Around SBN: Jim Irsay: We Can Make It Work With Peyton Manning

Jags have one more game.

Or at least the coaching staff does. Jack Del Rio and the Jags Coaching staff will coach the South Squad for the Senior Bowl, Marvin Lewis and the Bengals will coach the North Squad. Jack will also have the opportunity to coach USC linebacker and first round prospect Rey Maualuga.

“My coaching staff and I are looking forward to working with the players in Mobile and coaching the Senior Bowl,” Del Rio said.  “This is a good opportunity for our staff to become very familiar with each player and see how they work throughout the week. I’m also looking forward to seeing Marvin Lewis and coaching against the Bengals staff. We expect it to be a busy and productive week.”

Nice

I think this will be a great opportunity for JDR and his staff to look at the players up close, like you said. Good luck to the South Seniors.

This is a strong indication of a turnaround

For a coaching staff to take time out and do this means a lot. They are serious about getting a close up view.

The USC guys deserve a huge look.

If there is a late round chance at Clay Matthews, grab him! A fifth or Sixth round would deliver huge value.

Jon Gruden has coached the Senior bowl many times... here's what he says the benefit is...
He loves the time it gives him and his staff to get an up close and personal look at some of the top college football players; players who will be available when the NFL Draft rolls around. Like most pro coaches, the NFL coaches don’t get much of a chance to watch these guys play during the football season because, well, they are usually busy on Saturdays getting ready for Sunday games.

“I always look forward to this,” Gruden said of coaching in the Senior Bowl. "If you’re a coach that’s really what you do. I think the skill level is obviously different.

If I'm not mistaken...

This is where Gruden scouted Cadillac Williams. I remember hearing the sideline open mic and Gruden saying, “Ya gonna play for me next year Cadillac?” He took him with their first pick. Fact.

Hum...

JDR was a LB for USC. There are 3 LB’s from USC that are going to be there. We should get another LB this year. Coincedence? I think not.

I don't know about Cushing

He’s a little undersized and I just don’t see his game translating to the next level very well.
