Richard Collier Update: The worst is realized
Richard Collier Paralyzed, Leg Amputated
Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Richard Collier, shot earlier this month, is paralyzed below the waist and had his left leg amputated.Dr. Andy Kerwin, a surgeon for the University of Florida at Shands Jacksonville hospital, said Collier, who had 14 bullet wounds, is now in good condition after being previously listed in critical condition.
Kerwin said Collier had bullet wounds to the back, left groin, left legs and right buttock. In addition, a bullet severed his spinal cord, paralyzing him from the waist down. The amputation was the result of damage to his left leg and groin, which had blood clots.
All I can say is that I feel deeply for Richard Collier and his family. My thoughts go out to him and the team. I had hoped even if he could not recover to the point of being able to play football, he would walk again. Sadly neither is a reality. Richard if you happen to be reading this, Thank you for your time in Jacksonville and I never wish such an event happen again.

Just wanted to say......
this transcends football and rivalries. My thoughts are with the Colliers, The Jags, and the Fans.
This is truly unsettling.
We may cheer for different teams, but we are all part of the human race. This type of tragedy affects us all. A young man’s dreams shot to hell in an instant. What are we doing to ourselves.

Tragic...
I have been vocal, well opinionated, about the behavior of professional atheletes, but this is just so senseless.
Good god, that's horrible
Colts fan here. I’m very sorry to hear this. But if a man who took 14 bullets will live, I hope that can be the focus. Football is football. Life is way more important. Thank whatever you believe in that Richard Collier is still with us.
My best wishes and prayers for him and his family.
Crushing...
Words can’t express how upset this makes me. It’s remarkable that he’ll survive this horror, but sad that this senseless action has turned his life upside down.
Football seems so…insignificant right now.

Yes, it is sad that he will never walk again
But this man took 14 bullets and was in critical condition so the fact that he will live is not news to skim over. As bad as things may seem, it could have been a lot worse. I know someone who became paralyzed following a car accident and he lives a full life so my hope is Richard can do the same. My thoughts go out to him and his family.

This
is terrible, terrible news. Even for a non-Jags fan, this is the sort of thing that goes beyond allegiances and becomes part of rooting for humanity. My condolences to Richard, his family, and his fans.
Yay, sports.
As a Bills fan, I can almost relate to this grave and devastating happening, seeing as Kevin Everett’s life was placed in limbo at the beginning of the last football year; however, this is a much more serious and disturbing happening. Kevin was at least able to regain his ability to walk, whereas one of Richard’s legs has been amputated and the other paralyzed. MDC is completely right, as even general fans of football are feeling this loss. Thoughts and prayers to you, Richard, and all family and friends, as you surely did nothing to deserve something so sinister as this.
I hope the gutless coward or cowards.....
who perpetrated this horrible act are caught and justice prevails. As if there actually could be justice for such a senseless and violent act. And if they’re are people out there that know who did this and are being quiet because of the “no tattle” policy, or what ever they call it, they deserve the same fate as the coward who fired into a parked car. My anger is only tempered by the sadness and grief I have for Richard and his family and friends. My thoughts and prayers are all I have to offer and right now they seem so futile. Sometimes life just seems to be turned upside down.
Thoughts are with Collier and family
… and Jags fans. This is an unimaginable tragedy. I didn’t actually realize he’d been shot that many times, either. I was shocked to read that a guy who was so proud and committed to his life as an athlete – has now lost a leg, on top of being paralyzed. I mean, I can’t imagine a worse fate for a guy who is a competitive athlete.
Thoughts and prayers to Collier, his family, and his Jaguar family.

This is so awful. The people who did this to him are absolute scum. At least he has his life and his family, both blood and football, but that’s little comfort when so much has been taken from him.

Big Rich
The man took 14 bullets and lived. I think god is saying something there. We all love Big Rich and these prayers are so small, but all we can give. May god be with him and his family
Heartbroken
We all have problems, and those for the time shoulde be put in perspective with the news of such a horrible realization of how Richard Collier will now have to live. I am not a religious man, but 14 bullets makes me strongly think otherwise, he is a true fighter.

Good luck Big Rich
I was saddened to hear the results. But I am glad Rich is alive. Good luck on the road to getting your life back. Big Rich has the heart to do it. My thoughts are with you and your family, you’re one tough dude.
I wish you all the best Richard!
I just moved from JAX but remain a huge fan. I am deeply saddened by what’s happened to Mr. Collier and wish him and his family the very best.
