Derrick Harvey's value diminishing
Some of you guys should go back and look at the players we could have had in camp that we gave up to grab this guy. Some points that I would like to make about Derrick and the 2008 draft are that we did give up our 1st round and both 3rd round picks to reach up and grab this fella. In hind sight, I went back to the draft board on NFL.com to see who we could have potentially had if we had just drafted those picks. It is pretty uninspiring to think of some of the top talent that was still available to us that we could have selected.
Another point I would like to make is this, almost all mock drafts that I can remember had Harvey going at or around the twelfth pick in the draft, so with that said, we actually gave Derrick a considerable pay raise by 'reaching' up to grab him at the eighth spot in the draft. Why all of this fuss about his contract? From what I have read and heard on the air, he is getting a more than fair deal based on last seasons number eight pick, Jamal Anderson. I believe it was a ten percent increase in fact, but don't quote me on that.
My point is that at this point in the contract negotiations, he may not be able to provide an imidiate improvement to this years squad because he has missed too much time. We gave up valuable draft picks and reached to draft him ahead of where he might have been actually drafted by another team. Sure that gives Harvey's agent more ammo to negotiate with, but come on, enough is enough. If he signs his contract with what the team has offered him, he'll still make a considerable amount more than what he would have gotten had he been picked at #11 or #12. What are your all thoughts on this subject? I'm starting to think we would be better this year with three extra players on the team right now than one selfish holdout. I would be surprised if Harvey has any real considerable effect on our teams defense this year due to time missed.

nope
the team didnt’ draft for value, they drafted for need. They got what we need, now the two parties need to find a compromise and start working together. I watched Derrick through all 3 seasons at Florida and I am impressed with his upside. Yes he may be a bit below the pay-grade but if he contributes then it will be all good. Plenty of 1st rounders don’t pan out to the value a team assigned them.

I remember reading that one deluded Jag fan
Thought that Harvey and groves were going to combine for around 20 sacks.
And for a minute I thought that they might get around 12, which would be big for you guys.
Who’s really to blame here? Harvey or the Jags FO? I’m not 100% sure, but surely if you trade up into the top 10 you’ve got to expect to pay the player you select a premier contract, that is until the NFL gets its butt into gear and designates a rookie wage scale.

Have you heard of the CBA ?
The NFL can not now, nor never will be able to “designate a rookie wage scale”. This is something that needs to be agreed upon by the Players Union. Good luck with that.

Of course I knew all of that
Currently the union leader will agree to no such thing, but from what i’ve heard, he’s a douche, and soon to be out of a job.
When veterans like Mawae speak out against what these rookies get, something should change.

I remember reading that one deluded Jag fan
Derrick has a 20% pay raise from last years # 8 pick and just about #9 money this year what Derrick needs is a new agent

Let's be real
I want him in now just as much as you guys but you have to be a realist. The average pro football career is still in the 3 year range. If Harvey is a bust he will only have this contract to survive on. Is it more than any of us have or would make absolutely, however when you look at it from his perspective you can kind of see where he wants to max out this deal. Greed or not he still has the upper hand and at some point he (or the Jags FO) will get antsy enough that someone will eventually cave in. I just hope it’s sooner than later!

Right on the $$...
I agree with MikeMo completely. It’s now time for someone to give. Let’s get him on the team and start 2008 fresh. The Jags are apparently so close that neither side would “lose” if the agreed to the terms of the other side. Let’s go!!!

Don't you people remember 2000-2004 ?
Why do you think that happened ? Because in 1998-1999 the Front Office signed some irresponsible contracts. Giving in to Harvey’s agent now would be just that. Hold firm.
My feeling is if he hasn’t signed once the season starts they should REDUCE the offer and even tell them that will be what happens right now. He won’t sit out the year and come September 7th he starts missing paychecks. If he does choose to sit out the season, he’ll be losing $10M+ since next year he’ll be lucky to be a top-20 pick, let alone a top 10.

The Jags drafted Harvey and Groves to get after Manning. Based on what I’ve seen out of both, it doesn’t look like either will be doing that any time soon. Enjoy fighting off the Texans for that wild card spot!

I guess it's a good thing
that we play the Colts on a Thursday this season. Bob will be all out of pulp.

Interesting Position
I guess I could counter that from what I’ve seen of Manning I can’t imagine the Colts repeating as AFC South champs.
If you would convince a man that he does wrong, do right. But do not care to convince him. Men will believe what they see. Let them see.

Peanuts for Pink Elephants
Peanuts are hard to swallow. But peanuts are how Harvey will be paid if he goes back into the draft next year. But he’s no mistake. The Jags made a good pick. There is plenty of upside. The Jags will hold firm on their offer. And Harvey is not stupid or greedy. He’ll sign soon. He’ll be rich. He’ll tackle, he’ll sack, he’ll attack. It will all work out for everyone. Except for his agent. Here’s hoping someone stakes that vampire. HA!

I just read that the Jags upped their offer
And Harvey’s Agent rejected it…
The Jaguars increased their guaranteed offer to the defensive end, who was the eight overall pick, from $16.88 million to $17.2 million according to ESPN.com. That is $2.3 million below the $19.5 million that New Orleans’ Sedrick Ellis received in the seventh slot and $1.8 million more than Keith Rivers of Cincinnati got in the ninth slot. It’s almost $1.9 million more than Jamaal Anderson of Atlanta received in the eighth slot last year.
The Jaguars increased their base package from $21.140 million to $23 million, and their total package remained at about $33.64 million.
Again, once the last pre-season game is played, I seriously hope that they REDUCE their offer to him. Someone needs to stand up to these Agents and I don’t have any problem with it being the Jaguars.

I would love to see Harvey signed!!!
Although I really would love to see Harvey signed and have an impact this year, I’m so pissed off that I agree with pksiv. I don’t care enough to see him get paid MORE than he deserves. I’m with the Jags and hope they DO reduce the offer. He is most definatly not worth as much now as he was prior to training camp. He could have had a major impact this year, but now he wont. Therefore, he is worth LESS now than before. Time to make an example of this greedy agent and just say “no”, we will not be held hostage.

Unbelievable!!!
I cant believe that they are so close in numbers but still can sign the guy. You would think that someone in Harveys family would be telling him to shut up and sign by now. If he was my kid he would be driving to work in a brand new lexus because he got smart and signed the contract.

funny you say that...
but I was thinking that exact thing. I would think that it would be Harvey’s mother, Kim Gaston. I saw her on an interview after he was drafted and she seemed very strong willed and down to earth. I would think SHE would be the one pushing him. And after listening to her interview, I bet he would listen to what she tells him to do.

The Derrick Harvey Paradox
Signing Derrick Harvey probably means saying good bye to Mike Peterson and Reggie Hayward. The salary Derrick will command does force hard decisions.
I am not afraid of these decisions, but the ones involving Maurice Jones Drew, Darryl Smith, and others coming up for free agency do concern me. I’m sure the Jaguars front office has this all under control but I know they think about this a lot. That is their job and it just got tougher. Even three places lower in the draft would give more cushion financially to maintain a balanced payroll. To those that say the Jags should have known and should pay, they need to understand the facts. This is a very strange situation financially.
I do wish the Jags had managed to obtain a free agency DE that was proven instead of this route. The price is very high either way, but at least we would know what we had. Not having any idea of Derrick Harvey’s ability or motivation and negotiating a giant salary is too much risk for my blood.
I was there when Art Modell paid a huge salary to Andre Rison, borrowed from three banks to do it. It started a financial slide for the Browns that led to a move to Baltimore. I’m not saying Derrick Harvey is the end of the Jacksonville Jaguars, but I am saying paying big salaries to people that don’t play takes away from the product on the field and that hurts financially. I hope he is what they think he is when he signs and does not become a prima donna with mystery injuries. This signing is a very important move for the Jacksonville Jauguars.

Endorsements
Harvey is holding out for $ 1-2 million. How much is he losing in edorsements? A Gator going to Jacksonville. He could have owned the city!
by JAGS1995 on Aug 23, 2008 10:48 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He's have to get in line...
behind other notable Gators already on the team… you know – Fred Taylor, Reggie Nelson, Mike Peterson…
And Jacksonville isn’t New York. There’s not exactly millions of Dollars in endorsement revenue up for grabs. What he should take into consideration though is that lack of a state income tax which will save him millions compared to his tax liability in NY.
