2009 Scouting Report: CB Malcolm Jenkins

Jenkins stands 6-1 and weighs 201 lbs

Through 44 games at Ohio State, Jenkins has registered 175 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and 3 forced fumble. In coverage, Jenkins has tallied an impressive 11 interceptions and 13 passes broken up - including two interceptions he has taken back for touchdowns. Because teams try their best to throw away from him, he gets fewer chances to make big plays each year. Jenkins has excellent instincts and positioning in coverage. He's far less likely to get his hips out of position like other young corners, and makes fantastic breaks on the ball while it's in the air. According to the Ohio State Athletics website, Malcolm Jenkins runs a 4.3 in the 40 yard dash. That type of speed at his size would vault him to the top of draft boards without his impressive resume. Jenkins' speed will help him excel in the NFL, where recovery speed can make or break cornerbacks. If we don't trade our first rounder, Jenkins is the most realistic first round pick for the Jaguars.

Projected pick-top 10

Malcolm Jenkins

Iit SHOULDbe the best player available

The Jaguars should do pure BAP. They have needs everywhere. Were I to rank need, it’d be OT, DT, CB,OG LB, WR, DE, QB, RB.

Just take the best player at whatever spot we’re selecting from.

I don't really want to be at that spot though

With so many problems with the Jaguars I’d like to see them get a huge rookie class from trades down for more draft picks.

There's only one way to know he would be the BAP

that’s if he was the best player in the draft. I mean who knows who’s going to fall to us.
Personnally I’d like to resign Barnes and draft the best DT. If he’s not the BAP, trade until he is. (Granted that’s easier said than done)
Then we could get an athletic LT to groom. There are a number of good young CBs that we can draft later or get in FA.
However, I think we would be hard pressed to find an afforable DT in FA, especially a young one.

True... I have said in the past I'd be ok with giving Barnes an extension, but only until (like you said) his replacement is ready to step up

Then he’d be back-up.

I know that Del Rio was pretty high on Theo Horracks (an UDFA DT) who spent the season on IR. He’s as big as Henderson, and with a little coaching (although I don’t have faith in Ted Monachino) could go a long way with the kid. MKRISTO BRUCE was just signed to the active roster with Mathis going on IR, so the coaches must like his development. I’d expect we’ll see him active the final 4 games this season.

Meh, BAP is all fine and dandy, but

I don’t think Malcolm Jenkins is the answer were looking for right now. If Harvey and Groves develop and we can get pressure on opposing QBs again, then I guarantee our secondary will look better.

That

is why I don’t think we need a corner in first round. Some sort of lineman.
