Camp News: Jaguars waive QB Smith and Del Rio speaks on Harvey

Campy_medium

The Jaguar signed veteran free agent guard Chris Liwienski today and waived quarterback Paul Smith.

Liwienski worked out with the Jaguars yesterday. He played with the Miami Dolphins last season and enters his 10th NFL season after starting his career in Minnesota before going to Arizona in 2006. He will wear No. 68 for the Jaguars.

Smith signed with the Jaguars as an undrafted rookie free agent in April.

I'm sure this is a surprise to quite a few people here who were expecting Paul Smith to compete for a roster spot. Hopefully this means that Cleo Lemon is showing he is a solid #2 QB and not that Smith was just that bad.

Breaking from his normal policy of keeping contract negotiations private, Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio expressed frustration Wednesday about the current situation with top pick Derrick Harvey.

Del Rio called the contract demands of this year’s top picks "ridiculous" and "outrageous," adding that Harvey — who enters Day 6 of his holdout today — continues to lose ground in a bid to make a significant contribution as a rookie.

"He’s falling behind, there’s no question," Del Rio said. "It’s unfortunate he’s not here. There were some deals in front of us that were outrageous in my opinion. [That] makes it difficult to have him here. We have a belief in where we’re gonna go and we still have a belief on where it’s gonna go, and right now we’re not in agreement. At some point, you lose so much that you don’t become as valuable. We’re not there yet, but it’s time to get into camp."

This says something that Del Rio is starting to speak up about this. If Harvey isn't signed by the end of the week, this could cause alot of fans to turn on him,

Who would have thought that Harvey...

would be a disruption to a camp that seems to be going smoothly except for the few injuries. The longer he holds out the more it looks like we made a mistake by moving up in the draft. Come on Harvey, play ball!

Swing and a miss...

I was completely wrong on Smith. I suppose it’s the O-line injuries that did it, but I really thought Paul had a future with the team.

Smith wasn't cutting it.

It seems like every camp report told of his inaccuracies. While most recent camp reports mention Lemon throwing touchdown passes. I think we’‘ll be fine at QB and it looks like the coaching staff feels the same way.

Unfortunately, the truth only comes out game-by-game.

the sad part is....

The deadlines for cuts were a mile off. If you have ever seen Paul play, you’d know that his skills are not shown in throwing routs in training camp. His skills are best when he is under pressure and rolls out and just makes things happen. Instead they cut him right before the first scrimmage… GREAT! now it IS Cleo Lemon and Todd Bouman. We have no choice do we? Hope David is taking his vitamins.

yeah but,

The madatory cuts were a mile away. Paul Smith has skills that are seen when under pressure in the game rolling out and hitting someone in the flat, not throwing routine pass plays under no pressure in practice. We could have seen how good he really was in the scrimmage …. but not now. I guess we will never know. Couldn’t cut him after the scrimmage?! Oh well, we still have Bouman and Lemon.

Hope David is eating his Wheaties and takin’ lots of vitamins.

Chaps my _ss!

Too bad for paul smith. He seemed to have the guts… but I guess that wasn’t enough.

This Harvey issue just gets me. Everybody has known the deal since April. Blame it all on the agents/reps. He’s going to hold out until late August. He thinks he deserves all this cash from the b.s. he’s been fed since college.
(Well, they told me I was going to make this great six figures when I graduated school and I jumped at the first one to offer me a quarter of that.)
He’ll miss half or a third of the games because he’s not ready. He’ll get pushed all over the field like Mario Williams his first and second year. He’ll have one break out season and then want to be traded because he doesn’t like the organization.

not be be rude

but that’s just crap. harvey and his agent had to see what the market was. now they see what ellis signed for. should they just say “who cares” and sign for under market value? can you go to a nice store and ask for a pair of deisel jeans for $50 since the store manager is nice? of course not. football is a business and harvey would be an idiot to cut the team a deal just because he’s nice.

by abeaugh on Jul 31, 2008 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah... business is business, but

The Jags moved up to get a defense pass rushing tackle/end. Not Harvey. He was the best available at the spot. And what do the experts say? he would have gone in the next three or four picks. Maybe! Chris Long went 2 and Lawerence Jackson went 28. Those were the 3 DE’s in the top end draft. Long, Dorsey, and Gholston were the premiere defense big men.

Yeah it’s business, but football looks to be one of those jobs that probably doesn’t suck that bad. I wonder if he can get employed in his major? Now I’m just being negative. Sorry.

If I would have only bought the Harvey jersey...

when it came out. Maybe there only $80 dollars away. That would have put the JagS bank roll over the top and could have afforded him by now. C’mon Harvey, let’s play some freakin football!!! It is about the money, but, earning a Superbowl ring as a rookie sure would look nice on his resume. Get to camp and be a PART OF A GREAT TEAM!!!!

Put it in perspective

Maurice Jones Drew makes $800,000 year. Harvey hasn’t done anything yet. This holdout shows a guy looking for one big payday. If Quentin Groves gets endorsement deals, good for him. He will be a welcome addition to the team. Derrick Harvey is following in Byron’s footsteps. Hold out, believe you are worth a lot and then be surprised when the bottom falls out.

Walk away from him Jags. Pay the people on the field.

Harvey and Keith Rivers are currently the only 2 players left who aren’t signed. This could get ugly really quick if things don’t fall into place very soon.

I can't help myself

Derrick Harvey is asking for more than:

Fred Taylor and Mike Peterson COMBINED.
Rasheed Mathis, John Henderson and Greg Jones COMBINED.
Reggie Nelson, Reggie Williams, Mercedes Lewis, Maurice Drew, COMBINED.
...and in the last group, throw in Justin Durant and Clint Ingram as well.
In fact more than our best 4 linebackers COMBINED.
More than all the other Defensive Ends COMBINED.

That is a lot of our football players in one salary with only a 50% chance to even play at an NFL level.

Something has to change and it has to change fast..

by Tkopa on Jul 31, 2008 6:35 PM EDT reply actions

Man... so many to agree with.

Good point Tkopa. And not only is Drew not getting the ‘big bucks’, but he is willing to play his best every down. He blocks better than any other back. He scored 26 times in 2 years…..isn’t that twice what Hester has scored? Yet, you don’t hear him bitchin’!

Harvey,.....take what the Jags offer you. They ain’t screwed any of our current players and they ain’t gonna’ screw you. Get your ass in here and play.
Oh, and trust me, they will soon reward MJD with an extension worthy of his skills. Loyalty is EARNED dude, remember that.

Garrard, Spicer, JDR, F.T....

to mention a few, all were rewarded to extensions after they performed well for the Jags. Harvey does need to EARN it!!!

Rookie Signings

The rookie saleries are going way over the top. Teams are signing players to the largest contracts in history to players that haven’t proven themselves, or even practiced yet. If I were a rookie I would sign the contract ASAP and be thrilled to just to get on the field.

This may be a bussiness, but its beginning to go over the top….

P.S. Didn’t Matt Ryan just get something like a 30% increase in pay over the guy who was picked in the same spot in last years draft? Thats just plain crazy….

by kujo24 on Aug 1, 2008 3:21 PM EDT reply actions

You are right about signing quickly

This rookie salary stuff looks like the housing market three years ago. It won’t last and it will be corrected. The shift is going to happen where proven players get paid, not rookies.

Derrick Harvey has a unique situation, take good Rookie money now, prove his worth and take real good free agent money later.

Or he could continue to holdout and have his agent ruin his chances at both. He is real close to this option.
