Ask BigBlueShoe, Colts blogger (Week 3)
Hiya kitty fans! Yes, yes, yes, I know. You hate me and my team. I accept that. The good news for you is this weekend you can hate on us a little more as your Jags invade The Lube in a must win game against the Colts. Like your spotted kitties, my Colts are banged up and battered, especially on the offensive line.
I'm here to answer any and lal of your questiosn about the Colts. Who is hurt? Who is playing well? Who is sucking hard donkey balls? Who will replace Bob Sanders for 6 weeks? Etc.
Despite the utter desperation we will likely see from both teams, the game itself should be a great one. It might be the marqee match-up for Week 3. Ask away, Jags fans.

Dear Big Blue Shoe...
What are some things about your new stadium that you like/dislike? BTW, the Jaguars will be re-naming the stadium from Luke Ass Oil to “The Jacksonville Glue Factory!” Think about it. Just kidding BBS, we do appriciate you coming over here to answer questions. Great sportsmanship. That’s what I like to see! Oh, also, do you read “Ask Vic” on jaguars.com? If so, what do you think?

I actually haven’t been to Lucas yet, but from people I know and trust they say it is truly beautiful. It will look even better when they take down the Hoosier Dome and, through the sun window, you will see the Indy skyline. The one issue the media brings up is the lack of noise, but people I know who attended games said Lucas is very, very loud even with the roof open.
As for Vic Ketchman, here is one of my old reviews of his work at Jaguars.com. ;)

Howdy Shoe…. How much gas do you feel is left in Peyton’s tank? What position would you hope is drafted in the first two rounds next year? Thanks for stopping by.

Answer
Peyton’s tank? He’s still the best QB in football, and he’s still only 32. Montana played until 38. Favre is 39. Peyton has never had a serious injury, and does a good job avoiding hits. He’ll still be the man for a while.
For the draft, DT. The DT position has been a nightmare for the Colts. It went from the deepest position to the tea’s weakest in less than two months. Quinn Pitcock quit. Ed Johnson got high. Corey Simon got fat. Montae Reagor got in a car accident. Endless hijinks at DT.

what's the deal with cutting your DT?
Can you pass some info over about the specifics regarding the Colts cutting him? I heard the PA is looking into the legality of that move and how are the fans taking it? Thanks bro good luck Sunday, your going to need it!
by keef on Sep 18, 2008 9:59 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Answer
They cut him because they told him when they signed him that his troubled history at Penn State was a big concern of theirs. Joe Paterno vouched personally for Big Ed, and the Colts gave him a chance on the condition of zero tolerance. Screw up once, and you are gone. Contrary to what ambulance-chasing idiot lawyers like Mike Florio suggest, there is nothing wrong, illegal, or against the PA in what the Colts did. Big Ed screwed up off the field, and they cut him. The Colts are very up front about their no-jackholes policy. If you have a prior history, they will not be lenient on you, no matter how important you are to the team. Big Ed was the best DT this team had, but it says something to the team’s integrity that they would cut a player like that. The have rules. Rules must be followed. If you don’t follow them, you’re gone.
No exceptions.
The fact that Big Ed has yet to sign with another team should say something. This would be a better league if more teams ran their shops that way. JMO.

Not a question but a comment on your last answer...
I already had a tremendous amount of respect for Tony Dungy, but after they cut Ed Johnson, my respect factor soared over the top. I like to see teams take a no tolerance policy on player mis conduct. Good for Dungy and Polin for taking no crap. That being said, I think the Jaguars lockeroom would be pretty empty if they followed a similar process.

I’m not so sure. They have some great character people on your Jags team. Don’t get me wrong. I personally feel the Jags have their share of punks (one being their coach), but guys like Jones-Drew and Garrard are great vets and seem like great people.

There's an incident from Jack's playing days...
That he’s probably referring to. Let’s just say that Del Rio didn’t really like when the owners brought in “scab” players in 1987.
You can read the Times-Union’s take on it here.

Well, sort of
Chris knows this about me, but I am not a fan of Jack Del Rio. This is nothing against Jags fans or the city of Jacksonville or anything like that. I personally feel this team has had some decent success despite Del Rio, not because of him. I’ll cite some incidents and some observations:
- The David Garrard switch was, in my mind, a no brainer. Chris knows my long standing opinion on Byron Leftwich. He sucked. He always sucked. He was never good. It was a mistake to draft him in the first place because David Garrard was always better. So, making the move to Garrard prior to 2007 was no “brave” or ballsy" or anything like that. It was an OBVIOUS football decision. Leftwich was an over-hyped turd who was lazy, fat, and couldn’t throw an accurate football to save his life. The fact that is took Del Rio that long to figure out what we Colts fans knew since 2003 speaks to his football intelligence.
- In the 2005 regular season game between the Colts and Jags in Jacksonville, the Colts were 13-0 at the time, but the Jags were 11-2 (I think) and still within striking distance of the AFC South. Indy converts a controversial 3rd down. Del Rio, acting immature in them moment, takes a red flag out of his pocket and throws it on the field. He then said some kind of inappropriate remark to an official. Official throws a flag. Unsportsmanlike content… on the coach. regardless of what replay shows, it is first down Colts. Indy scored a TD on that drive. Ball game. Colts win AFC South. Del Rio should have been fired after the game. No professional football coach should ever cost his team a win by acting like a jackass on the sideline.
- The “scab” incident Chris links to above is rather troubling.
- For whatever reason, Del Rio does an excessive amount of whining. It is very rare that he ever compliments the Colts, even when the Colts blow his team out. Indy, on the other hand, always compliments the Jags, even though they have beaten them rather consistently. Not to be in your face about it, but the Colts have always dominated the Jaguars franchise. Yet, despite that domination, Colts players and coaches praise Jacksonville for their toughness and tenacity. Very rarely is the compliment returned. Part of that is Del Rio, who is an ass.
Again, these are my own personal observations of Del Rio. I might be wrong about his character, but I don’t think I am.

Random questions
First off, thanks for taking the time to do this!
As a Colts fan, what do you think the Jags’ biggest fault is (i.e. where do you guys attack us)? What, if anything, about the Jags worries you going into this game? Lastly, a series of very teal-shaded questions: what do you think of Harvey and Groves? Are they anything that Peyton is losing sleep over? Are they being game-played for, or are they non-entities at this point in time?
by KeithG on Sep 18, 2008 3:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Answer
Biggest fault? Poise and maturity. The Colts often take huge advantage of Jaguars mistakes (turnover, penalties, and sloppy play). the Jags do have some mature players, but most of the time the Colts are able to eek out wins because they play the right way while the Jags make mistake after mistake.
What worries me about the Jags? Some guy named Jones-Drew. He’s kinda good, you know. ;)
Harvey and Groves? Don’t know. We will see. the Jags needed to get pass rushers. We’ll see if they can do the job.
Do they scare Peyton? No, but that doesn’t mean anything. They haven’t done anything yet.
Game planned for? Don’t think so, but again that doesn’t mean anything. These kids are rookies and it is only Week 2. Give them time.

JDR...
I’m not trying to defend violent behavior, but I read the article from above and all I got out of it was that JDR got into a fight. Oh my, a football player getting into a fight? I know it was with a former player, but that makes it of even less importance. If this happended to a Canadian player, it may not have even made the news in the U.S. Not enough for me to brand Del Rio as a “jerk.” He is just what I had always thought, a firey, emotional human being who is very passionate about everything that he does. He’s a true competitor. Nothing more, nothing less. He also seems to be a great father. I was listening to the JDR show earlier this week and he was doing the show from his cell phone so that he wouldn’t disappoint the fans and so he could watch his son play Middle School football at the same time. Great character in my opionion.

Peyton and big games
While you talk about the Colts being more mature and poised than the Jags(Something I sadly concede), what about Peyton in big games. I would chalk up the AFC championship win over NE more to a Patriot collapse than a great comeback. With Peyton’s track record, 0-4 vs UF and getting blown out by Nebraska in college, and usually turning in numbers worthy of Ryan Leaf in the playoffs do you think the Super Bowl win was him getting over the hump or a lucky break?
-John
by FSBlueApocalypse on Sep 18, 2008 4:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Answer
Seriously, this is a joke, right? Are you actually pulling out the old, dumb “Peyton can’t win big games” thing? Last week’s game at Minnesota was his 31st fourth quarter comeback win. Joe Montana had 31 in his entire career, and he retired at 38. Peyton’s 32.
No one gives a crap about Peyton’s college career anymore. Vince Young was a stud in college and sucks in the pros. What you did in college means dick in this league. Ask Eric Crouch, Tommie Frazier, and Chris Weineke.
And if winning a Super Bowl (and getting MVP of the game) is not enough to convince toy that the “big game” knock was garbage, then there’s no point in talking further about it. You’ll never be concinced, and that’s sad.

Peyton is the Devil...
I called that Super Bowl Win Easily and remember saying to the crowd gathered at my house, “the colts are going to win, because Peyton is not going to let his team lose!” I had never seen such determination in one player’s performance.
He is one of the best, sorry to say.

I guess I missed that game!
The game I saw looked as if Dominic Rhodes and the Defense had more determination and won the game inspite of not because of Peyton Manning. Furthermore, Dominic Rhodes had a better perfromance than Manning, but it’s kind of hard to market a non entity when you have the proverbial poster boy. Don’t think I’m drinking the “haterade”, because I’m not. P. Manning is an excellent quarterback, and has consistently been one of the best if not the best in the NFL now for the past 5 years. I just don’t think he was the MVP of the game, and the defense was dominant.

Also
Consider Peyton had very good passing numbers despite playing in a monsoon. The rain made the ball very slick (not just for Rex Grossman). Yet, after the first series, Peyton carved up the Bears secondary. And many of Dom’s runs were audibles made by Peyton himself.

However!
With Tom Moore calling the concepts and Manning calling the play for that concept hardly comes to the level of an audible. I say this because Tom never calls a play. So, to say PM is calling an audible is incorrect. Again, PM is great at what he does, but in my personal opinion without Dom, the drives stall because as you said they played in a “monsoon”. Maybe I’m wayoff, but that’s how I see it. Just like I think you’re way off on JDR it’s your opinion that’s all it is. Thanks for your time.

Don’t take it as that. Peyton always makes it a point to shake hands after every game. He also text messages players when they get hurt, especially QBs. He always treats people with respect, even those that don’t often deserve it. I’ve never heard him say anything negative about the Jags. Even when they have publically called him and his team “soft,” I’ve never heard him say anything other than kind words for Jaguars.

Jim Irsay is the polar opposite of his father, Bob. Jim is very involved with the players, coaches, and management. He cares very deeply for the team and the community. I have met Jim several times at various functions, and he is one of these people that will treat you as if you were his best friend. Before I got to know him, I was working at Starbucks in high school on northside Indy. This is back in 1995, and Jim used to come in and order coffee from me all the time. We’d always talk about the team, and back then his father was ailing and he was beginning his transition into fully and completely owning the team. We talked about Jim Harbaugh, the defense, etc. He loves his club and the fans. Real classy, stadn-up owner.
Dungy’s replacement was named this past off-season. QB coach and assistant head coach Jim Caldwell was promoted to Associate Head Coach. He will succeed Dungy.
Places to go: St. Elmo’s is a good Steak House (Peyton goes there). Alcatraz has its own microbrew. If you are looking for a great place to have breakfast, I suggest Le Peep downtown (not a French place, but serves great omelets, pancakes, etc.). The Conrad hotel downtown has a great restaurant and bar. Whenever fancy events happen, all the big wigs stay there. Another good bar is Nicky Blaine’s, off Meridian (still downtown, just south of Monument Circle). If you are looking for good seafood downtown (because, you know, Indy is soooooo close to the ocean, hehe) a good place is McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant.
If you are looking for more great bars, or places that serve good food and beer, I suggest this site: http://www.hoosierbeergeek.blogspot.com/ They are great and know their shit.
Hope that helps you.

Thanks for joining us over here in kitty land, and answering our questions. I have a couple questions for you since you sound like you really know your stuff. First off I like to know your opinion of Melvin Bullitt, Bob Sanders replacement. I watched a game last year where he made 15 recorded tackles and looked like Sanders had put on a jersey with a different number with Bullitt"s name on it. Is Bullitt the real deal? Next I like to know how in the world do the Colts always seem to no matter who leaves always find a guy who steps in and plays well. No matter what LB they lose another steps in, or O-lineman like Charlie Johnson stepping in for Ugoh last year, they never seem to miss a beat. Lastly from your perspective if you were the GM of the Jags, what would you do personnel wise to get the Jags a ring realistically. I am talking about from this point forward not in hindsight. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.
by NASF on Sep 19, 2008 10:42 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Answer
Bullitt is a good kid; a solid safety who can get the job done. He’s not a difference maker like Bob, but he’s good.
They find guys like Bullitt because Bill Polian and his scouting team are the best in football. That is no secret. The Colts sport the best scouting department, and they work very closely with the coaches. On many teams, the scouts and coaches will be at odds over players. A coach likes a kid because he is tall, while the scout likes another because he runs a 4.5. In Indy, the scouts know what the coaches like and need, and they find the kid.
Now, if I were the Jags GM, you should pray. ;)
Seriously, I think the Jags have done a good job developing their team. To get to the next level, the first thing I’d do is fire Del Rio. He is an incompetent coach whose immaturity costs his team wins. That cannot be tolerated. I’d take a bunch of the owner’s money and throw it at Bill Cowher. Get a coach like that to work with the Jags roster, and watch out. The Jags also need to develop some better TE and WR play. This would be no quick fix, but find WRs that work hard and run great routes. Don’t look for big guys, or “fast” guys. Look for receivers: Guys who #1 catch the ball whenever it is thrown near them, and run the route correctly.
Also, with the focus of this team on its defense, the Jags could switch to a 3-4 and have a lot of success. I’m not big on the 3-4, but that scheme (or a 4-3 blitz scheme like in Philly) could really work in Jacksonville. The Jags would need to get better safety play to run those schemes though, but you can find a good, high quality safety in the draft. Just my opinion.

Del Rio
You constantly mention Del Rio’s immaturity, but the examples you provide all date back to 3 or 4 seasons ago and you forget to take into account that this was his first head coaching job. I really think those concerns have dissipated in the past few seasons so you’re critique is outdated.
As far as a 3-4 defense, the Jaguars roster is really not built for this defense. Our linebackers are too small to play in the 3-4 and we don’t have a legitimate nose tackle. Henderson is a pillar of this franchise and he is a classic defensive tackle.

At 6’7, 335 pounds, you don’t think he can play nose tackle?

Definitely not!
They actually tried it against SD a couple years ago with Stroud @ Spicer playing end and SD had a field day.
Look at most true nose tackles and they’re usually squat guys, 6’4" or less, that are tough to get under and move out of the way.

You forgot
Your forgot Pittsburgh, who might not have a better overall record because of one bad year in 2006, but they won the Super Bowl in 2005. In addition, teams like Chicago, Green Bay, the Giants, and Philly have had very strong seasons the last 3 years that resulted in more playoff success than the Jags. and while teams like the Titans and Bucs have not had as good records as the Jags the last three year, most agree their head coaches are better than Del Rio.

Your still wrong
Del Rio inherited a terrible football team and has had them in the playoffs 2 of the last 3 seasons. And last year they won on the road in PIT and lost to the best team in the AFC.
Let’s look at those other teams…
The Packers – in ’05 and ’06 they were 4-12, 8-8 and last year they had the same success as the Jags. One playoff win, one loss to a Super Bowl team.
The Cowboys were 9-7 in ’05 and ’06 – no playoff wins the past 3 years.
The Titans – 4-12, 8-8, 10-6… no playoff wins.
The Bucs – 11-5, 4-12, 9-7… no playoff wins.
Yes, the Steelers won the Super Bowl in 2005 but since then 8-8, 10-6. And they haven’t beaten the Jaguars in 4 straight games, including last years playoffs and their Super Bowl year.
And just because Jeff Fisher is a good coach, doesn’t make Del Rio a bad coach.
