New DC not Del Rio, it's Mel Tucker
Jack Del Rio is not the Defensive Coordinator for the 2009 season.
Coach Jack Del Rio hired former Cleveland defensive coordinator Mel Tucker to replace Gregg Williams, who left after one season in what his agent called an "amicable divorce."
Tucker spent the last four years with the Browns, serving three seasons as defensive backs coach and one as defensive coordinator. He also has eight years of college experience, including four at Ohio State.
I don't know how everyone came to the conclusion that Jack was taking over at DC but that is not the case. Just wanted to let you guys know..

well
nfl.com broke the story last night that Mel Tucker is the guy.
?!?!
Yeah I just read on Jaguars.com that Del Rio named Mel Tucker the DC and Russ Purnell the ST coordinator. Well you can go on the same webiste and listien to Jaguars This Week from 01/21/09 where Brian Sexton breaks the news that Del Rio would be the new DC. What is going on?!?!
I wonder if Del Rio will be calling the plays and maybe Tucker will be focusing his coaching efforts during practice...
It's Easy...
Del rio will call the plays and work with the defense EXCEPT for the Db’s…. that will be Mel’s job, however, they couldn’t name him the DB coach, because that would be a demotion from DC, so his title is DC, but that won’t be the case behind the scenes… (just an inside scoop I got from a reliable source.)

demotion
so what? If he’s not good enough to be Jags DC, then he’s the DB coach. I don’t think that’s a logical explanation for being named the DC. Someone needs to come up with some better crap than that please. All of a sudden the Jags are worried about hurting his feelings?
Hey..
Easy man, I know you “Think” you know alot… it’s the fact that he was already the Browns DC, so why would he come here for less $ and a lower position….. They gave him the DC position and to work with the DB’s… But JDR WILL have his hand in the Defense… Trust me on this one grasshopper….

Jags going low budget
It appears the Jaguars are trying to save money by hiring assistant coaches with not a good track record. Also, any good coach who is in demand won’t want to come to Jax knowing that it may be for only 1 year since JDR will be a goner if they don’t turn it around in 2009.
TICE
If he is gone, Mike Tice will be the guy who steps in… I hope that is not the case, I think Jack has done a good job and now that he FINALLY have a GM that has his head on straight, we just might be ok….

The plan is this...
When Jack Del Rio first got the job as Jaguars head coach it was Mike Smith’s first year. Jack pretty much ran the defense that year while Mike Smith learned and helped out. As Mike Smith was able to handle that duty by himself, Jack could go and focus more on other areas of the team.
You’ll notice that the entire offensive coaching staff from last year is in tact for next year. Now Del Rio is going back to focusing on the Defensive side of the ball because he knows the offense is set under that coaching staff.
Jack is just going to prime Mel Tucker like he did with Mike Smith, while in the meantime Mel will work a ton with the DB’s this year and work his way into the defensive system.
I put this together from listening to brian sexton and reading a bunch of articles.
I get my info straight from a Jaguars player… But I do agree with you….
