Jaguars Draft Pick Signing: Defensive End Quentin Groves
Quentin Groves skips the cafeteria, he'd rather eat a SACK LUNCH!
Michael Wright of the Florida Times-Union reports that Quentin Groves, the Jaguars second round draft selection has reached a contract agreement and will report to training camp on time. The outstanding pass-rushing defensive end from the University of Auburn signed a deal with 1.355 Million in signing bonus, and 3.3 million in salary.
Wright also says that negotiations are ongoing with Harvey, but he may still miss the opening of training camp.
Film School:
I enjoy watching these clips far too much. Quentin Groves is my favorite pick of the draft.

I'll be there with you.
And by the way he was the first pick on my Jaguars Mock Draft.

Derick Harvey has the skills but
Quentin Groves has the desire. In three years, who will be better? Groves is this years MJD. He wants to be good and will be good. Derick better get signed and in camp or he may have a short career.

Man, I almost get shivers.....
watching Groves pursuit and closing speed! And when he hits or gets his arms around them, they go down hard. I can’t wait for the next six months to unfold. Adios Dead Zone!!!! Go Jags!!!!

This is the guy I have my eye on as a Colts fan not Harvey.
He has incredible speed.

Great News
Love watching those clips of Grooves tearing it up. I was high on Grooves before the draft, and I still can’t believe the Jags got him and in the second round to boot.
I am surprised to hear that Grooves is your favorite pick Chris. Especially after you felt so strongly that he was too light to play in a 43. What has changed your mind?
I also like to add that he has been training with Chuck Smith this offseason. Chuck Smith was a mean, aggressive, top notch DE for the Falcons for quite a few years. Smith consistently shut down backs who ran to his side, and had a wide array of pass rush moves. Which led to double digit sacks year in and out. His playing weight was around 250, so I hope Grooves who weighs about the same had a chance to learn all of his secrets.

NASF... Amazing commentary as always Bro!
Haven’t heard from you in awhile, hope everything’s been well… Great inside info about Chuck Smith, that’s interesting to note and speaks volumes about Groves’ committment to football.

You're right.
Research, time, and thought. The biggest kicker for my turn-around on Groves is that we have him AND Harvey. I was very uncomfortable with the idea of Groves as the “only” top end DE we get. It was beyond my expectations that we’d get Harvey AND Groves. That’s where my change of heart came from.
The combination of Groves and Gregg Williams is the real kicker. Harvey, in my opinion, will be the full time DE, Groves becomes the weapon of choice for Gregg’s attack package.
Glad to hear from you again NASF!

Sure does make you optimistic
“Madness (insanity) is rare in individuals – but in groups, parties, nations, and ages it is the rule.”
That I am seeing more and more this idea that Groves is the one to watch from our draft class has me concerned. Directly due to that being how I felt on draft day. Is it the closing speed that has us so smitten? Is it that Harvey’s final year was playing for a defense that was so young that Harvey had no help? I need training camp and our preseason games to work this confusion out. In reading the scouting reports I am concerned that a knock on both Groves and Harvey is lack of lower body strength.
However, here are some knocks that make me laugh:
Groves: Can be overaggressive and gets caught too far upfield at times. Flashes an effective spin move and has the lateral mobility to redirect inside after starting outside but relies on speed too much and hasn’t developed a variety of pass rush moves at this point.
Harvey: Relies on quickness too much and occasionally tries to sidestep blocks rather than stacking them up. Is quicker than fast. Shows good initial burst but lacks elite closing quickness as a pass rusher…doesn’t always use hands well and takes too long to long to shed blocks when gets reached.
Compare them to this guy:
He has a tendency to play too high at times. Runs around too many blocks and takes himself out of position at times, as a result. He needs to do a better job of using his long arms and hands to keep separation from blockers. He takes too long to disengage from blocks and will get frustrated by the double team too often. His motor runs hot-and-cold.
Mario Williams.
Now Williams is a “man” at 6’ 7” and 290+. Harvey and Groves can’t touch this.
Then there is this guy:
...is undersized, can be undisciplined and has room to improve. He can get washed out and struggles to stay square when holding the edge. He doesn’t always contain on the back side. He has limited pass-rush countermoves.
6’1” 268 lb Dwight Freeney
Groves and Harvey are in this size class. I don’t take issue necessarily with the negatives…it is an effort to find any area of improvement…there is no perfect player. But compared to 2 very successful DEs there is reason to believe that both Jags possess the tools to be successful at the next level. I’ll take Harvey’s quick first step to AT LEAST disrupt the QB timing. I’ll take Groves top end speed AT LEAST to push the pocket. I love that Harvey has the long arms to keep lineman away from his box. I love that when Groves beats you to the outside you’re not getting him. As noted, I’d love for them to get stronger from the waist down (if the scouts are correct) but I’ll play the fan and defer to my experience of watching SEC football. If their heart is in the game, these kids can be special.
If you would convince a man that he does wrong, do right. But do not care to convince him. Men will believe what they see. Let them see.

You should copy and paste this comment.
As a “FanPost”, and then I’ll front page it. Cause it’s very a very good argument. Well done!
