Defensive Woes
With disregard to some rescent misguided requests for my immediate dismissal from this forum I dare take another opportunity to voice my opinion. (I have by the way been a JAG fan since their inception)
I don't know if its gameplanning or just QB's taking what our secondary gives them but we allow the most plays over 40 yards as well as 20 yarders during 2008. Without actually looking at the stats any fair weather fan should already know this. Plays under 10 yards in my opinion fall on the corners for the most part. But what sticks out to me is the contrast in Sammy Knight and Reggie "Oh thats my man" Nelson. Last year you grew to expect Sammy to be a liability however he almost always had a brilliant play during the course of the game. This year we woefully wait for the Eraser to erase. To put it in Madden terms we lack "AWR" at the safety position. Sensy has played ok being his first season as a starter but Reggie's bar was set on draft day and he has to prove himself
How say you all......

Sammy
Couldn’t cover a tight end to save his life. At least Reggie is getting torched by receivers, for whatever it’s worth.
It’s still a young man’s game. Reggie just needs to pick it up. He’ll be fine.

I’m sorry aboutthat. You are very very welcome here and the discussion you are starting is great.

Well truth be told
The players you mentioned play 2 different positions, so it’s hard to compare directly. There was however a fall off this year at the safety position. Sensy is a future star I believe and if Nelson can get the mental side of the game he can become an even bigger star. What we are seeing now is the growing pains of a young position. I think we had a great tandem last year with a young atheletic player in the more athletic FS position and a savvy veteran in the less atheltic SS position. Now we have 2 young guys back there and it shows. Even when Brian Williams was back there, Williams was asking Nelson questions about the position.
I think we as fans/viewers are too used to seeing players coming in out of college and becoming stars over night. The guys that aren’t stars overnight aren’t on TV and we don’t notice them. But don’t be deceived. Most Players go through growing pains. Remember Nelson is playing in a position that is easily exposed when there is a weakness; but note that other young players are continously making mistakes, they just aren’t as exposed to the untrained eye. I mean how often do you notice a G make a mistake?
This isn’t an excuse. It’s a reminder.
i only watched the Jags once this year-last weeks colts game. what stood out to me the most was the overagressive play of the DB’s and Safety. they seemed to pile on after the whistle, late hit (uncalled) and lack overall discipline. i may be way off base (sorry if i am) but is this remotely true? if it is, i’m looking for some personal fouls calls and blown coverages sunday in b-more.
i am not looking forward to MJD getting screens out of the backfield. I don’t think he will have success up the gut because our LB’s/DB’s are real fast to the line. If he gets by Ngata in the middle. What’s Gerrards biggest strength? Who’s his number 1 receiver?
Um...
I think what you noticed was probably evident in the game, but I don’t think it’s a discipline issue. I think it’s just a display of frustration after a year of frustration. I guess when I look at what i just said, that kind of is what a lack of discipline is.
Yeah Nelson was the culprit in that game
He tries to hit people hard but he usually doesn’t try to hit people late. I think it had something to do with the fact that he was getting embaressed out there and he felt like he needed to make something happen or at least be productive.
I may be wrong but I will say it again, Reggie is like a fish.
He bites on the QBs eyes like its a bright shiny object and comes off his man because he thinks and interception is coming his way. If he would play his man, the interceptions will come his way. We all see what happens when he leaves his man with a five to ten yard window while he is waiting for the QB to throw him the ball.
