Confirmed: Defensive End Paul Spicer will attend OTA's today (5/29)
[Note by River City Rage, 05/29/08 10:48 AM EDT ]: From the Florida Times Union:
Paul Spicer has decided to join the Jaguars voluntary offseason workouts even though he has yet to get a contract extension.
Spicer, who is in the final year of his contract, has been skipping the offseason workouts because he’s unhappy with the Jaguars’ offer.
After agent Drew Rosenhaus posted a clip on YouTube saying that Spicer would attend the mandatory workouts, he was contacted by the Times-Union and declined to comment further.
He then called back and said he talked to Spicer last night and Spicer has decided to attend the voluntary workouts "in the near future" because he felt too much was being made of his absence.
Spicer is expected to join the team Thursday for the final OTA this week.
A regular reader of Big Cat Country (Jaggernaut) reports Sam Kavouris said it on the news this evening. Honestly, I live in Tampa and don't remember this guy from my years in Jacksonville so I'm unaware of his precise role in the newsroom. If anyone has confirmation or information on Mr. Kavouris please comment below.
This would mark Spicer's first appearence at OTA's this year. He supposedly worked in the off-season to focus on improving his speed and pass rushing ability. It was widely uttered that he wasn't satisfied with the Jaguars contract extension offer, and if he is now attending OTA's then one side caved to get the deal done. Something tells me it wasn't Spicer in a rush to get a deal done and get back to "voulntary activities". The Jags probably upped the ante and promptly instructed him to step up and start setting a good example for the new talent. A contract dispute could cost us more in the long run.
[Note by River City Rage, 05/29/08 12:35 PM EDT ]: Paul Spicer's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, took to the fans to explain his clients desire for a new contract. Spicer, feels as though he belongs in the top 50 defensive linemen as far as salary goes, and makes his case in this YouTube video. Many fans have a resentment toward Rosenhaus because of his antics with Terrell Owens and Chad Johnson. In this case, no threat of holdout is made, he is attending today's OTA, and he will participate in Minicamp and Training Camp. I have no doubt that a deal is reached

Wonder what Spicer received?
I can almost understand Spicer’s complaint. Reggie Hayward makes a milion more than he does, Derrick Harvey will make much more than he will. Spicer is at the end of his money making life, after this there is nothing. He stepped up, did it all last year, is expected to hold the position this year and be the best DE at the lowest salary. He won’t push it much more, it is a great risk to assume there is a market above his current salary at his age with a new team. This is a short holdout for maybe one million more based on incentives. That is my guess. Both sides really need each other right now and neither has real leverage.

people whine
i don’t understand people’s hatred of rosenhaus. his job is to represent his clients to the best of his ability. i think he does a great job of that. if i were about 3 inches taller, 100 pounds heavier, and much, much faster, he would be my agent.

way to go spicer
Spicer has proved he is exactly who I thought he was. When we drafted our first two rounds I was excited because I realized immediately that they would be learning from one of the hardest working and best veteran DEs in the league. When he came back, BEFORE his contract was re-negotiated, because he is loyal to the team and a mature player, he only proved what I thought I knew about him. I’m excited for this- it represents exactly what the Jaguars team goes for- professionalism.
I can’t say enough about guys like Fred Taylor, Spicer, Mathis, Henderson, Peterson… these guys know what’s up. They play from the heart- they play football because above all, it’s a game. They stay in shape, and of course, they expect to be paid a fair amount. I wouldn’t expect Spicer to accept that he’s making the least when he has continued to be the most productive at that position. This guy is as much an asset to this team as Garrard or Del Rio are.
Other teams can say what they want about their high drafted players or superstars but what I love most about the Jaguars is that they seem to be a down to earth group of guys who don’t have that #1 superstar talent but play so hard and put everything together so well that on gamedays they generally come out on top.
You won’t find me getting down on a player for having a bad day if it was legitimate. Brian Williams just can’t keep up with R.Wayne, it’s not his fault- it’s too easy to blame him for R.Wayne’s catches when he just doesn’t have that kind of speed. But look at what he does against all the other receivers. ... The same can be told about any veteran on the team. These guys make do with what they have and push it to the max every time they get on the field.
Kudos to Spicer for attending so he can help guide the draftees through their rookie training and year.
