The Problem with this team in my opinion.

Everyone seems to be pointing fingers these days when it come to the Jaguars.  Weather it's the O-Line, Greg Williams, JDR, Rookie Defensive ends, Kharma, etc.  I have watched this team vehemently since the arrival of fred taylor.  I live and die every sunday and sometimes monday and from my observations there has been one problem with this team ever since tom coughlin was fired.

Lets take a look a the draft classes since Premier Coughlin left the team.

2003

Byron Leftwich-QB(no longer with team)

Rashean Mathis-S(moved to CB and went to pro bowl, cornerstone of D)

Vince Manuwai-G(best OL on team, out for season)

George Wrighster-TE(with team, on PUP list)

2004

Reggie Williams-WR(current starter on team, not worth 9th overall pick)

Daryll Smith-LB(current starter and one of the best players noone knows about)

Jorge Cordova-LB(walking injury, not worth the pick

Anthony Maddox-No Description necessary

Ernest Wilford-WR(started for team and best on team for 4 seasons*excluding jimmy smith*no sees no playingtime in miami

Josh Scobee-K

2005

Matt Jones-WR(developing into a good posession reciever in 4th season with team)

Khalif Barnes-T(Best OL on the patchwork unit of this years team, in final year of contract)

Scott Starks-CB(worked way into nickel role only to go on IR)

Gerald Sensabaugh-DB(5th rd pick, currently starting SS)

2006

Marcedes Lewis TE(starting TE, 2td catches this year)

Maurice Jones-Drew-RB(Should be starting soon, best pick of the current administration)

Clint Ingram-OLB(Could start for 90% of teams in nfl)

2007

Reggie Nelson-FS(on the verge of being something special)

Justin Durant-LB(Starting at MLB next year)

Mike Walker-WR(has shown flashes, but also bum knees, can he bounce back?)

Brian Smith-DE(never saw the field, injury problems)

Derek Landri-DT( great change of pace last year)

2008

Derek Harvey-DE(Interception first game, no sacks since, still early)

Quentin Groves-DE(still too early to tell)

My point is that its obvious what the problem is to me.  I have told my friends this time and time again and that is that we need to get rid of Shack Harris.  It is very obvious that he and Del Rio are not on the same page as far as what type of players are to play for this team.  One year has an offensive lineman been drafted in the first three round since 2003.  Year after year we have let good free agents sign elsewhere while pedestrian players such as Drayton Florence, Tony Pashos, Jerry Porter and Reggie Hayward get rich.  I am not knocking any of these guys, but look at the Titans, they have signed quality offensive linemen and defensive guys from within the division.  This is what we should have been doing all along.  Gene Smith is the guy I think should be the next GM of our team.  Let me know what you guys think.

Sign Hall

I think after the Raiders release DeAngelo Hall, which they are about to do, we should sign him even though he’d cost us a ton, I think he would be a great addition to the team.

DeAngelo Hall?????

He is the biggest laugh in Atlanta! Especially after the win in Oakland.

No, Shack Harris has some sort of eye for talent. I think the quick fix approach this last off season was the problem. The draft became too focused on ‘positional players’ and not talent/character. This was the problem the year before. I am a huge Justin Durant fan, but Reggie Nelson over Brady Quinn? This will be talked about in years to come. Hind sight is every thing, but betting the season on two rookies this year was a big mistake!

Hey, I drank the cool aide too.

Reggie Nelson over Brady Quinn......

All the way man!!!!

Who is Brady Quinn???? I mean, you have David, and he should be much better than Quinn……

yeah dude

that turned out to be one of the best decisions yet…garrard is on the verge of being a pro bowl type quarterback…and reggie nelson is developing into a very good player as well…without that pick we would turn into cleveland – turning on garrard too quickly and pushing to pur brady quinn in…and have ZERO at safety

Not turning on Garrard...

How could I turn my back on the only guy on the team that is giving his all. But Garrard is what close to 30. I can’t argue with you guys who can’t see past 2 years, but if you think a Safety is harder to get than a QB, than I think you just don’t get the game. Look at teams that are on their 2nd and 3rd QB’s drafted in round 1 that haven’t found a star yet. They keep returning to recycled QB’s. By the way, Cleveland has a better chance to make it to the play-offs than the Jags do and are far ahead of us going into next year. I’m the Homer…. take off the blinders guys.

I agree

Trent Edwards was there for the taking as well. David is fine, but who behind him? We need to draft linemen in quantity. Protect the QB, open holes for the running backs.

Shack Harris is The Man... From the list you made, I'd say he's been more successful than most GM's.

However, You’re right about Gene Smith. He was a huge reason our scouting department was one of the best in the NFL. I wouldn’t be to upset if Gene took Shack’s place, however, I think Shack has been more than successful at GM and would have no problem with his continued guidance of the team.

also....

when we took henderson instead of haynesworth??? henderson has turned into a very good player but haynesworth is a legit mvp candidate at DT

by jlana24 on Nov 5, 2008 1:09 PM EST reply actions

Henderson has been underperforming the year

But comparing both, Haynesworth has been considered more of a dissappointment every year while Henderson has been a real force. Even if Haynesworth turns in an outstanding year this year, Big John will have given more quality years than Haynesworth gave Tennessee.
