Trading down in the Draft likley

With the Jaguars ushering in a new era, the Gene Smith era, today smith was quoted uttering this statement when asked about his draft philosophies:

“I have a base-hit philosophy. The more you get on base, the more you’re going to score, whereas the more you try to hit home runs, the more you’re going to strike out."

With the Jaguars having only 6 picks in the 2009 Draft, Smith will likely look for a suitable canidate to take the number 8 pick owend by the Jaguars in excange for some more "bases" in this years draft.

I tend to agree

Unless Monroe, Andre Smith, or Oher are available at #8.

Trade down

There are enough Tackles to trade down a few spots! Plus, whos to say we are going to draft a tackle? What if they sign Vernon Carey or a Jordan Gross?

Maybe

We might not want to sign another expensive free agent right now. So if Smith or Oher is not there, I think the best bet would be to trade down and stockpile some picks.

trade down

In free agency get a good tackle then in the draft we address some of our other needs and if at # 8 the value is not there trade down get a extra pick or two and go from there

I think that all Gene is going to do is wait until the clock starts on the 8th pick, look at the current remaining players and if there is no value then we move. I also am betting that Smith drafts a majority of 4 year veterens with less upside than underclassmen with potential. Just read Vic’s column from the 13th of Jan. As he said, its single hitters versus home run hitters.

Exactly

Don’t trade away from the 8th pick before you get there. You never know what value could be there, and it would be a shame if an elite left tackle was still there and we didn’t have the pick anymore. And I am a big believer of Vic’s single hitters. We need solid talent right now, no home run hitters that could be a bust.

Prefect Man for the job

Gene is the best man for the job, and after Harris the waterboy would be an improvement. Only trade down if the 3 offensive tackels are gone.

Given our draft history and the debacle of this past off season (of which Smith was a part)

I will reserve judgement on whether he’s “the man” or not. I’m all for him earning that title before I annoint him.
