2008 NFL Draft: 2nd Day Open Thread
We've got a couple of rounds before the Jaguars pick again and I've got some Radio City adventures in my future before I can toss up the "live blog".
Use this for draft talk, speculation, rumors, and ideas for what the heck we should do with two fifth round picks!

Go Jags!
Live from Radio City!
So I finally got in. The NFL “deemed us worthy” enough to get in!
Though we’ve got a few hours to kill before we pick…

Quote of the Day:
The trade that allowed the Jaguars to move up and select Harvey is probably the best draft-day trade I have ever covered. The value in it is fantastic. When I first heard of it, my reaction was that the Jaguars had probably given their second-round pick and next year’s first-round pick, too. When I found out that it had only cost them two three’s and a four, I was stunned. That deal killed the numeric table. Forget about it. It no longer exists.
From today’s Ask Vic.

There are a surprising number of people out there – and not just doofus fans – who believe Jax gave up a ton. (In fact, I’ve seen that precise phrase used more than once.) It might be nice if the commentariat spared a moment to educate the public (and themselves) in the relative value of different picks… would that be too much to ask?
Dumb.
I’m amazed that people that are supposed to know what they’re doing are hating on what the Jaguars did. They blew up the trade-value points system, they stole a top 10 pick without costing a single first day pick or future pick, and completely addressed their need.
Harvey was not going to make it past Buffalo at 12. 8 was a good spot.

For the first time since the draft started this morning...
The Jaguars have a representative at their table.
I think they slept in.
Also, the War Room is pretty desolate.

1st day of draft
I think the jags gave up too much for Harvey. I feel better about thier 2nd round pick. I hope Harvey is “Big Medicine” because the jags bet the farm on the DE poisiton.
This will either be a home run or strike out for 2008. Given the Jags drafting history – I confess to being nervous. This is the year that they MUST compete in the division (2 and 4 doesn’t cut it).
If Jax had been required to sacrifice their second – as everyone assumed they would to make a jump like that – I’d agree. But if two thirds and a fourth are “the farm”, then Jax isn’t a legit SB contender anyhow. Here’s our recent history in those rounds :
2007 – Mike Walker; Adam Podlesh, Brian Smith; 2006 – Clint Ingram; none in fourth; 2005 – Scott Starks; Alvin Pearman; 2004 – Jorge Cordova; Anthony Maddox, Ernest Wilford; 2003 – Vince Manuwai; George Wrighster, LaBrandon Toefield
Are there some quality players in there? Sure – but nobody who will make, or has made, the difference between being a very good team and being a great one.
I completely disagree.
I understand the logic, more late picks = more players, more chances of hitting on a guy. But realistically, there’s just no way that a bunch of 3rds and 5ths were going to make the team. Jacksonville got one of the highest rated players on their board for pennies on the dollar

We Are Next
I like:
Joshua Barrett S ARIZONA ST
It's not been announced yet, but more than likely it's a 6th and 7th round pick
So we can actually have a bit of a draft…

What did we get?
We traded with the cowboys for what?
143 for 5th 155 and 7th 213
We traded 143rd pick for the Cowboys 5th (155 overall) and 7th (213).

Bad NFL Wi-Fi
It keeps crashing, the “real media” writers are freaking out. It’s amusing. I’m struggling to stay online, which is why I can’t set up our normal style liveblog.
I’ll have the trade terms in just a min!

RUSH
They blast music between picks. It’s been all Journey and Rush. With a little Kelly Clarkson thrown in. Very Strange.
Jamie Dukes has a full time sweat wiper, poor lady has to keep the shine down.
Adam Schefler spends more time adjusting his tie than anyone I’ve ever seen.
There’s a Penn State fan who thinks everyone should be picking Anthony Moreli, their quatertback. Jacksonville interviewed him a the combine, but I don’t think we’ll bite.
Then again, I said we wouldn’t trade up for Harvey either…

Joshua Barrett S ARIZONA ST is a very good pick in the 5th!

Almost a pick.
I’d say with a near certainty that it’ll be Barrett.

Whew, dodged a bullet.
Matt Slater is the second best UCLA receiver in the draft, Brandon Breazell is better.

Del Rio
We should have known JDR would have gone with a LB from USC at some time
T. Williams
I go to USF and have watched the kid play. He’s a gamer. opposing QB’s threw his way alot to avoid Mike Jenkins on the other side. He responded with 13 ints. He’s got a little reputation for having a bit of an attitude though.
