LEFTWICH LANDING IN THE ‘BURGH?

LEFTWICH LANDING IN THE ‘BURGH?

Posted by Mike Florio on August 9, 2008, 9:42 a.m.

A day after one former Marshall quarterback got out of the dumpster and found a job in Miami, another former Marshall signal-caller could be in business as well.

With Steelers backup Charlie Batch expected to miss four-to-six weeks with a broken collarbone, free-agent quarterback Byron Leftwich is expected to arrive in Pittsburgh on Saturday for a workout and, possibly, a contract.

Leftwich was a top-ten pick in the 2003 draft, but was cut by Jacksonville in late August of last year, after spending the entire offseason, training camp, and preseason as the Jags’ starter.  He landed in Atlanta, but lasted only for the remainder of the year.

Leftwich recently got a tire-kicking from the Titans, but otherwise has drawn little interest.

The knock on him is a lack of mobility (to put it mildly) and a catalpult-style windup and release that gives opposing defenses way too much time to react.

can you imagine...

what the Jaguars would do to Byron with their terrible offensive line? It would be hard to watch.

Personally,

I feel horrible for the way this town treated Byron. During his time here, the Jags O-line sucked, yet he was blamed for the losses. In the playoff game against the Pats, Leftwich had a higher passing % than Tom Brady and lead us in rushing in the game, even with our backs being 10th in rushing on the season. And even when Jimmy Smith dropped the first two passes of the game that hit him in both hands, Byron got the blame. Shame on the fans of Jacksonville.

Good luck to you Byron,..... I wish you only the best.

I don't care who the Steelers have at QB

I cheer when they sack him. If it is Byron, so be it. If it was Brett Farve, so be it. When they go down, I feel good about our defensive line. Nothing against Byron.

that's cool....

we are agreed on the sack thing. I hope that even with us holding back defensive looks, ‘Q’ and the boys will feast on the Falcons.

As a transplanted Browns fan

I still fondly rmember Turkey Joe Jones, if that gives you any idea on how I feel about Steeler quarterbacks. I feel right at home here in Jacksonville with a Steeler rivalry really beginning to boil.

It must be tough...

living here in Jacksonville considering how many Steeler fans live here. Hell, even a couple of the talk radio guys here in town, who cover the Jags daily, are Steeler fans.

Personally????

Jagsrock can’t believe how Leftwich was treated??? Give me a break! Here’s how Leftwich was treated: a new coaching regime comes in and selects him with a 1st round pick-eventually paying him 1st round money. Leftwich proceeds to hold out all through training camp, only to appear in last preseason game. Despite the holdout, he is annointed the starter and Mark Brunell gets kicked to the curb-not to mention David Garrard is no longer the heir apparant to Brunell. After numerous injuries and poor play Jack still remains loyal and declares him still the starter. Leftwich blows off Del Rio’s loyalty and balsts Jack in the media. On one occasion, Leftwich threw his shoulder pads down when Jack told him he was holding him out due to injury.
Leftwich’s sense of entitlement was unbelievable. His disrespect to the coaching staff and some teammates was unforgiveable. He was never a leader-and many players preferred Garrard very early on. Our O-line took way too much heat. Leftwich held the ball too long and had a horrible delivery. He’d make any line look bad. I’ve had season tix since year one, and I couldn’t stomach Leftwich or how Garrard and Brunell were treated. I had a Garrard jersey custom made in 2005, and got plenty of angry comments when I wore it to the stadium. We are all lucky David is a class act and remained patient throughout this whole mess. Most QBs would have aqsked for a trade-and David was in high demand. Gruden really wanted him. But we did get lucky, and David Garrard is going to be great. I’ll enjoy it and you will too. But please spare me the poor, poor Byron posts. He’s lucky he ever made a dime in the NFL.

Whatever dude,...

The reason I became a Jaguar fan is because they NEEDED good fans who cheered and stuck around when the team sucks. This town has a college mentality….. GO GATORS…. and doesn’t know how to stick with a team or a player when they struggle. But, go ahead, follow Leftwich around for the rest of his and your life, throwing punches. Regardless of your opinion, you are still a hater, just like most football fans in this town.

In fact......

I’ll leave, and let you impart great wisdom. I’m sure I can find good football talk anywhere else.

Calm down

Leftwich is the past of the Jags, and now Garrard is in. While Leftwhich was a huge letdown, and was not a fan favorite, we (the fans) put to much blame on him. Hopefully he can make a good backup somewhere. I know he can, and thats what he should be, a solid backup.

well....bye

Typical. You state your case with solid facts and you’re “a hater.” But you’re right. You were a fan when they “needed fans.” Like I said, I’m a permanent season tix holder…since day 1. I don’t hate anybody—I just know Leftwich is a shmuck, and always will be. GO JAGS!

its official

Byron signed a one year minimum contract to be a Steeler. Best of luck to Byron, except IF he plays the Jags.

I'm with you...

congrats Byron. Better hope ’ Big Ben ’ stays healthy until after the Jag game. I’ve heard that the Jaguar defense is ferocious. (Heh, heh, heh)

Byron

We can all agree that Byron didn’t live up to his potential, and was a sack waiting to happen. Before Garrard had his breakout year, I may have said that it was offensive lines fault, but its clear hes not at NFL starter caliber. Jagsrock, I have to disagree with you on this one. Garrard is the rightful starter, and Byron isn’t a top 10 QB. Jags fans have a right to be slightly ticked at him.
But wherever Leftwhich may be, I hope he does good for himself. Cause he ain’t a bad guy.

Our QB situation wasn’t the best while Byron was here. Remember, Garrard was very inconsistent until last year, looking brilliant at times and then making Pacman Jones his favorite target. Either way, I was never a fan of Leftwich but thats in the past now.
