Free Agent Fishing: Vernon Carey
Vernon is a 5th year OT who plays for the Miami Dolphins. He is currently playing RT, although he had a successful stint at LT in 2007 allowing only 3 sacks on the year. He was moved to RT this season to make room for the first overall pick, Jake Long to play LT.
This season he has only allowed 3.5 sacks and has been a big part of the Dolphins rushing attack thus far. However, Carey could be playing his last game as a dolphin tomorrow if the team loses to the Jets and misses the playoffs. Although the team has expressed interest in resigning him, it is unlikely that they will give him the 25-30 million he wants. The Jags could sign Carey to a lucrative deal and have their long-term LT. He would still come cheaper than many career LT's, and his success at the position in 2007 makes him less of a gamble.
His character is impeccable, he has been involved in off the field charity activities since he began his career. He was the Home Depot NFL Neighborhood MVP as well as being the Dolphins nominee for the NFL's Man of the Year award. He is a class act all around and I've posted a list of his various charitable endeavors below.

With the way the Jags have been in free agency lately
I think a reserved approach will be the SOP for this offseason. Depending on who we cut this offseason and potential dead space in the cap, a 25-30 million LT might not be our best idea. I still say Eugene Monroe is the Jags go to guy if he’s available.

A top 10 offensive tackle draft pick
would probably cost a ton anyway.

Yeah, but how many busts occur at that position vs any other in the first round?
Not to mention I don’t think Carey is a long term solution. Now, if we could get him reasonably and fall in love with Malcolm Jenkins, I’d consider it.

Played Well
I went back and watched all the highlights from the Dolphins games on NFL.com and I only caught 1 play where he got burned. Again those were the High-Lights but he looked good.

Early Predictions...
Have the Jags snaggin Malcom Jenkins OSU cornerback. God knows we need a good one. I feel this position on defense was a ‘major’ if not the biggest glaring need on ‘D’.
or
do we go for the big ‘O’ lineman? Big guys are hard to come by. Eugene Monroe VaTech OT? Come on down!

OSU
Do I have to take off my bias toward OSU football to consider Jenkins?

It's hard to do...
I’d really rather not have anyone from that school…
But in any case, I think you have to get the big guys first.

EUGENE MONROE
“JAG HOMER” Eugene is from Virginia, not VT. I think this has to be your guy if he’s available at our pick (with Michael Oher already gone!). He has not allowed a sack in 25 games and has had 20 knockdowns this year. At 6’6 315 lbs he could be our franchise LT. Some scouts even said he looks like a young Orlando Pace. If you ever get a chance watch his youtube video against USC. I would be very interested to see how many times he can bench 225!

Va... I stand corrected.
ahhhh Orlando Pace…. ahhh beeer.
In any case, I feel that those 2 positions OT and CB have the least risk associated. I have no stats to back this up of course, but ‘O’ linemen just seem to be less of a bust as opposed to a WR or QB.
Virginia… that’s even better. Probably a better wunderlick score!

Whenever someone says OT are usually sure-fire bets, I always say... Robert Gallery...
The 49ers busted on early 1st round OT recently too. It’s not a gimme pick by any means. The typical ratio for success or bust in the first round, when looked at after three years, is about 50-50. I’m not sure if O-linemen have a higher ratio for success than other positions do… That would be an interesting fan-post for someone to do…

Come on
One Tackle in the last 5 years (Robert Gallery). The 49er you are referring to is “Joe Staley” and he was already a reach at taking in the first round. He only had 22 bench press reps for an OT! Plus, this is only his second year in the league!

The all time biggest O Line bust
was definitely Tony Mandarich

I concur
No argument there!

JagHomer
Wr’s and Qb’s to me are almost like a dime a dozen! I agree Lineman are alot safer!!!! Take a DB in the second round if we can.

Go Big early
It seems that we’ve got a consensus here. I’ve got a sneaking suspision that while we don’t know WHO the Jaguars will pick, I bet it’s an obvious one at the eight spot. Sort of like when we drafted Reggie Nelson.

LT or CB
I prefer Oher over Smith and Monroe. I still asked Santa for MJ but any of those 4 would be fine. If Jayson Smith is the next best OT then Id take Jenkins

IF THEY'RE THERE
The chances of Oher or Smith being there is highly unlikely! As said in my previous post Monroe would be the best option (with Oher already gone) Smith won’t fall to us, unfortunately!

Good idea
This would be a great pickup for the o-line and it needs it badly. We may not of had the greatest luck with free agency (Flor.and Porter) but I think this one could pan out, third time the charm. We need proven experience on the line, experience that we wont get with the draft. Remember that last o-line man that we picked up in the off-season in free agency was Pashos, who I think is our best o-line man.
