Greg Jones
Has anyone else felt like we missed Greg Jones just as much as our depleted O-line. I personally became sick to my stomach watching us line up in single back formations; MJD wasn't as effective as he's capable of being I rarely even saw Montel Owens in at FB. Is he that ineffective that they would go with out him (Owens) ? Did not see Ravens game. I have always thought Jones was a "BEAST" I just regained my appreciation for him.

Owens seems like a running back to me
He’s more a special teams guy who isn’t that big. There’s no way he could be a prototypical, every down blocking fullback.
Rediculous
Montell Owens as a FB, just makes my stomach turn. Again, here we go, with “shack” NOT making sure we had depth at a position with an injury prone plater! I like Montell “alot” however, he is not a FB. ST and 4th string RB…. Period…

I kinda have to defend Shack a little on that one
How many teams carry two fullbacks? Some teams don’t even carry one true FB, opting for more tight ends or an H-back or something. I think I am ok with us only carrying one Greg Jones and one guy that kinda knows how to play fullback too. Yeah, it sucks when your main guy goes down….but it sure sucks when any other starter goes down too.

Ah... he's on the team for special teams play guys...
He’s a standout special teamer who can also play back-up FB… he was a great late round pick. Lets not forget the fake punt for a touchdown this season by Owens, or the countless tackles he’s made. Let’s just throw him under the bus because Shack picked him and he’s not as good as greg jones.
I think he's a decent RB actually
BTW I don’t think anyone is throwing Owens under the bus. I, as well as others, just don’t think he can be a very good FB contrary to what Vic believed in the offseason when he said the team was better off letting Greg Jones go in FA, save the money, there’s not much fall off to Owens.
Truth be told I agree with MoveThoseChains, you carry one FB and someone else that can be some kinda hybrid. Besides they were trying to give Anthony Cotrone a chance before he was injured.
I actually think with more time George Wrighster could have been an effective FB. He actually looked pretty good when he was back there late in the year.
Fall back
But you have to have that one player you can fall back to to play it.. and my point was that Montell was not that guy…. And again, when you have an important position that has an injury prone player, you have to have a player you can rely on to be there for ya…

My point is that
Montell is about as close as any other team is going to have. If you can afford to sacrifice depth at one position on the offense, it’s fullback. It’s simply not as important as having multiple good receivers or depth on the offensive line or a good stable of running backs or even (or especially?) a competent backup quarterback. Two TE/no FB is a legitimate set to operate out of. I guarantee you that a backup fullback, if other teams even have one, is a special-teamer first and a fullback third. Yes, third.

The Facts
I am just stating the facts, not saying that I disagree with you, but I was just making a point about the Topic. A Chris Colley type player would be nice

I Agree
I have to say a good solid H-Back type player would be nice. He could fill in if Greg Jones gets hurt again, but he could also be part of the receiving game even when Greg is healthy. I don’t know if Marcedes Lewis will develop into a solid receiving tight end next year, if he doesn’t, we need all the help we can get catching passes.
There are a few people forgotten
George Wrighster, Chris Brown, Anthony Cotrone. All could have been H-backs. (Cotrone was more a pure FB) But Cotorone and Wrighster were hurt, and Brown was a victim of numbers. I thnk they wanted an H-back in the preseason but then realized Greg Jones was doing a good job blocking and Montell could be an ok backup. They also expected Wrighster to be back eventually too. Keeping 3 tall TE’s allowed Garrard another 3 receivers and blockers we needed. Estandia and Marcedes were the better pass catchers and Angulo was more of a blocker and even served as a 3rd tackle in a pinch if needed. However all were deemed too important as receivers/blockers to be let go for someone unknown like Chris Brown. And we were a little short on draft picks this year.
I'm not so sure of that
Wrighster provides us with an H-back. The other TE’s are too tall. Unless the OL becomes really good in the off season, I believe we will keep 4 TE’s.
That means only 5 WRs
We were able to keep 6 WRs and 4 TE’s this year only because Wrighster spent the start of the year on the PUP list. Once he returned we cut Jimmy Kennedy and Milford Brown. However, I highly doubt we’ll go into the season next year with 4 TE’s and 6 WR’s… something has got to give.
Well 5 Wr's is somewhat normal
and considering it’s starting to look more and more like Garrard needs lots of practice to get timing down, fewer may be better.
Remember how the timing got messed up between Garrard and Matt Jones after Matt got hurt for that one game.
Not to mention Estandia is a hybrid WR/TE anyhow. (He was a WR in college)
Also the difference between our worst WR and the best practice squad WR is probably very minimal. To be honest last year I hoped we would have kept 6 WR’s especially with Mike Walker(knee/ankle), Jerry Porter(Hamstring), Dennis Northcutt(back), and Reggie Williams(knee) all being hurt at the begining of the year.
Montell is Worth Keeping
I think Montell Owens is a guy worth keeping, as he is an outstanding special teams player and really is quite versatile. However, he seems to small to be a fullback, at least compared to the size and strength of Greg Jones. I think the Jaguars should make Montell one of the back up running backs, and maybe get an H-Back type player, or try to find one out of all of the tight ends this team has.
