A trip back in time... a reason to smile
I remember writing a program on my Commodre 64 computer that could predict football scores. It was a decent program, but more than that, it showed me something about football I didn't know. The 1983 Chicago Bears, it told me, were much better than the 8-8 season they were posting and might be on the verge of greatness. The 1983 Bears were always in close games. They lost 5 games by 7 points or less, and 4 of them by 3 points or less. They won 5 games by 7 points or less, 3 of them by 3 points or less. The Bears were fighting hard every game, but hadn't found a way to win, not yet. Of course in 1984 they went 11-5 and in 1985 they posted an almost perfect season of 15-1. Dan Marino beat them on Monday night football. The 1985 Chicago Bears are considered one of the great teams ever.
What I learned was that first a championship team learns how to put up a good fight before they learn how to win. Consider the 2002 Indianapolis Colts. They started the year 4-4, finished 10-6 with 6 wins by 7 points or less, 3 of them by 3 points or less. They were fighting but barely winning and got blown out badly in the playoffs. 2003, 11-5, 2004, 12-4, 2005, 14-2, 2006 Super Bowl. Oh yea, the team that knocked them out in 2004 and 2005, the New England Patriots. In 2002, they learned not to quit. That was the gift Tony Dungy brought them. That attitude delivered the victories soon after.
So how about the New England Patriots in the Bill Bellichek era? The 2000 NE Patriots, coach Bellichek's first year, they went 5-11. Two of the wins by 3 points or less, one by 7 or less. They could have been 2-14 easily. Seven of the losses were by 7 points or less and 3 of those by 3 or less. They could have been 12-4. Of course, after that year (excluding the strike year) 12-4 would be a bad year year for them. In 2001 they were 11-5 and in the following years came 4 Super Bowl showings. They went through the same learning process of don't quit.
How about the greatest run of playoff appearances ever, the SF 49ers. Starting in 1981, they showed up in the playoffs 16 out of 18 years. How about the start of it all, Bill Walsh and the 1980 SF 49ers? That year they were 6-10, six losses by 7 points or less, 2 of them 3 points or less. Three of the six victories were by 3 points or less. They could have been 3-13 or 12-4. They were learning how to fight, but hadn't learned how to win, not yet. That season was the start of one of the greatest teams of all time.
So how about the 2008 Jacksonville Jaguars? Four close losses, three close wins. In there fighting every game? Yes sir! So let's change out all the players and all the coaches and throw away our season tickets and have a good old fashion hissey-fit. Let's set an example of how to quit. Or maybe, let's sit back and watch Jack Del Rio build a dynasty. Let's let this team learn how not to quit and let's stand right there with them. History shows the champions all learned how not to quit before they learned how to win.
This is a special year for us, let's enjoy it. Oh yea, and try to smile, everything is ok.

Excellent.
As usual Tkopa, a job well done.
If it’s a dynasty in the works, then patient I shall be.
Go Jags!
Unfortunately, the truth only comes out game-by-game.

Great Info. !!!!
I’m with you on this. With the injuries that we have suffered on the OL, our guys have continued to fight. We have been able to get guys who are not yet starters time in games that will translate to valuable experience in the future.
Our guys are learning to fight thru all the adversity, and I expect it to pay big dividends in the future. As previously stated above.
GO JAGS!!

Nice
Thank you :) It’s what I’ve been saying. This team does not suck, it’s on the verge of putting it all together.

Staying positive...
is a formula for success! Great post, one of the best I’ve read lately. Made me have a diffrent perspective that the one I had created after watching the Browns game. I know that many may think that winning a big game, like the Denver game, could have been a turning point in the season. But maybe it’s a loss at home, like this past weekend against Cleveland. Maybe it will wake this team up and they will start putting things together, especially on defense where it is needed the most. Harvey and Groves must be ready by now, I think they have the knowledge of what they are supposed to do, now they just need that fire! Maybe the vets can provide a little motivation. The Jags are a great road team so far, let’s take it on the road and come home on a positive note and move forward. We as fans can just sit back, relax, and enjoy watching Jaguar football like I know we love to do.

Great post Tkopa...
I enjoyed that alot. But, remembering that I use to be a Cowboy fan for 29 years, I would have to say that the best playoff run ever would be 18 out of 20 years. From ’66 to ’85 the Dallas Cowboys were in the postseason. Both teams have worn the moniker of dynasty at one point or another or another. ha, ha. Keep up the good work.

OK, Just for you as an apology
- Insert new paragraph in post ******
However, the greatest example of patience and instilling a winners culture belongs to the Dallas Cowboys. The 1960 Dallas Cowboys under coach Landry lost every single game they played that season. They barely could win a game for the next four years until 1965 when they went 7-7. They opened that 1965 season with a 31-2 victory over the Giants and a 27-7 win over the Redskins. The years of frustration came out in those two games and when they had those victories to cherish , they promptly lost the next 5 games in a row. They may have won but they were not winners yet. Feeling it and then losing it so soon burned an identity into that team. For the next 20 years, the Dallas Cowboys were in the playoffs 18 times winning 2 Super Bowls. The Cowboys consider themselves winners every season now and with 5 Super Bowl titles, they and their fans have earned that right.
Champions pay the price first. Our Jaguars are paying the Champions price right now.

Reality Check
I wish it was that easy, but we have a lot of question marks on this team. Will the O-line be better next year (all the guys on IR have to come back healthy), and what will we do about Meester (always injured) and Barnes (last year)? Will the WRs be better, and can Matt Jones do it again next year (remember Reggie Williams last year)? How will we fix the Defense? Every RB is running on us, and we have to fix the secondary (Florence is gargabe).

Who said it was easy ?
Nobody is saying it’s easy, but it’s possible. Way to try and ruin a nice positive thread…

You make it sound like February
This season isn’t over, actually it’s not even halfway over. Let’s stop talking about how players are going to play next year and who we plan on getting rid of.

Here's one for you
It is not easy, and no one said it would be. I don’t think that there are a lot of question marks either. The OL has been obliterated, and we are sitting at 3-4. Not many teams can have guys step in, and continue the fight like ours have. We have been so close, but have been in every game. We have not been blown out, and that is because our O has been carrying us. Even with a makeshift OL. What that means is the young guys that they drafted and have developed have more than held their own, and the veteran back ups have done the same. Not to mention the loss of RC.
The DL is what our achiles heel is at this point. With no rush the DB’s are helpless. Get a rush and the D becomes dominant. Look at how many 3rd down conversions we have gave up. I think we are 30th in the league on 3rd down defense. With only 9 sacks..count’em 9 in our first 7 games. We are in favorable situations on 3rd down, but not able to get off the field. That is what the problem is.

Flippin' Sweet!
Very nicely researched and well written. Thanks for the positive attitude and the ability to spread it out to many others. Kudos!
