4, not quite where the team nor us the fans expected to be heading into November. Obviously the next two games against the winless Bungals and Lions are going to determine the fate of the season and very well the future of the franchise. With Indy losing tonight against the Titans the division is all but locked up, however the wild card race is still very interesting. A few wins here and the Jags could find themselves back in the mix, or a few losses could sink the season all together.

First the positives of 2008:

- Matt Jones emergence as the "go to guy" in terms of the receivers.

- David Garrard's late game heroics and never die attitude, not to mention his running capabilites.

- Josh Scobee's clutch leg, tackles, and overall play.

- The glimpses of potential in Mike Walker, Reggie Nelson, and Brian Witherspoon.

- Indianapolis' seeming collapse and 4 losses, also New England's loss of Tom  Brady if there were a potential matchup down the road.

 Now the negatives:

- The inexplicable lack of running game from MJD and Freddy T.

- The rapid decline of the Defense from 2005 to now, including John Henderson, Mike Peterson, and Reggie Hayward.

- The numerous crippling injuries to Meester, Naeole, Manuwai, Williams, Porter, Walker, Nelson, Durant, Wrighster.

- The lack of impact provided by FA's Jerry Porter and Drayton Florence.

- The extremely unfortunate and tragic loss of Richard Collier from the team.

- The lack of effective pass-rush from Harvey, Groves, and Greg Williams defense.

- 4 losses of 7 points or less, all games in which the Jags had a late lead or a chance at winning in the 4th quarter.

- The resurgence of my least favorite team besides Dallas, which is the Titans and the whiny Jeff Fisher. I can't stand that team and every time I hear about them all I can think about is the 1999 season and what should have been for the Jags. I mean if Buffalo doesn't let up that stupid "Music City Miracle" play, the Jaguars go to the Super Bowl and in my opinion would have given the Rams a helluva game.

- The 3-4 record with 9 games to go...

All that aside:

The Jaguars have a couple of games that they should win back to back, and with all the parity in the league nobody has a ridiculously easy schedule. If and this is a huge IF the Jags can win the next couple in any fashion, they can be right back in the playoff picture, because the schedule doesn't get much easier for teams like the Colts, Ravens, Pats, Browns, Jets, and Chargers. I may be over-optimistic at this point but all I'm saying is that if the Jags are 5-4 going home against the Titans and Vikes I think its conceiveable that they can get back in this thing...

I think it will be interesting to see what happens and how the team responds to adversity from here on out, but I have got to believe that with leaders on this team like Taylor and Garrard they can turn this thing around....

Let me know what you guys think, I'm just trying to stay interested in football this year with basketball starting soon and the Jags bumming me out...

Great post.

I think you did a good job of assessing and getting it right. Garrard and Taylor need to step up, hopefully. A win at home, vs titans, would work WONDERS for our boys. Jack, get your shit together baby!!

Poor coaching is holding us down

Despite the talent of our team, our coaching staff and their play calling has left us in a tight spot. Granted, we have a number of vital positions affected by injury, but we are still strong at the skill positions. The coach’s jobs are to adapt and suit the game plan to the strength’s of our players instead of forcing them to play into a system that obviously doesn’t work. Our body is fine, but our brain is, um,… slow.

Great post Jagz

The Jags are a train wreck right now. We never seem able to field the same team week after week because atleast two players are hurt. Then they come back but another guy goes down. Im worried about who is going to replace Matt Jones during the suspension. Porter isnt, R. Williams isnt, Northcutt isnt, I hope that it is Walker. He is the only other WR I have seen do anything promising. The coaches seem to make the biggest boneheaded calls that I have ever seen from a Jag team. Its frustrating to me to watch but I am a fan so I will stand by them, I just dont see a happy ending to this season.

i think the only way this will be a good season is if we score lauranitis in the draft :)

and then depression sets in...

Just terrible. I drove 6 hrs and spent $200 on a hotel to witness that crap they called a game. Cheers to Garrard and Jones. The only 2 guys that realized it was Sunday. What was up with that running right into the scrum of players Taylor and MJD? A guy yelled out right behind me, “don’t go in there!” It was laughable. And Jack that 4th and 1 call? Ya think they were looking for a run right up the gut? Why not have David just sneek it? or better yet maybe the play action pass or a boot-leg? Not the same play they had stopped all game.

And where in the hell is this defense there Mastermind Smith? Burn after Burn. Outcoached by Romeo? that should be the big insult. He is a joke. His own fans don’t even like him.

Man…it is time to crack some skulls. I’m pissed as a fan. Sorry for the language.

If anyone's interested...

I found this site called Gridironmine.com and it has the Jaguars calculated with a 18.1% chance of making the playoffs.

What aboot Hockey, ay?

Don’t forget that the most physical sport on the planet is now up and running. I’m a huge T.B. Lightning fan, and that is an exciting team to watch. I imagine I’ll be paying attention to the Lightning only come January unless this team gets it together.

One thing I’ve seen that’s a little bit troubling to me has been the rampant coach bashing that has gone on since we started so slowly. I can already tell I’m going to have to do a piece on why our coaching staff is top notch again. Check out our “better know” section to see some great bio’s of our coaches. The crew that Jack has put together is top notch, and James “Shack” Harris has got a great eye for talent. Sure, he’s missed on some picks, but the guy’s got a great track-record in the draft and F.A. The coach hating has got to stop people! Donnie Henderson and Gregg Williams are the two main changes we’ve made from a coaching perspective, and Henderson is definitely a step above Dave Campo (our old DB coach).

Yeah, but...

sometimes even great coachs f@#k it up. MJD was commin’ off a game that could have ignited a fire in him. Instead of fueling the fire, JDR and Koeter pissed it out by running 27 more pass plays than run plays.(49 pass plays, 22 run plays) And the only ones Drew got were up the middle on 3rd and short. Does Jack have Alzhimers or did he send a double to take his place in Denver? How do you say, “WOW, What a success,….. let’s try a game with mostly passing, now.”? Oh and, he did the same thing after the Indi game, where Fred and MoJo both kicked ass. Both ‘following games’ were against teams whose run defenses are in the bottom half of the league. It’s bad coaching, no matter how good the coaching staff is. Sometimes great players play poorly and sometimes great coaches coach poorly.

I really think injuries are your biggest problem

…not coaching… but that’s an outsider perspective, of course.

Believe me, as a Texans fan – I can sympathize with the havoc injuries can wreak on a team. I see nothing wrong with MJD and FT this year, it just seems like all the O-line injuries are killing your run game.

Of course, the Jags D hasn’t been as fearsome as it has been in prior years… and I think the Harvey holdout was a pretty big blow – especially since you guys cut some pass rushers in the off-season (if I remember right) because you were counting on the new guys working out.

Anyway – here’s the good news – you’ve got Cincy and Detroit to play still… and I don’t think it matters in the slightest that those games are on the road.

We Texans fans were very afraid of the Cincy game because of their great receivers and our CRAP secondary – turns out, all you have to do is jump on them early, and they’ll quit. You guys saw that ridiculous Kevin Walter TD where the Bengal defender pretty much just quit on the play.

Detroit is Detroit. You guys will crush them, as we did for a half.

Anyway – we’re rivals and I root against you guys obviously, but you’re a bunch of passionate, knowledgeable fans… so I like coming over here once in a while… plus, I’m a huge, huge fan of Jack Del Rio.

See y’all on December 1st.

I think Houston is on a the verge as well

One loss to the Colts, one to the Jaguars, both very winnable. That would make you 5-2. Don’t quit, we both need to knock Tennessee into humbleville soon.

Yeah,...

not everyone here cheers against you. Personally, the only time I cheer against you is if it will hurt the Jags for you to win.

WHats the latest with M. Jones for this weekend? will he be suspended?

by Joeyy89 on Oct 29, 2008 4:54 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Pretty much dead on

These are pretty glaring dificiencies on this team and you’ve listed them out pretty well. You can add Williamson to your list of off season aquisitions that have not panned out so far as well.

Lack of runnig game is impacted by a couple of things. 1) Teams are now loading the box to take away the run 2) injuries and reshuffling of O Line and 3) lack of explosive / impact WR (no one strikes fear into opposing D’s) Matt Jones – what a turn around from last year. I think he’s the most improved player in the entire league, but unfortunately, he’s not a deep threat.

SO FAR (key phase here) our off season has been a bust and is this years biggest downfall. Whether it’s draft picks (Groves / Harvey) that have not produced yet, or trade and FA aquisitions (WR) that can’t get on the field (for whatever the reason: injury, bad play, etc), that has caused this team to take a step back from last year’s team.

Maybe a year from now these guys become ALL Galaxy, but for the here and now, it hasn’t worked out SO FAR.

I would add one more thing. Last year’s team had the “IT” factor and you could see “IT”. They were special and they were clicking – hence the high expectations coming into this year. This year’s team seems to be lacking “IT”. Mercedes Lewis even commented on this in a recent interview. I know it’s a totally subjective thing, but I beleive it is important.

by OGN on Oct 29, 2008 8:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No your right

They dont have “IT”. They have no identity, it used to be that they were a tough hard as nails defensive team that ran the ball down your throat. I guess those days are behind us. OGN you forgot to mention the other expensive bust we signed this year. Florence is going to give the CB job back to Williams and Sensabauagh will be the SS soon. On the flip side, if the line can somehow gell in the next few weeks that will help the run game out immensely or atleast some. With the run game going hopefully that will keep the offense on the field longer and we wont have to worry about the defense blowing leads for us. Its not over yet. JDR is a good coach. Now we get to see how good.
