The best GM / Coach combination for the Jaguars?

Wayne Weaver has given you an assignment.  He wants to know who you think is the best GM / Coach combination in the NFL.  Then he wants you to pick the best GM / Coach combination for our team.

In the comments, can you provide ideas on what a great GM / Coach combination for the Jaguars would be?  Do you want the Big Tuna here?  Should Marty take over as GM and keep JDR?  How about Gene Smith and Mike Smith?  Can't happen but would it be the best?  I really don't know, so I thought I would ask.  I know a guy who would like to know, WW.  Blast away and let's complete this assignment.

When I looked to vote

I wanted to vote for longevity. The two teams that jump to mind over the last decade or so are the Colts and the Patriots. The Patriots don’t have a GM so they’re obviously not an option for best combination, but I wouldn’t mind seeing the Jaguars try this model with Jack Del Rio acting as head coach and GM.

I ended up voting for the Colts as much as it pains me to do so.

You gotta credit the Panthers and Steelers too!

They have been steady and consistent.

What about the bucs?!?

They got a super bowl and have consistently done it big time on defense. I don’t even have to look to know they are in the top 5 in total defense. They are always in the playoff hunt (except for one or 2 years) and won a super bowl

I have a hard time voting for the Colts tandem

I think Dungy is a great coach, but I’d like to see how this team would do without Peyton. I may not have all my facts straight, but I think 90% of the teams in the NFL would have picked Peyton with the first overall pick if they had the choice to. (I know about the Leaf thing.)
I wanna know about the tough choices. I wanna know what this team will be like if Peyton was unavailable.
I think we all agree that the Colts would be nothing without Peyton. Doesn’t that say something to you?And the fact that they Can’t replace Manning says something to me. Granted Manning hasn’t missed a start, but they have no one waiting in the wings.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 22, 2008 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

Except for the 2006 postseason where they suddenly got good,

The Colts have been continuously underwhelming on defense. Their defensive line is severely undersized; it’s been easy to run on them for years, and they still haven’t done much of anything to address that. Not such great GMing there.

by MoveThoseChains on Dec 22, 2008 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

What about the receivers?

The Colts have always had great receivers and good tight ends. I think you could plug almost any QB in with those receivers and he would produce excellent numbers. Give Garrard receivers like the Colts and I think the results would be impressive. The Colts defense always seems to be either boom or bust.

by Kingfysh on Dec 22, 2008 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

That was something that I did like, however...

Even though we have sucked at picking WR’s in the first round ,I usually expect a first round WR to be pretty good. And couple that with Manning, and you will usually find success if I had to guess.
Personnally I would like to see some more lower draft picks for a position that should be a dime a dozen.
Marvin Harrison, Dallas Clark, Reggie Wayne, Anthony Gonzalez all were 1st rounders. That’s a lot to invest in vertually one position. (I realize Clark is TE, but he’s mostly a receiver. I have seen him block somewhat well though, for a smallish TE.)

by Ewdtrey on Dec 22, 2008 7:18 PM EST up reply actions

If Manning was our QB

I would like to see Receivers in the first round.

Do you think this was the model for Shack when he picked Byron?

Jack as a GM?

Ohh… I don’t know about that. I like Jack as the gambler on the sideline, but GM is a business/legal position, CEO so to speak.

Let Jack coach and bring somebody in.

Dreaming...

My “Dream Team” would be Madden as GM and Pete Carroll as head coach… just my opinion.

In reality, I still like JDR as coach… On GM, I may go with Jeff Ireland.

Looks like picking a GM for JDR will be an actual task

My head coach ideas for you guys

Spagnuolo would be a great hire. I see Harvey and Groves being phenomenal pass rushers, and who else would be a better hire than someone who has made Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka Pro Bowl-worthy pass rushers?

Of course, I would love to see you guys get Cam Cameron so there are two less games for us to worry about.

Cam Cam has been

pretty damn good as an OC this year. I wanna see what he does next year. He will live and die with his ability to make Flacco progress next year.

Jaff Lageman for GM

J/K
Though I like his ability to scout/judge players. I usually agree with what he says about personnel. I don’t know what that means exactly, but I like to think I could be a good scout, in time, considering my recent success in predictions.
Truth be told, I’d be too scared to pick another Matt Millen.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 22, 2008 6:13 PM EST reply actions

Coughlin and Reese would be good

I think history shows that Jacksonville ran out Coughlin “The GM who ran the Jaguars into Salary Cap Hell” out of town rather than the coach who went to the playoffs 4 years in a row and got us to 2 AFC Championship games.

I know he's a rookie coach

so you can’t consider the Ravens John Harbaugh. However, Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome has proven to be the best draft and personnel guy in the business in our fans’ humble opinions. You’ll get a good idea when you see some of these lesser known and even some undrafted guys this Sunday, when we clinch the final Wild Card slot!

by Rexx on Dec 23, 2008 11:57 AM EST reply actions

He's good at getting

defensive players. But I still don’t like any of the QB’s he’s picked (At least not a lot). And he’s having trouble finding some newer receivers from the looks of it. I also don’t really like his RB stable a lot. So I guess that kinda means all the offensive skill men. lol
Obviously JO, Lewis, Reed were all great picks. O yeah, and I really like the big boy from Oregon, Haloti Ngata.
He’s just really good at finding football players.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 23, 2008 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

Flacco was a great pick

and we do have a few running backs that most teams would love to have (McGahee, McClain), although you guys are pretty set at RB, even though Taylor is getting old and might not be the same guy when/if he returns. Also Derrick Mason is as good a possession receiver there is in the league, and the Jags have not been too good at picking receivers either.

Our o-line is the youngest in the league and deserve some serious props, as the oldest guy is 25!

I think Ozzie’s done pretty good on both sides of the ball. We’ll keep him in Baltimore.

Ozzie has done a great job

Especially with throwing away the point system and giving the Jaguars the pick they wanted and still getting a lot of value in the draft.

you should check our draft record..we go after the best available player and rarely trade up. our picks within the top 20 are amazing with most paying huge dividends and making the pro-bowl. i like comparing with the Jags because we both cut our teeth about the same time. it just so happens that D remains our indentity and we stick with the formula during the draft. i have to admit that i think Billick had a lot to do with “Ozzies” QB picks. McNaire did well and just missed in some big games, Boller was forced on us for too many years, Grbac got us to the playoffs but had no heart for the game anymore, Dilfer was a student of the game and the rest were #3 guys at best.

You are right about our huge yearly failure to land a 2nd receiver. Mason is just absolutely amazing and is approaching Hall of Fame status. Mark Clayton is coming along, Heap keeps on going…..(the years of Michael Jackson and Derrick Alexander seem so long ago-epic Jacksonville/Raven games then with your little kicker always pulling you through). We did waste many years with a below average WR crew..I still scratch my head wondering why we never beefed up the WR’s..I think it had a lot to do with Billicks arrogance that he could make gold from hay.

BUT, we have done well over the years with our RB’s Jamal Lewis, Chester Taylor, Priest Holmes, Mcgahee, Ray Rice, McClaine…we even had Bam Morris, Byner and a guy named Roosevelt in the begining lol…Lewis, Chester, Priest and Rice were uncovered by Ozzie’s staff. Thats a heck of a backfield. We now have Ray Rice, Ron McClaine and McGAhee and I’ll take this total backfield over most in the league. Ray Rice and McClaine will be very successful for many years together. They compliment each other very well. We just need 1 more proven receiver to seal the deal.

by raven on Dec 24, 2008 1:12 AM EST reply actions

That all sounds about right

I actually liked the Mcgahee deal when it was made, but now I think it’s obvious he’s only the third best in your back field. He’s a good talent, but he just seems like he just doesn’t have “it”.
Looks to me you guys have a harder time keeping your RB’s than getting them. That’s truely the best compliment your scouting staff can get.
I wish you guys could have kept Drew Olson (QB). I was pulling for the guy. (I’m a UCLA grad if hadn’t guessed already)
I’ll wait to really judge Flacco, but to me he doesn’t seem so different from Boller except you guys are getting more wins. lol
We’ll see, I guess, how he prgresses. I think Cam Cameron is doing a great job with that offense.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 24, 2008 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

Nothing in common

between Flacco and Boller. Obviously, you haven’t been watching the Ravens this season and specifically Flacco. He is more poised and calm in the pocket as a rookie than Boller was as a 5th year player. His arm is a cannonlike Boller’s with better accuracy. Related to his poise is his ability to find the second or even third read, which Boller never could do. I liked Drew Olson as well and thought he would get a chance in Carolina after the Panthers picked him up last year. Mc Gahee is still a star but has been injured much of this year, which is why he is ot higher on the depth chart, but you will see a lot more of him now and in the post season, WHEN we win and get in tomorrow.

Drew Olson is still in the league?

I used to watch him all the time at the Rose Bowl and I thought he had no shot at the NFL. I’m really surprised to hear that he’s actually still playing.

Ted Cottrell Anyone???

See, I voted for Miami’s tandem because that coaching staff has done everything they can to turn that “what used to be butt ugly” Dolphins team to a team that can and has impressed many of their critics. They also did very good at the draft last year, just showing that they do have a strategy, something that this Jacksonville team needs now!

Ted Cottrell may be a good choice for a coach in replacement for Del Rio as well. He’s been bounced from team to team quite a bit but I think he good do some good here in Jacksonville and his experience as a long time coach /// player wouldn’t hurt, just my opinion!

How long have you been a Jags fan and do you have an opinion on the james Harris departure?

He's the guy that just got fired

He was the DC of the Chargers earlier this year before he was fired. I don’t know if he’s the answer. The Texans and Colts are pass heavy and he’s had problems defending the pass with many different defenses that he’s coached.
The Chargers saw a significant improvement after he was fired.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 24, 2008 8:19 PM EST up reply actions

Plus if he's from SD

Then he’s probably a 3-4 guy and wouldn’t be hired here anyway.
