MATT JONES...

His time has officially come!  Excuse me if this aricle is not up to par as I am inebreated, however I have seen what we as Jaguars fans have come to hope of our former first round pick.  Quite frankly, I am astonished at the level of performance our WR is displaying this preseason.  Jerry who?  At this point, I don't think we even need him!  Matt Jones is looking like the WR we envisioned him to ultimately be.  Just like Vic Ketchman said in his daily column; he wanted to see him go over the middle for the tough catch and he did it!

Matt is catching everything thrown his way.  You can make a case for that INT tonight, but the fact remains he is still the most valuable asset this team has as far as a recieving threat concerns.  It is time for all us Jag fans to tip our hats and give credit where credit is due.  Last season was Matt's third year in the league and he hardly played.  Granted, he missed that catch in the postseason game against the Patriots, but he looks as though he is figuring it out.  I have to think that his arrest had a lot to do with his emurgence, but still, he is making plays left and right.  Let's all rally around him and embrace this talent that may take us to the next level.  With Porter's injury, he has the opportunity to be featured as a true number one reciever before his contract expires.  Way to go Matt!  Make us all proud, bro!

He's made major strides

but it’s only preseason. Let’s wait to see what he does when the games count before we declare him the player we expected him to be.

I like a lot

about Matt Jones. I think he has really turned things around. I still have a few concerns. I think he is little bit of a liability in the run game when blocking from the pseudo TE position. I would also like to see him fight for the ball when it’s a jump ball. He should win 90% of those 50-50ies. He should practice being a DB against some of the TE’s. I think that could probably really help him. Still I think he’s played really well. Can’t wait for the season to start.

Yup

Liked what I saw. The interception was under thrown and Matt was being mugged by 2 defenders. Blocking wise – I saw 2 really good blocks thrown by Jones. 1 from the closed tight-er end and one down field on a C. Washington carry.

I just really hope this is for real. I hope his ole’ man lit his ass up and staightened him out. I mean lets be for real here. I bet that if Matt is putting up big numbers by October rather than just barely being noticed, somehow his case will be viewed as a first time offender case rather than “let’s make an example of this guy” case. Call me a realist. Kind of like gas prices falling before the election. Wasn’t like we just discovered more oil.

Anyhow good luck to Matt, realize you f’d up, almost threw your whole life away to party like some punks in college, and get down to business by getting through it.

Matt Jones Opinion

I am beginning to think the Jaguar fans actually love Matt Jones but feel let down by him. The Matt Jones bashing isn’t based in a true dislike, but rather an unreturned affection. If he actually lit the place up, he might have quite a fan club.

I thought a turning point in Reggie Williams career occurred last season when he scored a touchdown and leaped into the stands. It was his declaration of bonding saying “I’m here for you”. I loved that moment and his performance after that.

If Matt Jones had that kind of breakout, I believe he would also be warmly embraced. I hope it happens and also he leaves Cocaine behind him. He has no reason to destroy his life.

Matt Jones must go!

Matt jones needs to be cut from this team. Did you see what Troy Williamson did in the game against the Redskins last night? OMG! The guy is money ! Thats the guy we need on this team,Troy Williamson will help us win games. Matt Jones always looks good during training camp and he always reverts back to trying one hand catches and dropping every other ball thrown to him during the regular season. I think for the good of this team Coach needs to send Jones packing just like he did Leftwich.Jones will probably be suspended part of the year for his felony narcotics possesion arrest this summer anyways. We need our recievers to play all year if we are going to be a better team than last years team.

Williamson had 1 decent game...

and has an even bigger history of showing flashes before fading…

I think Jack is going to keep 6 WR’s to start the season. They’ll put Witherspoon on the practice squad until Porter is able to play and then they might release one of the WR’s and bring him up to return kicks. I’m sure that’s why they’ve stopped “showing” Witherspoon and have used Williamson as a return man.

As I wrote here after Jones got busted the Jags were right not to release him; sometimes an event like that is the kick in the butt a person needs to get on track, and it appears to have happened with him. Garrard’s comments are troubling, tho … until this year Jones had to ask what he was supposed to do on every play? A former quarterback? The guy is either thick as a brick or has been totally unfocused. And I agree with keeping 6 receivers and having Northcutt return kicks … the Williamson experiment has to play out, could be a huge upside.

pksiv is retarded.

Pksiv you are quite the idiot. Witherspoon has not spent one snap on offense this preseason and He isn’t returning because he has a tweaked ankle. Know the facts before you write false stuff. And Keef I don’t even know what to say about your dumba$$. Jerry who? Don’t diss the best receiver we have on this team. Porter could be Pro- Bowl. He was just on a bad team in Oakland. Matt Jones still hasn’t done too much and definitely nothing fantastic. I didn’t have an account until I saw your two comments (pksiv and keef) but I had to comment on your retarded comments.

hey, I can respect your opinion...

Jerry is going to be a good player for us this year, if and when he get’s back to playing. Until then, let’s pull for what we do have to work with in the mean time. Welcome to the forum btw!

Who said anything.

about Witherspoon playing offense? The Jags don’t usually keep 6 WR’s so my comment was that they might put witherspoon on the PS and keep 6 until Porter is healthy, and then make a decision on which WR’s to keep. That would give them more time to evaluate them.

And I read Del Rio say that about his ankle but of course he’s not going to come out and say “We’re hiding him”. I mean, how retarted would that be ? And if his ankle was so bad, why was he out there playing CB right before the half ?

Reggie was the talk last preseason...

this is the Matt Jones year. It took Reggie until his fourth year to break out and we were all rewarded for our patience with him. I feel the same can be said regarding Matt Jones. This is his fourth season and last year he hardly played as a result of the Coach’s decision. Could Matt be this years Reggie? I think we will all have to wait and see, but I do not expect Matt to break Reggie’s TD record by no means, just make plays and run after the catch. Let’s all be honest about this, he is going to make the roster and will be a part of this years Jaguars team. Let’s praise Matt for his hard work, recognize that we all make mistakes and understand that what is best for Matt, the team and the fans is for him to make big plays this year. I just hope that he does exactly that this year. Good luck Matt, I had almost given up on you! Make yourself and all us Jag fans proud this year.

Don't trust Matt Jones!

During the time Matt Jones has been part of this team have you ever seen him go deep and get open? No never ! I am not sure but I think Matt Jones and Troy Williamson came into the league the same year, right?Troy Williamson is a natural wide reciever but Matt Jones is isn’t,Matt Jones was a Quarterback in college and the jaguars are trying to convert him to a wide reciever.(An experiment that I don’t think has worked out at all.) In my opinion since both guys came into the league the same year and this 4th yr is supposed to be the year that the light is supposed to come on for these guys why not go with Troy Williamson the guy that can get behind the other teams defense and make plays instead of Matt Jones the guy that you have to hope can out jump whoever is covering him to catch a pass because he can never get separation from coverage. I just like the idea of a deep threat wide reciever more than the idea of an ex quarterback playing reciever that can jump. Now that I think of it ,has Matt Jones really out jumped anybody yet.

p.s

I have a Matt Jones Jersey too,so you know it is not easy to give up on him but I think the guy is holding the jags back now.

Holding Back

How would he be holding them back? So far he’s been 1 of our top producers. And even if its the preseason, he’s still catching every ball thrown to him. Why would you drop a guy who is looking to be one of the best on the team….
As long as he produces and doesn’t get into legal trouble, I wouldn’t even consider dropping him. No questions asked.

Wayne Weaver

Do you think Mr. Weaver would make Coach keep Matt Jones on the team this year concidering coach already cut a previous first round bust(Leftwich) last year?

by Kenzster on Aug 29, 2008 7:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No

Look how it turned out for the Jags, it was a terrific call. Matt Jones is staying because he is doing teriffic. If he were doing horrible, we would have cut him by now, he wouldn’t be worth the trouble.

Trade?

Since they kept kept Matt instead of cutting him maybe it means they hope to trade him as soon as Jerry Porter comes back.

by Kenzster on Sep 1, 2008 2:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Do you still want him?

What will it take for everybody to figure out that we really need to move on and ditch the Matt Jones experiment and get a real reciever more time with the first team.Matt Jones just doesn’t look or play like any other wide reciever in the NFL.To me it doesn’t look like it comes natural for him. I think Dennis Northcut is a better playmaker than Matt Jones and Northcut should replace Jones. Walker should get more playing time too.Doesn’t any other team out there need Matt Jones more than the Jags?
