A Few Questions With...TheSportsGuru, Broncos Blogger
Hello Jags fans, Guru here from Mile High Report welcoming you to Broncos/Jaguars week. As part of the cross-blogging that will be going on all week between MHR and BCC, we figured we would create these FanPosts on each others sites to answer any questions that were out there about each team.
Got a Broncos question? Fire away! I am looking forward to a great game Sunday. Broncos fans still have a rather bitter taste in our mouth about last year's game, so this weekend should be fun! So good luck, and ask me any questions about the Broncos, the game, etc!
I'll check back in regularly to get those questions answered!

Will Royal be ready to roll Sunday?
by harveyismyboy on Oct 7, 2008 4:03 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Answer
He said after the game on Sunday that “he hoped to play” on Sunday, but if I were a betting man, which I am, I would say he won’t dress. Darrell Jackson is healthy, and affords the Broncos the luxury of resting Royal for the Patriots next Monday Night. You’ll likely hear all week how Royal is Questionable, but when Sunday rolls around look for Royal to be Inactive.

On the other hand,
Shanny is famous for keeping a player status as questionable when he knows they are going to play (as do most NFL coaches). I’d say Royal playing is really 50/50 at this point.

But, a little bit of support never hurts!

I think you’re saying he probably won’t play (“look for Royal to be Inactive”) while I’m saying don’t be surprised if he does.

Defense
I hear your offense is clicking quite well, but I also heard your D was suspect after giving up 60-some-odd points in 2 weeks. Then your boys smacked around Tampa and only let them have 13. So is your D porous, like ours has been, and Tampa just has that bad of a QB problem? Or are they just coming into their own?

I think our D is coming into their own

Answer
The defensive numbers have been a bit misleading. In the two games the Broncos offense has not turned the ball over – Oakland(WK1) and Tampa(WK4), the defense has allowed a total of 27 points. When the offense has turned the ball over, the defense has struggled, at least in the points allowed department. The big difference between this defense and the one the Jags saw a year ago is toughness, at least in my opinion. These guy will lay the lumber. The linebackers are fast and aggressive, and Elvis Dumervil has a motor that doesn’t quit.
If the offense can do their part, and that doesn’t necessarily mean scoring points, this defense can hold its own.

Troubles
We’re all looking for a light at the end of our misery tunnel around here. So, which will the Broncos have more trouble with in your opinion, the run, or our evolving passing game?
And just what the heck is going on up there with your offense? I have to admit to not seeing you guys play this year. So have you become a prolific passing team, or a good combo of run and pass?
And last, Maurice Jones-Drew… Great running back, or GREATEST running back? hehe

its starting to balance out more it seems
about what the broncos are going to have more trouble stopping depends on the teams gameplans and if the broncos line can pressure the qb

Answer
That is an interesting question since I don’t think the Jags can run the ball like they want to because of all the injuries to your O-Line. That said, the Broncos are selling out to stop the run, often going with a 4-linebacker set. They have also been playing alot of Cover-2 attempting to keep everything in front of them. It seems the motto now is to force teams to have to go the long way to score points, meaning lots of plays. That’s when the turnovers come in. If the offense forces the Broncos defense on the field alot, they will wear down.
As for our offense, right now it is pass heavy. The Broncos just don;t have a guy they can give the ball to 20 times to be affective. they really don’t have 2, so they are going with 3 – Selvin Young, Andre Hall and Michale Pittman. They also know their best player is Jay Cutler, along with Brandon Marshall, so getting the ball in the hands is crucial. I think it will even itself out now that teams are more leery of the Broncos passing game, but time will tell if the Broncos can actually do both.

O-line
Our O-line has rededicated itself to stopping the run. After the Colts they game, they said no more! I believe the quote was, ‘We will not allow another rusher over 50 yards!’ And they haven’t in the past two. You are going to have to deal with quite a bit of resolve there. Our O-line will not be run on, and that’s that!
(premise form the Onion a week or two ago, I thought it fitting)

Not a question for Guru but a comment on JAX and DEN...
I’ve always found this matchup to be intriguing because in some ways JAX and DEN are similar teams. Not necessarily in playing style, as I’ve always thought of DEN as a finese team and JAX as a power team, but in terms of small-market, often overlooked, but good year in and year out anyway type of team. I think we both have coaches that are pretty much tenured for as long as they want to be. And, except for the last two years for DEN, both teams seem to pop up regularly in the postseason and everyone says “where the hell did they come from”. I expect a great game on Sunday (just scored some tickets) and may the best team win!

Football University?
Anyone got a link, sound slike something I could benefit from. I tried googling it, but no real way of knowing which particular site is the “correct” one

Sorry, that was dumb of me
To forget a link.
Football University
It’s got a Bronco’s tilt, but the fundamentals are fantastic! He’ll also answer just about any question you can throw at him.

OK, great site!
Wow, there are some awesome articles on that site! I guess for most of you guys who “grew up” with football it might all just be obvious stuff, but I’ve learned a LOT from reading some of those articles (12 months ago I didn’t know the difference between a QB and a punter!).

HT really knows his stuff.
I have learned quite a bit from reading his MHR University posts.

Pretty good analysis
"where the hell did they come from".
I think this about sums it up for both of our teams. And if you ask me I like it that way.
Here is to a good game guys.
Enjoy the game UM

Cutler
is turning out to be awesome. I am willing to bet that there are a lot of happy Bronc fans out there who are applauding the arrival of another great QB in the orange and blue. I think that your future is bright as long as he keeps this level of play going. Great players are drawn to guys like Jay.
by JagSoldier on Oct 9, 2008 10:07 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
You are right...
in so many ways. Cutler has been everything the fans have expected, and then some. He’s one of those guys that is very intense about the game and has a drive to get better. Sunday will only be his 25th start, so the future is definitely bright….

You Betcha!!!
We’re pretty stoked on Cutler (pun only partially intended). However, he has had a couple of off games. I think that most of the MHR faithfull would say he’s had three straight sub-par games in a row. Nobody is really sure what’s going on with him (we’re all very, VERY hesitant to use the “D” word).
GO BRONCOS!!!

So I ask again
MJD, great RB? Or greatest RB? hehe
Great game if you guys are still watching this thread.

Thanks all!!!
Obviously Broncos fans are dissapointed with the outcome (and a fairly pissed that our team didn’t seem to want to play football on Sunday)…but enjoyed talking with you guys before the game. Hopefully we’ll have another opportunity in January. Good luck!
(and no…MJD is not the greatest RB. He’s pretty good though!)
