Game Preview: Jacksonville Jaguars at Tampa Bay Buccanneers

135px-tampa_bay_buccaneers_helmet_rightface_medium                                           Jacksonville-jaguars-helmet_medium

Kickoff: 7:30pm August 23rd, 2008

Where: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL

Weather: 84 degrees, 30% chance of rain

The third preseason game is probably the only one that comes close to justifying the ticket price. The starters should play well into the 3rd, perhaps even the 4th quarter. The Jaguars came out somewhat flat last week against the Dolphins, hopefully things will get better tonight. The Buccaneers are the defending NFC South champions, which is like saying you're the Spelling Bee Champ of the Special Ed class. Led by the man no one wants Jeff Garcia, Tampa comes in this season looking to make another playoff run.

Things to Watch for:Jacksonville Jaguars

1. David Garrard: Garrard has looked very average and inconsistent this preseason so far. Is it because of the injuries at WR, the play of the O-line, or did he do a little too much partying with that fat new contract over the offseason?

2. Wide Receivers: Matt Jones has helped his career out this camp and Pre-season, and so have alot of the other receivers. Mike Walker has dropped multiple TD catches and Troy Williamson has had a grand total of nothing.

3. Rashean Mathis: Face it, Mathis has not looked good at all the preseason. Last year he was up and down, and it has continued to now.  Can he regain his 2006 Pro Bowl form?

4. Pass Rush: Can Reggie Hayward make a comeback? Can Quentin Groves be able to be effective?

Things to Watch For: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

1. Quarterbacks: Poor Jeff Garcia, all he does is help lead teams to the playoffs then they kick him out. It was close that it would be Brett Favre who would be starting tonight. The Bucs have a stable of QBs that they don't know what to do with.

2. Cadillac Williams- The Cadillac has had alot of parts break on him since the Bucs drafted him in the first round out of Auburn. Can he begin to put together a full years worth of games?

3. Aqib Talib- The Bucs first round pick at corner this year. There are the off the field issues with him, including the fight he was involved in at the rookie symposium. However, his physical gifts can't be denied.

4. Jon Gruden-After leading the Bucs to the Super Bowl, Chucky was on the hot seat until last season's division title. Can he keep it up?

Player on the Hot Seat

Troy Williamson
Williamson looked great in shorts practices, but has done nothing in game. With Porter, Williams, and Northcutt all assured a spot and Matt Jones and Mike Walker looking more impressive, he needs a big night tonight make it past the first round of cuts.

Expectations

Hopefully last week light a fire under their asses and the Jags come out with purpose tonight. I expect to see better execution and the Jaguars not to be knocked around like the Dolphins did to them last week.

Predicition:

24-10 Jaguars when both teams starters get pulled.

PS, Hope everyone is safe from Fay or didn't sustain too much loss. Tallahassee is getting 3-4 inches a hour currently, the dorm downhill from mine has a good 6 inches of water around it.

Water level

On my street, the water was about knee high, and I’m 5-11.
My street is a cul-de-sac, and has poor drainage though.
The Jags shouldn’t have any problems playing in their stadium, because the tornadoes (I think there was 3) didn’t make it to Jacksonville.
Hope everyone is okay!

I have to disagree with...

a few things.
First I think Mathis has been playing well. Roddy is an under rated WR and his big catch came on a coverage break down, and the fault is unknown. I think it was just a good play call by the Falcon’s offense. Let’s not all blame Mathis. If Pennington had thrown one of his short outs on target, Mathis would have a pick-six.
I think both passes targeted to Williamson were badly thrown balls. The one that everyone said was not caught because Williamson pulled up, wasn’t his fault. He pulled up because Garrard threw to the outside when he should have lead Will’ inside considering Will’s inside position on the corner.
Also I want to go back and set something straight. At my surprise and dismay, it wasn’t only Groves who caused the Run defense to play as badly as it did. It was Rob Meier who got dominated by RG # 66 Donald Thomas. At least Groves held his point when met straight on. However He needs to keep his head on a swivel because he was knocked out of plays when he was hit from the side. As long as he’s not lined up on the strong side he should be more effective.
Also IMO Ingram is outplaying Durant who is outplaying Mike P. Ingram stops the run well inside which we are having problems with.
People are saying that they are disappointed with the effort our team has shown, but that probably means they can probably turn it on and really dominate a team if they stop worrying about getting hurt. So their lackadaisical attitude is actually a ray of sunshine that I saw from last weeks outing.
On our offensive line: I think we have a problem at LT, but like I suspected before Richard Collier is a pretty good swing tackle. Vince Manuwai is struggling in pass blocking and he looks like he needs to lose a little bit of his weight to get some more foot speed. Also like I suspected, Miller is probably better suited as guard and I think the coaches agree with me considering where he got his reps.
Anyone that thinks Bouman is better than Lemon, let me remind you of a few things. Lemon played with backup offensive lineman against starting D linemen(at least for a while) . Lemons stats suffered partly to due to some bad drops including a great TD pass to Walker. Also I know if Lemon is feeling a lot of heat, like many backup QB’s get, he can scramble better than Bouman. In Bouman’s first of 2 series Todd profited from a chincy hands to the QB face call on the Dolphins. Then he threw a nice pass to Hoag who had at least a step on the DB’s. Then came the hurry up offense on Bouman’s second drive, where he took a bunch of underneath stuff that the defense gave him. This obviously padded his stats. Not that Bouman is bad, but I think Lemon is more than a serviceable as a backup QB.
Harvey get in here!
