Voice of Reason

I know its bad when my usually sarcastic jaded soul has to be the voice of reason here, but I think it has to be said. This is Preseason people. Is it concern that we stunk up the place Saturday vs the Phins, somewhat. However, this will be far from our memories when we are 12-2 playing the Colts for the Division on Thursday Night Football in December.

Anybody else notice most position battles are for the last available roster spot or two guys who will be on the final roster regardless? Compare that to the Dolphins, who are practically starting from scratch.

Did the Super Bowl talk go to some players heads? Sure its possible, but how many other teams stink of the Pre-season. The Colts routinely go 1-3 or 0-4 in the Preseason followed by a 14-2 regular season.

What am I trying to say here? Just chill out everyone, don't hit the panic button yet, there will be plenty of time for that when real football starts.

I agree with you completely...

I’m curious if other teams fans are as over reactionary as ours. New England gave up a 17 play, 80+ yard opening drive to Brian Griese and the Bucs, are their fans panicing? I think if the Jags are going to be an elite team, their fans need to act as if they are one and not panic at the first stumble.

Yes.

Hell, the Titans WON, and people are up in arms.

Pats...

Tampa bay 27, New England 10, enough said about pre-season football…

Really though,

the worst thing about that game is it gave the Dolphins fans artificial hope for their season. Seriously, I haven’t stopped hearing it from my dad all day. He’s a long time fins fan, and we have a $5 bet that the fins won’t get 6 wins all season. So I bet him another $5 that the Jags would more than double the Fins regular season win total.

He mistakenly took that bet. Come December, I’ll have $10 from the old man! hehe

by Pyrofish on Aug 18, 2008 12:49 PM EDT reply actions

I think the Fins will surprise people. I doubt they’ll hit .500, but I think they could be one of those 6-10 teams that could have gone 11-5 with a few breaks.

Fair enough

It is pre-season, and some kinks need to be worked out. Still, so far we appear to have all the same problems as last year… and I’m not sure what to make of it. Do I just assume all these problems will go away within the next 3 weeks, despite no evidence of progress?

I guess my real problem is that I’m too much of a fan :) I want “my” Jags to dominate every team they play, whenever they play! I want Groves to play like a superstar… right now (even though I know it was never realistic to expect him to learn all the tricks of the trade before the END of this season, or even next). I want Walker to dazzle opponent defences, I want our secondary to destroy opponent offences. I want us to lead the NFL in sacks etc. etc.

In short, I need to be more realistic :) I need to remember that despite how badly they did play, 1 fumbled football, 1 dropped catch and 1 overthrown ball changed things massively.

Pre-season

Don’t put much stock in it. You’re right to be the voice of reason here. And yes, I’m being serious.

Sure, you Jags fans should be concerned with the WR depth and health, not having Derrick Harvey, and the secondary, but it is better to have those concerns in PRE-season than in REAL-season.

QB 2 or 3 ?

Vic Ketcham mentioned something in his article monday that makes me have to ask you guys who are on top of the roster selections: With Boughman’s performance against Miami, will JDR be less inclined to cut him or will he be sent to the practice squad? How will this affect the overall makeup of the roster? You have to know things are tight with the injuries that are being carried on the active roster going into the opening of the season.

Preseason 4 may see a lot of Lemon versus Boughman play?

by Jaghomer on Aug 18, 2008 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

I think thats pointless conjecture at the moment. Unless Bouman has another great game next week, I doubt Del Rio will keep him. It’s nice to be able to sign a guy who played in the offense, but I think its a luxury not a necessity.

Don't panick yes but...

As fans we can’t do anything anyway so there is no panick.
As coaches, panick leads to silly moves such as big contracts to unproven rookies or past their prime free agents. It leads to instability in the team as someone gets let go before I do mentality sets in. It is destructive and I trust Jack and Shack to stay the course and make the proper adjustments.

But there is reason for concern. A less than stellar season could begin a downhill slide for the team here in Jacksonville. Expectations verses a bad reality would not sit well after the big contracts that were awarded. As a Browns fan from way back, I watched the demise of the team before leaving for Baltimore. It happens to the best franchises. Big contracts, poor season, low attendance, BANG – major financial problems and desperation sets in.

The jaguars schedule is not easy and the first four games are horrible in terms of other teams desire to win. Jacksonville won last year on raw determination and play makers, key third downs, key interceptions, big plays. Take a couple of plays here and there away and BANG – 8 and 8. That is the NFL. The 8 and 8 season before had weird things happen, a last minute interception in Washington, an interception fumble in Buffalo. Four picks in Tennessee, a stupid Houston game and it all fell apart.

So we are 2-2, don’t panick. Still 12 games to go. So we are 5-4, don’t panick, the easy part of the schedule is coming. So we are 6 and 7, we can still make the playoffs. Hope springs eternal, and that is all we have right now, hope. Nothing has been shown on the field and that is cause for concern.

I think the point is....

Don’t panic because it’s the PRE-SEASON. Had that been a regular season game, than few people would be saying “don’t panic”.

Look at the results for teams like the Colts and Patriots over the past few pre-seasons… they never look that good yet they keep winning 12+ games during the REAL Season.

If we get handled @ TEN like we did at home last year, then I’ll be concerned. Until then, I’m confident the team will rebound from Saturday’s game.

Tony Dungy never held that press conference

I understand if a team is trying new things that don’t work out. I get that it is pre-season. I get that the record is meaningless.

I also get the disappointment on Jack Del Rio’s face. I also get the veterans hanging their heads. I also get David Gerrard picking himself up off the turf every pass play.

My concern isn’t that the Jaguars didn’t try because it was a pre-season game, my concern is that they are trying and not succeeding. Unless shown otherwise, there is legitimate reason for concern.

Now if I were a Giants fan after last night’s performance …

Tony Dungy

never says anything negative about his team.

Not Panic - reality based concern

Panic is one end of the spectrum, everything is fine, it is just pre-season is the other. Somewhere in between the 2008 Jaguars will emerge. They will either have holes the opposition can exploit, or they will cover the problems and find a way to win.

Right now, based on the evidence on the field as shown by the starters, there is work to be done. We all agree to that, I hope. Let’s see how the coaches and players respond. That is the joy of being a deeper level fan. We can see and appreciate the subtle changes that create a winner.

One thing I don’t subscribe to is Derrick Harvey will cure all of the problems on the defensive line. I watched Quentin Groves struggle, I believe Derrick will too, if and when he ever becomes a professional football player.

The Giants went 1-3 last pre-season....

and their fans were calling for Eli to be benched and Coughlin to be fired !

Yeah, panic is required!

Pre Season

I consider myself an extremely knowledgable fan. I know that it’s pre-season BUT there IS reason for concern. 1st – D line is weaker, not stronger than last year – Bobby McCray better than Harvey / Groves combined. Groves is a speacialist at best – he will get dominated physically as was very evident last Saturday. D Line has absolutely no push and is now being dominated in run game to boot.

WR is huge concern – unproven to say the least (Poter & especially Williamson) and riddled with injury. 2 Hit Walker (ball hits Walker, then hits the ground) is not the answer. O-Line is weaker with Measter injury.

I look at preseaon effort and execution not final score – so far Jags get an F.

Look at all of the expected top teams...

How did they do this past week ? And I’m also talking about execution, not the final score.

The Cowboys looked terrible against Denver…

The Packers looked terrible giving up 34 points to the 49’ers…

The Patriots gave up 27 to Tampa Bay including a 17 play, 80yd opening TD drive. Do you think they’re worried ?

The Colts defense allowed the Falcons Michael Turner to have 100+ yards on 4 carries!

Excellent

observation! That’s what pre-season football is all about. It is what it is, pre-season…

by jagsfanbrunell on Aug 20, 2008 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

What did McCray do last year?

And Meester was hurt during the Jags second half run. Last years playoff team looked horrible against the Titans last year and look how things turned out. People who are panicking because of one preseason game are overreacting!

by Jaggernaut on Aug 19, 2008 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

Meester

was hurt early in the year, not late in the year. If my memory serves me right he came back after the bye week, and he definitly had a positive effect on the team.

by Ewdtrey on Aug 19, 2008 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

You are correct

Meester missed the first 4 games(5 weeks including the bye) last year and sat out the final game along with most of the starters.

by pksiv on Aug 19, 2008 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

You are right...

I stand corrected. Who asked you anyway? jk!
