TE Position
Hey guys (and gals), it's me again, still trying to learn our roster. Now being a Cowboys fan, they have almost always had a great TE (Novachek and now Witten), I have looked over the Jags roster and I am not sure how we use the TE position and who is the best of the group. Now I know some will laugh at this but on Madden they have Lewis as the best of the group but again I am not sure who even started last year. (as soon as I finish this post I am going to check out last years stats for the TE)
If anyone could catch me up on the TE position I would be thankful!
Thanks,

8 on roster!
Now I know there is no way we are keeping 8 TE on our roster. Looking over the stats I can see that the TE is not the Red Zone TD guy here.
I am a big fan of using the TE inside the 20 to get those hard to catch TD’s.
So looking at last years stats we have:
Lewis – 37 catchs, 391 yds, 2 TD
Wrighster – 17 , 123, 1
Estandia – 9, 136, 0
Angulo – 8, 81, 1
Smolko – 1, 5, 0
Davis – 0, 0, 0
Rookies: Bishop and Brown
Totals – Respectable 72 Catchs by the TE Position last year, 736 yards, but only 4 TD’s.
I am going to assume that the TE is not featured in the Red Zone Offense!
So who will make it out of camp?

Lewis, Wrightster are locks
Estandia and Angulo fight for the third spot. I highly doubt the Jaguars carry four TE’s, just because they’re probably going to have 3 QB’s.

Lewis/Wrighster are one and two...
Both are very effective with George W being the better blocker. Lewis’ blocking has improved vastly under Mike Tice, and he is clearly the teams’ future at the position.
Estandia, Angulo, and Smolko are in a battle for the #3 TE. The team is more likely to keep 4 TE’s over 6 recievers so two of those may slip onto the roster.
Estandia is the local favorite due to his massive frame and above average hands, but Angulo and Smolko are both very talented as well. Angulo may actually be a better blocker.
The role differs based on personel
Lewis stretches the field, Wrighster is underneath man. On multiple TE sets the Jags are capable of doing virtually anything because all the TE’s are so well balenced. All can block well, a few very well, and all can catch. Play-action has the potential to skewer teams from this set.
Their role will ALWAYS be to block first in the Jags’ offense. Even with Dirk at the helm this is a run first team and you must block whether you’re a RB, TE, WR, water-boy, fan, or mascot. In DUVAL county that’s our style.
One more thing...
Chris and I are working on a piece sometime in the future which will detail the battle for the #3 TE spot and what’s expected from the position. Sometime in the Dead Zone as part of our VS series.

Better hurry
There may not be a story about the #3 spot soon. It is down to Estandia and Angulo. This will depend on who is healthy.
