Quinn Gray looks good

Just watching the HoF game and thinking that Quinn Gray looks really good.  So did Sorgi.  I know it's against 2nd string defenses, 3rd string defenses, and on top of that, the REDSKINS, but they're moving down the field pretty easily.  I think he deserves a chance to be atleast the backup somewhere, not the 3rd qb.  Wish he woulda just stayed in Jax.  Did he want too much money?  Or were the Jags not satisfied with him as a backup?  What happened there?

i think he couldn’t stand knowing he would, probably, never be the top QB in Jaguar land… I don’t think it was a money issue because he would’ve been a fairly “cheap” backup, imo… I also wish he was still a Jaguar…. I don’t know why he would go to the Colts, since there’s pretty much no chance he’ll be a starter… Oh well… We work with what we have and push on thru to the top of the AFC South! Flippin’ Sweet!

He was delusional

just like Bobby McCray. He thought he was more than what he was. Plus he had no real desire to work hard. When he stepped in on Monday night against the Colts, he was not ready and was horrible. I am convinced that night cost him his job here in Jacksonville. I don’t care he won 2/3 as a starter. The team won those games, not Quinn.

you are right...

How many hand offs in the beginning of that Tampa game? FT and MJD won that one. Still, Quinn is a very solid backup.

Starter?

Quinn Gray should consider the CFL. He could probably battle for a starting job in that league.

His performance last night was a combination of luck and playing against poor competition. Remember nothing that happens in the pre-season is indicative of reality. Sorgi would not go 7 for 10, Quinn would have been sacked at least a handful of times…but Lorenzen probably would have still thrown that Pick 6.

I wonder if a Leftwich v Gray CFL game will ever happen. Hmmm….

Unfortunately, the truth only comes out game-by-game.

preseason play...

I agree that it was against lesser competition. But if you remember it was during training camp and preseason that Garrard earned his spot as the teams top guy. I know that the gap between Gray and Garrard is big, but maybe if he plays consistantly well he can secure a #2 or #3 spot on the team. I do wish him luck as a former Jaguar. He did OK for us while he was here. He did a great job of handing off the football during that Tampa game last year.

Colt Brennan

Forget Gray, they used to call him Mr. August in Jacksonville for a reason. However, I was really impressed by the kid from Hawaii last night.

Grey and Brennan

I think Quinn Gray was the second best QB we saw last night, Colt Brennan being the first.
Wasn’t he undrafted last year after setting the NCAA passing yards record? He looked like a young Brett Favre, a real gunslinger. I read on one of the Colts fan sites that quite a few people would like to see Gray replace Sorgi. Sorgi has for years made Colts fans nervous. I hope some non-AFC South team grabs Gray for a starter. He deserves a chance somewhere.

Brennan.

Brennan was the star of last night’s game. He displayed great downfield vision and put passes right on the money. Although Gray completed a few nice balls, it seemed his receivers were making the passes look good by coming back to the ball and catching in traffic.

Unfortunately, the truth only comes out game-by-game.

They were catching?

Looked like Roby dropped a beauty to me. There is no need to rag on Quinn. Did you also rag on David when he was scoring more points for the Titans than us in a 500 plus yard night when he was in for Leftwich? ‘Cause, he looked atrocious! Yet he found a way to play his best last year. Give Quinn a break. Only in Jacksonville are players former and current stepped on so hard.

ok :( I'm sorry Quinn

:) I do hope he makes it but I saw what I saw. He needed a major attitude adjustment. The Free Agency market wasn’t that kind to him either. Maybe he learned something and can now let his talent come out. Maybe he can make it. It would be a nice story if he does, but it won’t make the Jaguars stupid for letting him go.

No, you're right

about that. It’s just strange that we send him away, saying he was too high paid for a backup. Yet we signed Lemon for more and the dude threw two passes backwards last year. (no joke.)

Gray

I just got back from Colts camp, and of all the QBs in camp, Gray impressed me the most. He has a great arm and puts good zip on the ball. He has good mobility, but does not do the Vince Young and look to run every down. His one issue is accuracy, but even that has improved throughout camp. Unlike Sorgi in the HoF game, Gray actually looked to throw the ball to the WRs.

Glad to see Jags fans saw what many of us Colts fans saw.

Also, two questions: How does your pass rush look, and who is playing WR with Porter and Williams hurt? Thanks all.

good comments....

Question 1: Quentin is looking much more promising than I had hoped, and I hoped alot. On jaguars.com theres a video of Jack Del Rio saying how Q. was disrupting everything in the scrimmage. And Hayward is looking like before the injury.

Question 2: Williamson has really stepped up and took the ball running, literally. He has made some outstanding catches, even some diving ones between defenders. And Walker is coming on strong.

By the way, in the HOF game #92 for y’all was in the backfield all night. Who is that? He is looking awesome.

92

92 is Mr. Marcus Howard, who played LBer and DE at Georgia. You might remember him as the guy who crushed Colt Brennan in the bowl game this past year. Howard is a Robert Mathis clone: Undersized, but very fast. He’s timed faster than Freeney. One of the reasons Indy exited the playoffs last year was the same reason you guys did: No pass rush.

When Freeney and Mathis got hurt, the Colts couldn’t pressure anyone. No defense in the modern NFL works without pressure on the QB. So, Indy drafted Howard and signed another rookie named Curtis Johnson. Both have looked impressive in camp, and both got sacks Sunday night.

I know Harvey isn’t in camp, but how is Groves looking?

I couldn't be happier...

with Quentin. I was expecting him to take a while to develop, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Jack Del Rio was bragging on him for being so disruptive in the scrimmage. I have been attending practice and he is really surprising everyone. If he can do that during the season, we will have alot to be happy about aroung here.
Here, you can see for yourself. The Jacksonville Jaguars Oklahoma drill is on Youtube and Jaguars.com too. He is #93.

WR is still open

Right now our passing game is Dennis Northcut, Mercedes Lewis and Maurice Jones Drew.

The Jaguars will be forced to keep 6 receivers. Expect that to be Jerry Porter, Reggie Williams, Dennis Northcut, Troy Williamson, Matt Jones, and Mike Walker.

On openning day, expect Matt Jones and Troy Williamson to start. Assuming Matt Jones isn’t in jail.

Reggie Wiliams should be back but his knee surgery will leave his leg muscles weakened for a few weeks, so expect him to play sparringly. Probably switching with Mike Walker.

I've been joking...

with a friend of mine who is a big Matt Jones fan. He keeps saying, ” Matt is going to have a break-out year.” Of course, my response is, ” Break out of jail, to make it to the games?”

But I really want to know, how is he going to get around his ’ prior commitments’ in Arkansas? Do you think he will get a sympathetic ’ good ol boy ’ judge and end up with community service? And if so will that have to be done in Arkansas?

I don't honestly know

It is impossible for me to predict the law and how things are handled. Marshawn Lynch runs down a woman in Buffalo and he gets… nothing. There are just too many examples of players not getting anything for serious offenses. For all I know Matt Jones is a God in Arkansas, or he gets the book thrown at him.

I do think for the time being his head is in football. August 11 is his hearing. We will kow more before the Miami pre-season game.

BTW… have we disagreed on anything anywhere? We seem to have the same opinion.

yeah, we do....

we haven’t disagreed much, but then again we are two of the most vehement individuals on this site when it comes to defending our Jaguars or our point. The good thing is we also share open minds. If I’m wrong I know you or someone else on this site will throw out a correction. I need it. I don’t want to be right, I want to be informed.

The Quin Gray saga

I wonder about the Quinn Gray saga. He wanted to leave Jacksonville for an opportunity at a starting job. Understandable, did well in Europe, looked good in preseason, nice fill-in for Garrard last year. If you don’t want to credit him with the wins don’t blame him for the New Orleans lose. I thought he looked pretty good. And for Gods sake the Colts tasted blood when we lost David.
So what happened? I thought the perfect connection for Grays advance was the Vikings. A similar Leftwich / Garrard situation . Jackson, a young starter QB making progressions. A young back-up, with potential, on his heals. As with so many clubs if your starter quits making the progressions or starts getting injuries, see what #2 QB can do. The perfect opportunity for Gray and the Vikings, right.
So, what happened? There is certainly a Jaguars/Vikings connection, right. After all, they’re the NFC and Mike Tice possibly has influenced the acquisition of a player or two to the Jags. So why not Gray to the Vikings?
Rumor control and the conspiracy theory guys tell a story of Gray being locker room poison. Unlike Garrard, who accepted his role as back-up, worked hard to be the best he could be and take his opportunity when he could, Gray badmouthed the other quarterbacks and tried to get the other players on his side about being the better option at QB. Maybe that’s the Mike Tice connection. He might have steered Minnesota away. This guy could split your locker room when you need the players behind your struggling quarterback.
Lemons accepts the back-up role. That is important to the starting QB to concentrate on doing things right and not worry about making a mistake as they all do. Maybe that’s why Gray got no offers from several teams. I thought he would fit well in. Green Bay, Washington, or Oakland. He takes a job in Houston with two upstart QB’s and nothing to offer but desire or desperation and a Jaguars playbook. Doesn’t make the team there and now goes to the Jags arch rival "the Colts". The option for #1 is real slim but with hard work and the Jaguars playbook doled out in smaller portions, he might make a contested #2.
Say this isn’t so for the Jags #3 I loved to watch so much in the preseason. The guy I hoped blossomed into the QB that would end the Leftwich / Garrard wars and lead us into the next level of competition. Tell me the rumor control and conspiracy guys are full of it and this crap was born and bred in the blogs

Thank you for the post

Just some thoughts on conspiracy theory…
There is a shortage of good starting quarterbacks and a shortage of good backup quarterbacks. It is so rare to find a good quarterback that when a team does, it will pay almost twice as much for that position as any other. Even the backup will make more money than 75% of the rest of the team.

So a shortage of good inexpensive quarterbacks should make every team look at Quinn Grey. It shouldn’t matter what anyone wispers about him, the price is right if the talent is there. Why doesn’t he get a wealth of offers? There is not a lot of tape on him and the tape that does exist wasn’t that good. What you see on tape is 1) a bad Indy game, for whatever reason, 2) a Tampa game where the team covered up for him, 3) Some decent moments in NO and another game.

In short, teams see this, a third string quarterback who didn’t impress the Jaguars enough to develop or keep him, another AFC South team who cut him for being out of shape, not enough tape to make a decision. There is no evidence that anyone should jump on a Quinn Grey opportunity.

The best chance he ever got was with Indy in this pre-season. In his whole career, this was his best chance to flash. If Indy doesn’t keep him, I can’t see who else would jump.

I don’t think talent can be surpressed and I don’t think anyone would try to use rumors to supress talent. The need is too great at the position for it to work. Anyone with ability gets a chance to shine. Quinn Grey just hasn’t showed anything worth looking at. I think that is all there is to it.
