Harvey "Presser" is Revealing....
I like the pick of Derrick Harvey for the Jags.
I think that if all goes well and as planned, this defense might kill somebody..it's just nasty.
When the Jaguars.com site finally got its act together and allowed me to read the transcript of Harveys press interview right after his selection, I began to wonder whether or not Harvey isnt very happy about being drafted by the Jaguars.
Now as we all know, all the players are inculcated into saying the "right" things and spouting the "party line" about their team and how much they love it and how excited they are etc..etc...(except for a few notable misogynistic miscreants like T.O. and company) and frankly that kind of crap always bores me. So when a player doesnt spout the party line it is revealing.
We may have another Eli Manning (read spoiled brat) on our hands with this pick.
His very first question and answer is one time he doesnt spout the party line and it is as follows:
(on being drafted by the Jaguars) “I was watching the draft with my family and I saw the Jacksonville Jaguars come up and I was like, ‘Oh, Jacksonville.’ I kind of figured they were going to pick me because they needed a defensive end.”
Now maybe Im reading this wrong..but I find there to be a lack of excitement in his answer. His reaction to being drafted by the Jaguars is "Oh, Jacksonville."
That's kind of like getting another tie on fathers day "Oh another tie." See my point? There is a glaring lack of excitement and that bothers me. Will Derricks head be in the game since he now "has to" play for Jacksonville?
The rest of the interview he begins to spout the party line until this question and answer:
(on his expectations as a rookie) “I am going to come in for the offseason program, work hard and get in the weight room, learn the plays, get with my defensive line coach, get with the head coach and some of the veteran players and just learn the system. Just come in and contribute. Whatever my role will be, special teams, defensive end, it doesn’t matter. I am just trying to help the Jacksonville Jaguars win more games than they did last year.”
In this one...he spouts all the right things til he finishes with the statement that I have in italics. Winning more games than last year would make the Jags 12-4 and not necessarily a Super Bowl winner. Most guys would have said something along the lines of "I want to contribute and help the Jags take it to the next level" or "I cant wait to get down there and do my small part to make the Jags a super bowl contender"
The answer is revealing in the fact that perhaps Derrick has no real motivation for being a Jaguar, especially when you combine this with his answer to the first question, "Oh, Jacksonville"
I hope he doesnt carry this atitude into training camp, because we dont need a player coming in and screwing up the chemistry this team has developed.
Derrick if your hearts not into being a Jaguar, you'll do more harm than good. Find an injury and stick with it on IR so the rest of the team can do their thing. We dont need a bad atitude or poor motivation bringing this Championship Caliber team down, cuz I guarantee you Quentin Groves wants to be a Jaguar and will be going "lights out" to prove it.
Groves was thrilled to be selected by the Jaguars.
"Man, this is everything I could have dreamed of," he said
So who is more motivated to play for the Jags? .....you tell me!

Yeah, you’re reading way too much into this. Derrick always has a even keel, laid back attitude. I go to UF. One day when I was getting a haircut, Harvey walked in. After a game he dominated with a sack or two everyone in the room was trying to show him love; joke with him. He stayed stoic and gave pretty much the exact same responses he gave to the media on Sunday. Thats just his personality. But as long as he brings it on Sundays I’m glad he’s on the team.

I see your point....
Optimus…you put forth a valid argument…but lets look at that moment Derricks point of view As a football star, everyone all the time is trying to show you love….you have girls trying to get with you because they know you have a future, not because they necessarily like you. You have guys trying to be your”boy” so they can have a good image around campus. Is it possible that perhaps Derrick has had enough of that and maybe he feels like he has to act stoic to discourage this behavior so that people will just treat him as “Derrick” not “Derrick the Quarta-Back Killa”? Perhaps all the people trying to show him “love” are the people he might be afraid are trying to use him and he just wants to not give them any ammunition…or perhaps he just had a fight with his Girlfriend and was feeling a little down at the time you ran across him…..we will never know until sundays…..I hope he brings the heat too and I am proven wrong…I really do….I want a ring and I want it NOW!!

“So who is more motivated to play for the Jags?” and “Who in the long term will turn out to be a better player for the Jaguars?” are two totally seperate questions. I know that I ended up answering ‘Grooves’ because I thought the question was the same as you had in the blog. More motivated? Sure, it may be Grooves. Better player? Harvey, as I see it right now. He’s way more complete, and still has room to grow. I don’t see Grooves becoming an every-downs defensive end. Perhaps if we were to switch to a 3-4 he’d become the better player for the Jaguars. But as I don’t see that happening, as it stands Harvey will likely become the better player.

Oops
Sorry, missed a typo. I ‘almost’ ended up answering ‘Grooves’ for the poll.

I like your thought process but.....
I see it like this (optimusPrimes comments not withstanding) A good player who has his head on his shoulder and is motivated will outplay and last longer on a team than a great player who doesnt care and his mind is not on the game. So the 2 questions are equal…the player that is more motivated will be the one in the long run that will be a better player. Also take a look at some other aspects of these two. Groves had more sacks than Harvey…and they played in the same SEC against the SAME opponents. It seems that players that dont get picked in the first round have a tendency to try harder to prove their worth (Maurice-Jones Drew is a perfect example) they have that chip on their shoulder…you add that chip with strong motivation and you have a good player that plays above his level. In addition…Groves with a little coaching and some weight room time can develop into an “every-downs” DE..all of the coaches have said that. That spells LONG TERM success for Groves.
I welcome your opinion.

not totally valid
you also have to look at who else was on the line. the UF line last year was TERRIBLE. there was no push from the DT position, and there really were no other DE players except harvey. cunningham lined up at the other spot, and while he is fast, he’s only about 6’3” and 240. they ended up putting DT and freshman in at the other DE spot. if you look at ‘06, harvey played on a line with other good players, and he was the best player. he had moss at the other end spot, and quality DTs lined up, getting a push up the middle.
simply put, harvey was the only player on the dline last year that had any pass rushing ability, so he was double teamed every passing play, if not triple teamed. no exaggeration. we’ll see how he does with henderson, mcdaniel, spicer, heyward, and whoever else lined up with him.

sure but...
I didnt see Auburn Contending for much less winning a national title….so what kinda d- line did he have around him? Nothing of the Quality Harvey had. The only reason he was double teamed was because he was the only player that was a threat…and it seems to me that Groves had the same situation, except for EVERY year not just 07 like harvey.

certainly better than the gators
auburn had two DTs drafted, and another picked up as a free agent last weekend. also, watching them play last year, their defense was much better than the gators. the gators had a terrible secondary, so they had to basically play a soft, passive defense, much like you saw of the jags in the play off game against the patriots. that doesn’t really help with sacks. harvey had 10 in ‘06, when the gators played a more attacking defense, with a much better secondary.

Auburn’s defence stopped UF’s offence pretty well, at the Swamp… not too many teams last year would have been able to do that. Even LSU – playing at Death Valley – had more trouble (it was the Gator defence, with its absolute inablity to get a fourth-down stop in the last ten or twelve minutes, that lost the game.)

My thoughts on Harvey
I think Harvey’s a really good player, I won’t say great, YET. In the 2006 season when the Gators had NFL talent surrounding him on the D-line, Harvey excelled. I haven’t analyzed the tape or anything but I assume that being a relative unknown allowed Harvey to get a lot of one-on-one situations. He obviously dominated in these situations. See the 2006 BCS championship game.
But I don’t think that Harvey is a transcendent player like Sean Merriman or Troy P of the Steelers. If the opposing team game plans for Harvey, he can effectively be erased from the game. I remember several times this season watching the opposing team march the ball up and down the field on the Gators as I prayed for Harvey to make a game changing play. Well that never happened. I know Harvey was playing with the one of the most inexperienced d-lines in college history (an undersized sophomore DE, a 5th string tackle, and a converted offensive lineman) and the worst secondary I have ever personally witnessed but it seems like a truly great player would make at least one unexpected awesome or game altering play.
Despite that last paragraph I think that Harvey will give the Jags a boost in the pass rush. Teams won’t truly game plan to stop him and he’ll surprise them with his athleticism and speed. However, I think that Groves will make a bigger splash in the NFL. He has a flare for the dramatic. He’s the type of player that will sack you, strip you, and return it for a touchdown; the stuff highlights are made of. This is not to say that Groves will be the better player, just the flashier player.

Glad we got 'em both...
It looks like teams weren’t that high on Merling overall so I’m glad we didn’t pick him up.

I'm dying to find out...
What happened at his workout. Did he perform poorly, or was the first round played out in such a way that he simply fell.

Miami had no reps at his workout...
So I’m guessing they took him on reputation alone.

Game Plan
But at least it’ll make the other team need to game plan against Harvey. Last year teams didn’t have to game planagainst our DEs.:P

Harvey will take time to develop...
Mario Williams disappeared in his first season with the Texans and I expect about the same from Harvey. What we’ll have to wait and see is what happens year two when he has put on some more pounds, is better conditioned and coached. I’m expecting similar numbers like Williams in his second year. If Jaguar fans are expecting DH to come in and fix our problem this year, they are going to be sorely disappointed. Groves will have the better year in 08 than Derrick, but I do expect Derrick to stop the run this year. Teams are going to be doubleteaming him and running left all year long if he is out there. There’s my two cence on the subject. Don’t bash me two hard for using Mario as an example.

i voted for groves, just because he is a sack monster. he easily has the ability to become an every downs DE. the thing is, both players are going to be playing DE on the jaguars line, at the same time. i personally think theyre both going to wind up being great DEs. i just think groves will be slightly better.

For some reason...
I’m more excited about Groves than Harvey. Maybe it’s because I had prepared myself for the team to select Quentin at pick 26, so I watched more film and studied him more than I did Harvey (who I had no idea the Jaguars would get their hands on).

I like Groves. Pro-Bowl Reggie Hayward was 225lbs when he entered the NFL. Groves had the enthusiasm when he was drafted, but he’s got to keep that fire. He’s got all the tools and some of the best veterans and coaches to learn from, all Groves needs is the desire to be the best DE in the league and he should fill out. He has less pressure to come in and produce like our first-round “reach” Harvey, so he can focus on his size and all the things associated with run-stopping.
I got the same feeling that Harvey wasn’t as excited to be drafted by Jacksonville but that should change. If it has to do with “team talent” or “superbowl potential,” he will soon realize that Jones-Drew, Feddy T., Garrard, Peterson, Mathis, Henderson..(get the picture?) are “team talent” enough and that the championship is within reach. His statement about helping them win more games allowed me to realize that he must not follow the Jaguars much at all. Take away a second-string loss and special teams failure to the Texans and getting jumped by the Titans and we not only surge to 13-3 but the race to division title looks much different.
Harvey should be fine but I think Groves has the true potential. He seems incontent to just work with what he’s got. I’ve got the feeling he wants to be pro-bowl caliber, and that’s great for us.
