Game Notes Defense
Again I like to mention that I can't comment on the first five minutes of the game, because of CBS showing the OT game between the Giants and Bungles. Defensively I am seeing a lot of improvement, especially in the area of rushing the passer. The Jags put a lot of pressure on Manning forcing bad throws, and interceptions. Unlike Vic Ketchman who believes Manning is in decline because of a few bad throws especially the one overthrown to Marvin Harrison, I totally disagree. On that throw to Harrison, Manning was forced out of the pocket, and had to throw the ball running up the field. I am amazed that he put the ball where he did which was just out of the reach of Harrison by inches. Anytime you are running forward with 300lbs guys chasing you from behind, and you have to put it just right with a guy running full speed straight down the field with a defender almost stride for stride. You are going to put just a little bit more velocity on the throw. I am not sure what game Vic was watching but I saw some perfectly placed throws to clark , Wayne, and in that last drive an incredible throw to Gonzalez . I am mentioning all this because I don't believe the Jags defense was bad but rather that Manning and his WR core is just that good. The difference in this game then in previous is that the Jags D was able to put a lot of pressure on Manning. There were some very well timed blitzes that forced bad throws, and one by Darayl Smith which resulted in a sack. I think as the D gets more and more comfortable with Gregg Williams scheme, the sacks will start piling up.
I watched everyone on the D-line, and one guy really stood out. Dereck Landry is just so quick at shooting the gap, that he continually disrupted plays. The whole line had a good day, except for a few plays. The plays where Addai ran in the middle of the Jags D for gains was due to the outstanding play of the Colts center, Jeff Saturday. The Randy Cross the announcer for the game called him out a couple times for his outstanding play. Saturday isn't a perennial pro bowler for nothing.
The LB unit played well except against the patent stretch play. I think they really missed Durant's speed because that play requires a very fast LB to defend it. Smith had the best game of the LB's, chasing down RB's, and blitzing Manning causing a sack.
The secondary had its moments facing a very talented receiving core. Much of the game was played in the nickel, and overall did a good job. The one knock is Mathis just can't seem to cover Harrison. Harrison must really know how to exploit Mathis, because he makes Mathis look bad every time they face each other. Lets keep in mind that the rules favor the offense, and its very hard to cover any WR one on one, and shut them down completely.
The big difference in this years coverage is that under Gregg Williams they played a lot of man coverage. No more exploiting the soft spots time after time in zone coverage. Manning is so good at finding those areas and making it look all too easy. The secondary manned up, and played well.
Now everybody just seems to remember that last drive where Manning marched all the way down the field, slicing and dicing the D, and scoring the go ahead TD. At that point in the game the secondary lost two valuable players to injuries in Nelson and Starks. Nelson was having a fantastic game defending the run and pass, so losing him was costly. On that last drive Manning threw a laser to Gonzalez who made an incredible leaping grab with Florence tight in coverage. Florence had him covered it was just an incredible pass and catch. Next they picked on William James who was in the game covering Harrison due to injuries. Then the Colts lined up Harrison and Wayne side by side to the left, and crisscrossed each other causing Mathis and I think Williams to bump into each other. Manning had thrown the ball before Wayne was even open, knowing full well what was going to happen before the play even began. It was just a very well executed drive that Manning has done a million times before.
The obvious glaring weakness of this team is the passing game. Not being able to score points in the red zone due to not having any balance on offense, where defenses can load up the box to stop the run, and not having a WR good enough to exploit it. Garrard as well needs to stop locking on to one target which is either the backs or Matt Jones. This team is good enough in all other areas to be a very good team, but unless the Jags find a receiver that can stretch the field, and start putting up points. I just don't see this team as being anything but average.
The Jags in my opinion won't be able to win against the Texans just running the ball. The Texans are a lot better at stopping the run, and are weak defending the pass. Like the Colts were the perfect team to get the running game going, the Texans are the perfect team to get the passing game going.

Is Mike P developing D.D.S (Donovan Darius Syndrome)?
I have a theory that Mike Peterson is developing Donovan Darius Syndrome. He’s missed to many years due to injury, and his age just won’t let him come back.
He’s a shadow of his fromer self. His instinct is gone and he seems to be reacting at a slower pace. I’ve seen him out of position on plays more than a couple times, which is inexcusable for a veteran. IS he struggling to get the defensive playbook and missing responsibilities, or is it losing a step and missing so many games you mentally forget the speed me. ala’ Dononvan Darius?
-Collin
I think it is his age and injuries.
He has missed so much time and that can really hurt an older player more than the younger ones. If he wants the new contract next year he had better fix the problem or else. The Jags already have three LB’s they like so replacing him wont be hard.
and he is expensive.
Mike Peterson is one of the higher paid players. He and Reggie Heyward are up there.
I always respect your opinion
Thank you for the deeper analysis. I keep hanging on every sentence to see how you thought Derrick Harvey and Quentit Groves did. I know Derrick laid Peyton out once and when there was no call, Peyton began getting a small case of the nerves. Hey, knee surgery is not a simple procedure to recover from when these guys are on you.
Grooves and Harvey
What I noticed that was interesting is that the Jags like to continually rotate the ends, and they even play them at both end spots. I thought they would keep Grooves lined up on the weak side only, and Harvey on the other side.
When watching Harvey what stood out was the speed he has getting around the end in pursuit of the QB. If Harvey can learn better technique coupled with his speed and power, he will be a force.
Grooves is mainly just a pass rusher, and like Harvey needs to incorporate some pass rush moves in order to get to the QB on a consistent basis. The Jags have him lining up at different spots, to get a better angle or spot to get to the QB.
I believe in time like most rookie ends, these two will blossom into players that will pressure the QB. It just takes time for DE’s, unlike RB’s that can make an impact right away.
Mike Peterson
I agree totally with you Collin. I have been seeing the same thing, but have held off mentioning it. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, and allow more time before I passed judgment. I am not sure if it is due to the new scheme or if he has lost a step. It also might be some resentment towards not getting a new contract. Whatever the reason, Mike is not playing up to the level he was playing at before the injury last year.
Now Wait a miniute!
I can accept the possibility of him losing a step, and the notion of not being comfortable with the scheme. However, I find it worrisome that you could say that he could be doing it due to resentment of not getting a new contract. I believe that MP understands that he needs to perform. He’s gone on record as having said so. If it were due to resentment it implies that he’s performing in such a manner that he doesn’t care if he gets a new one or not at this point. I simply don’t believe that is the case. Maybe, I read your comment wrong. I’m hoping that it’s the scheme issue ,and if not then as JagSoilder stated, we already have LB’s that could come in and do the job
His focus may not be entirely there, that's all NASF is sayin.
If you’re sweating a contract extension, you may be playing to ensure you don’t get hurt yet again, or maybe you’re mind is just preoccupied. Whatever the reason, his play hasn’t been the same.
-Collin
Agreed.
However, I think that we can agree that MP has handled this professionally, and that would include putting those things aside. It’s not going to do him any good to stew about it. I say this because he is not only playing for a new contract with the Jags, but for any team should the Jags not sign him.
What?
“The Texans are a lot better at stopping the run, and are weak defending the pass”
You do realize that they are currently ranked 5th in the league in pass defense, and 27th against the run, right? They are giving up 170+ yards per game. I realize its early in the season, but I don’t think you can claim they are better at stopping the run.
If they only give up 170 yards...
… then they will be better than Indianapolis was. Does that count?
The point is...
They are horrible against the run. Indy is horrible against the run. 27th and 30th in the league respectively. Both those teams are actually good against the pass, 2nd and 5th. The Texans thus far have not shown any vulnerability in the passing game. Just run the ball.
If we are able to run,
which I believe we will, then that will make them bring more men in the box. Even the guy at BRB has said that the secondary is weak. I don’t think that the stats show it becauseI both Pitt and Tenn had a field day running the ball on them.
Yeah
Not to mention the fact the Texans have only been thrown against 39 times through all their games only because their run D has been so bad. Also don’t forget Big Ben went 13 of 14. That doesn’t really scream obvious good pass D. The QB’s facing the Texans also improved their yards per attempt while only throwing 1 pick on the season. Nothing in the past year indicates that they are a good pass D and they are without Dunta Robinson. Quinn Grey took them apart last year with backups playing.
As bad as the run D is their pass D is even worse, randjamal.
About Peyton
I agree. I think he is still playing well. What looks like a weakness in Peyton is probably more of a testament to how bad his O line is playing and well the Jags D is playing.
BTW, has anyone noticed the defensive set the Jags used with 2:19 left in the game. Look at the D line. I thought it was very interesting. I probably would have switched Groves’ and Spicer’s positions/assignments, and the same goes for D. Smith and Mike Pete.
This what I saw (for what it's worth)
Pointing out Jeff Saturday was right on. In saying that, I have to believe the defensive line has come a long way. Peyton was rushed and could not establish a rhythm. Important for his style of QB.
I don’t believe the Cornerbacks will get away with the holding/shirt pulling that they did on this past Sunday. They did what they had to do to cover and the Jags were lucky in the no calls.
Hard Hitting. I did not see enough of this from the LB’s. I’m talking about what the Jags are known for… that “it’s going to cost you” hit. I still think Reggie Nelson is a little too light to for the position that they have created for him. He is right there on the play, but I think when it comes down to the larger running backs, this will be a problem.
What is the status on Durant?
I agree with what you're saying, but
Reggie was brought in because he is a ball hawk. Also, he can hit when he wants. I remember 2 or 3 times where he brought the lumber. One in particular was when he trucked Jeff Garcia last year near the goal line, and knocked Garcia’s helmet off. Now, I know that changes when a back is running, but I think he is up to the task when needed.
As far Durant is concerned, he has not practiced at all. I think we’ll see Clint in the game this week while Durant heals up.
