5 cents/question- Chicago Bears

Hello,

WCG here from Windy City Gridiron.  You got questions, I got anwsers, so long as you don't ask about our defense, offense, speical teams, Kyle Orton, Rex Grossman, Tommie Harris, Charles Tillman, Lovie Smith, Nathan Vasher, John St. Clair, Devin Hester, Mike Brown, Jerry Angelo, Bob Babich, Ron Turner or what happened during the Green Bay Packers game 3 weeks ago and Minnesota Vikings game last week.

How about some nice Matt Forte questions?  I've got lots to say about him.

So, how's Matt Forte treating you :-)

I was pretty high on Forte during the draft season, I’m glad to see him doing well.

Matt Forte will not win the Rookie of the Year

but he should. He is a more complete back than Chris Johnson. He doesn’t have the thunder to CJ’s lighting help.

Ryan is good and will win it, but he has benefited from having Turner be a monster this year and a surprisingly good defense considering what everybody though they would have. Forte is and will continue to be the focus of everybody’s D. Until our pass game can consistently hurt somebody that won’t change.

Ryan deserves Rookie of year

Matt Forte has had a very good season and he was a beast coming out of Tulane. But given the utter diaster ATL was as an enire frachise, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything what Matt Ryan has done there this year – it’s nothing short of miraculous.

I like the other one better

Because we’re allowed to ask about things besides Matt Forte. He’s pretty good by the way.

I’m gonna bring up Hester anyway. Your co-blogger said he wants to see Manning return all the kicks. You can read my full reply to that on his post, but I can sum it up with: What the F***?! Do you feel the same way? And why is he only returning punts? I know he hasn’t had the best year, but he’s still the greatest returner ever. I’m about to go into my rant from the other post, I better stop.

He is only returning punts because he is completely ineffective currently

I do not know if it is because his receiver duties are taking away, if he is over thinking or if he is running scared, but he is not himself.

He is becoming a liability. He is making poor decisions on when to field a punt and when to let one go. He is loosing yards and on the verge of fumbling half the time.

I think the point is until Hester and the Bears can figure the best way to use him without taking away from he does best they may need to remove some duties.

I don’t know what access you have to Bears games, but if you’ve seen Manning return you wouldn’t being as WTF. Manning has been outstanding and could return kicks on 85% of the teams out there.

I don’t agree with the idea of not starting Hester, but it has some validity.

BTW, feel free to ask non Matt Forte questions. I just had to fill up the 75 word minimum here.

No argument on Manning's ability

You guys are lucky to have 2 great returners. This discussion though, is going on in 2 different posts and I’ve already said more in the other one, so I’ll stick to talking about it in ‘Ask Windy City Gridiron’.

Forte

I’ve been paying attention to this guy all season and I have been seriously impressed with everything. I agree with you that he should be Rookie of the Year over anyone except maybe Matt Ryan. The guy blocks great, runs hard, is very durable, and has speed, power, and vision. He’s a complete back.

Some people might not appreciate what he does enough, but I’ve been watching Jacob Hester (also a 2nd round selection) because I live in San Diego, and Forte is light-years ahead of him. That’s good for the Bears because you guys deserve him after going through the hell that was Cedrick Benson.

Now that you have Kyle Orton at least playing at a decent level, what missing piece are the Bears needing to get back to Super Bowl form? When you made the Super Bowl it seemed like the QB was the only thing missing.

Oh boy

I’ll take this one.

1. OL. Olin Kreutz has been a mainstay, but he’s gettin old. We need to start over there.
2. WR. We need a #1 really bad.
3. SLB. Hunter Hillenmeyer has proven horrible in pass D.
4. CB. It’s been questionable as to whether Vasher will be with the team next year. Regardless, we need some help there.
5. S. Again, Mike Brown’s getting old.

Well, if we ignore

the fact that Orton hasn’t looked as good recently the two most obvious pieces are receiver and line. Our offensive line is swiss cheese. The don’t protect well and don’t open holes. If John St. Clair is out starter at left tackle next year, the league should remove the owners and start over.

It is hard to properly judge Orton when he has no protection and is throwing to a bunch of #2s and 3. The Bears need to make a play for a true #1. The popular talking points on WCG are Boldin and TJ.

Something that jumped out at me was that, despite being the 3rd largest market, the Bears were in the middle in terms of revenue

What’s the fan attitude towards the Bears? I’m sure you don’t have blackout problems, but have they generally been page 2 material compared to how the Cubs and White Sox have been?

If I had to guess the Cubs and Bears are always front page

If the Cubs are contending they will get the bigger headlines when the football season starts. If they are out of it or never in it, it is all Bears all the time.
