Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

My Preliminary Draft

Round One:       Michael Oher, OT-Ole Miss
Backup               Eugene Monroe, OT-Virginia

Round Two:      Duke Robinson, G-Oklahoma
Backup              Eben Britton, OT-Arizona

Round Three:   Percy Harvin, WR-Florida
Backup              Rhett Bomar, QB-Sam Houston State

Round Four:     Rashad Johnson, S-Alabama
Backup              Trevor Canfield, OG-Cincinnati

Round Five:      Jason Phillips, MLB-TCU
Backup              Patrick Chung, S-Oregon
Backup              Derrick Williams, WR-Penn State

Round six:        Clay Matthews, OLB-USC

Early Round Logic: Since first round draft picks have a 50% success rate, go for the offensive line in the first two picks.  If you hit on both, wow, set for years, but if not, someone comes through.

Round 3 logic:  If a really good WR makes it to round three, take him.  If a really good QB makes it to round three take him. The QB doesn't seem to be a need but if he hits, he becomes trade bait later or sooner or later you must develop a young QB.

Round 4&5 logic:   Just best available player.  Would love a good safety and a good MLB.  I don't think we are as set at LB as we think and competition is a good thing.  A very competitive safety would shake things up. Derrick Wiliams is a poor mans Troy Williamson.

Round 6 logic:   Please please please get Clay Matthews. His Dad was so fabulous that I know his namesake won't let him down. If ever there would be a hard working kid, Clay is him.

P.S.  Preparing this draft taught me how tough it can be. I tried to pick people who wanted to play football and weren't a reach at the draft position.  It is only a preliminary look. Add your choices to the discussion. - Terry

No D-Lineman

I am somewhat suprised to see no DT(s). If you had to insert a DT somewhere where would you take one?

by Jermaside4 on Jan 7, 2009 9:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I can't find a D-Lineman that is a sure thing.

Can you recommend one? I looked but there doesn’t seem to be a good third round selection.

Nice List

Nice list, and I like your draft strategy. Percy Harvin may not fall all the way to round three, but if he does, it would be great to grab him.

by Bestjagfan on Jan 7, 2009 9:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Percy Harvin

is 5’11" 195… and I that’s a media guide weight, not a true weight. I have major concerns about how he’d hold up in the NFL. Even before he got hurt this week, and before I realized his ankle had been a problem before, I thought he was way too small.

What kind of role would he have on an NFL team? I’m thinking a Wes Welker like receiver, but with even more speed. You want him for his YAC, not necessarily his deep threat speed, although it makes for a nice mix. Welker’s not really anything more than a catch-it and-fall-down possession receiver, so I guess he’s a bad comparison. I don’t see Harvin playing RB unless he gains 10 – 15 lbs, or even then really.

Well maybe he COULD play RB, I just looked up Chris Johnson and he’s only listed as 5’11" 200lbs. Yeah, Harvin will never make it to the 3rd round, he’ll probably go early 2nd.

by JirafaBo on Jan 8, 2009 9:48 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

error

I said Welker wasn’t much of a YAC guy, then I saw that he led the NFL in 2008 in YAC with an average of 6.8 per reception. Guess he’s does it with more of a consistant 5 – 10 yards YAC, instead of the big long runs.

by JirafaBo on Jan 16, 2009 4:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

I meant to correct you a long time ago. I must have gotten distracted or something. He probably gets most of his yards from YAC. He hardly ever goes deeper than 12 yards or so. He’s also a pretty good punt returner.
Harvin is faster, but Welker is a little shiftier. They are decent comparisons.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 17, 2009 2:39 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I like it.

I’d replace Harvin (who I don’t think is still on the board after he runs a 4.2 at the Combine: i.e. Chris Johnson) with the Best Available DT

Clay Matthews

wont last till the 6th. He wont last past our 5th pick.
I know of a DL that I would like as a late pick or FA.
A DT from Iowa. And I don’t mean King.
I’m talking about the other guy, Matt Kroul.
He’s not big even though we do need a big DT eventually, but we could also use another Derek Landri which is who this guy reminds me of. They are about the same height and weight and the same motor and style.
Because of the lack of depth at the DT position, I would stay away from the first DT’s, because we would probably have to reach to get one of them.

Do you think,

that we will trade back this year, for example in the 2nd round to get more picks in this draft?

by Zoltan from Budapest on Jan 7, 2009 11:04 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

depends on how the QB's perform in the combine...

If all 3 QB’s have amazing showings, then some teams may want to try to trade up to get that much desired QB to be their long term answer. Flacco and Ryan have performed wonders this season and may cause a team to think that one of the QBs could be their quick fix. Miami is a team that NEEDS a new star QB. This will be chad’s last productive year undoubtedly so they may want to trade. Although The Tuna is the last cat I would want to negotiate with.

Good first round

Though I think we’ll need some luck with any of the 2nd/3rd rounders. I say they are all drafted ahead of our position in those rounds.

Probably true

But sometimes good value falls into the early 2nd round. If that happened with the second round guys I picked, we would have a quality draft. At least we aren’t reaching!

Upon further inspection

Round 1: My top 2 choices as well.

Round 2: Duke Robinson won’t make it past Round 1. If we get Oher or Monroe in Round 1, I don’t think we’ll go for another tackle. My guess, Fili Moala, the big DT out of USC or maybe if Harvin or Jeremy Maclin fall, we get one of them.

Round 3: Somebody will be mesmerized by Harvin’s 40 time well before now. Bomar on the other hand is interesting. Has an arm and legs, but the head on his shoulders, considering he’s accepting a $10,000 check from a booster away from being OU’s starting QB tonight.

I also don't see any "can't miss" DT

I don’t want to waste a draft pick just because someone plays DT. The players selected have to be real players, real potential. There isn’t a DT that seems to qualify.

Fili Moala

is horrible. The only way I see him succeeding is if he plays in a 3-4 as a DE. He’s not nearly stout enough to be a DT but he’s not fast enough to play DE in a 4-3 or even a 3 tech in 4-3.
Ignore his stats and his size and the USC background. He will be bust at any round for us.

Love your thinking Tkopa.

O line MUST be addressed and upgraded. I agree with taking a D lineman in round 3 but I don’t have a potential candidate at this time either.

Our WR corp needs to be blown up. We have way to many 1st & 2nd rounders on this anemic roster. That’s way too much $ for NO production. We’ll keep some of them but I’d expect Porter, Williams, and possibly Jones to be released / traded. Neither warrant 1st rounder $$. Take best available in later rounds.

by OGN on Jan 8, 2009 11:40 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think Williams will be the only one not returning

Jones turned out to be a safe, reliable receiver in 3rd & 6+ situations and even that alone is worth keeping. Porter already got tons of the money and it wont cost a whole lot to bring him back next year. 1st rounder money has inflated quickly over the last 2-3 years so it’s not like Matt Jones’s salary is even that much.

by SoCalStites on Jan 8, 2009 1:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Matt Jones was a late 1st round pick and his salary for last season was only like 660 thousand.

He was a steal for that price bro. He was the best we’ve seen him ever and he’s turned his attitude around. There is no way he’s gone, unless some team wants to offer a 2nd rounder, then we might actually bite.

I’m just now getting comfortable with making regular comparisons of MJD to Westbrook. Harvin has proven to be a college game breaker, but not an NFL one yet. I can’t wait to see what he does tonight though.

Sorry, I'm Young

Who was Clay Matthews’ father? and does this kid actually have potential?

by harveyismyboy on Jan 8, 2009 5:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Clay Matthews Father is Clay Matthews Jr.

He played something like 19 seasons in the NFL and went to the Pro Bowl 4 times.

His brother was Bruce Matthews, played on the O-Line and went to the pro bowl 14 times now in the HOF.

His father (or grandfather, depending on which Clay Matthews we mean) was drafted in 1949 and played for the 49ers as both an offensive lineman and a defensive end.

In short, Clay Matthews USC come from the deepest family roots in football. He will be the third generation of “Clay Matthews” to play in the NFL. What kind of pressure to succeed do you think that brings? Also, he sites his father as his role model.

AGREED

DT, CB, C, MLB. However, let’s be honest, this team almost needs something at every position for Depth. We don’t have good depth on this team. I don’t think Rob Meier will be our starting DT next year, I don’t expect Reggie Heyward to return. Rocky Bernard is a free agent DT and a big body and he’s an under the radar kind of guy. We need to decide on MLB quickly! Are they going to move Daryl Smith to Middle and go with Ingram and Durant as outside backers? I hope not, because neither one of them can cover worth crap. Smith on the other hand can cover. I like Durant going to MLB instead. We need a MAN shut down corner, we do NOT have that (RASHEEN) is a ZONE corner, not a man corner. (ASK MARVIN HARRISON AND HE’LL TELL YOU THE SAME.) Are we Re-signing Meester? If not, is Norman the answer? NO! We have alot to do I think, and it will take two years or so.

So we can draft best available at each round regardless of position and benefit. I think as long as we get real players and not position holders we will be fine.

......

The problem has been that we have reached for several players in recent drafts and we have drafted guys that don’t fit our system or have misused! We draft Matt Jones and put him at slot for the first 3 yrs, WHY? He’s 6’6 230 and runs a 4.4… Id have him running a Post, Corner Post, Slant or a Fly, every time! But we had him running outs, drags, curls and all the small guy stuff! Then you have Mercedes Lewis who is a receiving TE and we have him blocking… WHY? Yes you have to do both sometimes, but he’s not a natural blocker. In this draft we need to start with the big ugly’s first! Because they make the difference! A GOOD D-line will make a secondary look like pro bowlers… They will force the QB to make bad reads and throw the ball away or make bad throws.

by floridafalcons#63 on Jan 8, 2009 5:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Like I've said before

I like the feeling I get when thinking about this draft. Because we have so many needs the the BAP will usually fill a need too.
One thing that makes me a little sad about this is that there are no real game changers at the DT position.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 8, 2009 5:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

However, there are alot of guys that can fill holes and make a difference!
Peria Jerry DT 6’2 290 Ole Miss (58 tackles, 14 for loss, and 3.5 sacks)

B.J. Raji DT 6’1 323 Boston College (37 tackles, 13 for loss, and seven sacks) I LIKE HIM!!!!

Fili Moala DT 6’5 295 USC (32 tackles, 5.5 for loss, and 2.5 sacks.)

Ooo

I just found out that DE Everette Brown declared. We just finished drafting 2 DE’s last year, but I think Brown can be more of an everydown DE than Groves. And if we can’t get a good DT I say grab another DE and rotate one or more of them inside. I know people may not like my idea, but everyone keeps saying it’s about BAP and he could be at pick 8.
I’ve really grown accostomed to thinking that we will be getting one of the 4 best OT in the first rd so for me to change my mind it’s really hard.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 8, 2009 6:17 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Everette Brown is a beast

But we have more pressing needs than DE right now and there are 3 tackles who can be BAP at #8 as well.

"I smoke. If this bothers anyone, I suggest you look around at the world in which we live and shut your mouth."-Bill Hicks

by FSBlueApocalypse on Jan 8, 2009 6:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Easy Now

Everette Brown will be a reach at #8 unless he is just a freak of nature. (could be the case, Im an FSU fan) However, here again, we drafted GROVES last year, in which he is a 3-4 linebacker, not a 4-3 DE….. Everyone Agree?

We should have drafted a OT last year in the draft since there was a ton of OT’s last year and then we could of taken brown this year! See, make me GM! LOL

by floridafalcons#63 on Jan 8, 2009 6:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It's a hard choice for me

but if only Jason Smith is there of the top 4 OT, I think I go with Everette. The reason being that Jason may be a real good pass blocker, probably the best, he may not fit our run first mentallity. If that’s the case I don’t think he would be worth the upgrade over Barnes who we could resign. Whereas if we draft Brown we can upgrade the entire DL. And we have more wiggle room as to what we can do with the aging guys like Meier, Hayward (I still think he’s pretty good, but for how much longer?), Spicer.
The Giants were criticized for picking so many DE’s, but who’s laughing now.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 8, 2009 6:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You have a point

Although I think we need to upgrade the o-line, you have a point about the Giants and their pass rush. If the top four OT go, maybe Everette is the right choice.

by Bestjagfan on Jan 8, 2009 6:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Only if the top OT go before #8 (which I doubt!!!)

There are two player positions that require super high draft choices:

All time great running backs
Left Tackles

Almost everyone else can be found elsewhere.

and...

in my opinion it all starts with the “O” Line. I know the ole’ saying defense wins superbowls, but think about it… how many times has a suck offense made it to the post-season? Not often. You have to put some points on the board. No… I think build the O line and get what you can for defense later in the rounds. BAP as long as he’s an offensive lineman HA!

by Jaghomer on Jan 9, 2009 7:48 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Brown

Everette Brown is certainly a fine athlete. But we can’t waste a first round pick on another defensive end right now. We really need to focus on a left tackle in the draft.

by Bestjagfan on Jan 8, 2009 6:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

WE WILL TRADE DOWN BEFORE WE TAKE A DE AT #8, GUARANTEED!!! BTW, THE GIANTS DID WHAT THE JAGS DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO AND THAT’S PREPARE FOR AGING PLAYERS! THEY DRAFTED MATHIAS KIWANUKA TO REPLACE STRAHAN…. TUCK IS A DT/DE AND THEY GOT LUCKY WITH HIM IN THE 3RD ROUND OUT OF NOTRE DAME A FEW YEARS AGO

by floridafalcons#63 on Jan 8, 2009 6:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

How many times have you heard about

one DE helping out the other. The differnce between Brown and Spicer isn’t the only dividends we would get by picking Brown. He would also improve the entire DL. It’s one of those, the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts.
I can live with Barnes for another year if the interior of the OL improves and we can get back to our run game. Remember last year Garrard was well protected with the OL we already have on hand (Assuming we resign people).

by Ewdtrey on Jan 8, 2009 6:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Have you noticed what happened to KC

I would have thought KC would have been ok without Jared Allen considering how well everyone else around him was doing, and they added Glenn Dorsey to their line. But when Allen left, that DL had one of the fewest sack totals in NFL history.

Please

Stop, im getting a headache! We have to think Logically here, another Top-10 DE two years in a row? HHHMM…. yeah, not going to happen! Hell, i’d be an upgrade over Spicer, so what does that say? Barnes is AWFUL, any decent DE, tears him a new one. Draft an OT, if not one rated that high on your board at your pick, then trade down. PERIOD!

I wouldn't be so sure

Who is likely to take (or needs) a OT in the top 7? Let’s see…
Detroit (Gosder has been mostly a bust and he’s definitely not a LT).
The Rams will pick one no matter what.
The Bengals.
The Raiders.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 8, 2009 7:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The way I see it

many of the top 7 teams can use a DE or another. In either case we will have a good pick, and in all likelyhood the pick will practically be made for us.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 8, 2009 7:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Also

our LT position may not be as a big as a problem as we’re thinking.
The Titans added one guy in Jake Scott, a guard, to their team. They kept LT Roos in his position and still the Titans reduced their sacks from 30 in 2007 to a league leading 12 this year. That’s what a run game does for you.
With this in mind, we might even be better off adding someone like Herman Johnson in the second round. We need interior help anyhow. And this gives us more pseudo depth at all positions on the OL. If Johnson starts at RGLG then either Norman and or Mo Wiliams can kick out to OT or any other position.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 8, 2009 8:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

we will have a good LT to choose from

I'd say

trading out of the top 5 is hard to do. Top 10 hasn’t been as difficult to get rid of.

by SoCalStites on Jan 8, 2009 7:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True

but even when the Ravens traded with us they had to give up more than their fair share of draft points. They were lucky that most of their draft picks worked out(so far), but that isn’t always the case. Even then when you trade down you may end up somewhere you don’t like. This is again seen with the Raven’s trade. They had to trade back up with someone else to get Flacco. There are a lot of questions, when trading out of the top ten. Also top ten trades can kill a career/franchise just as easily as it can help it. That makes anyone skeptical. And it makes trade partners scarce.

by Ewdtrey on Jan 8, 2009 7:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't trade

a top 10 draft pick, specially, that the so much needs what the team has right now. But if the Jaguars can do it in the second round, I wouldn’t mine for some extra picks.

By the way, who would be for you a huge disapointment to pick in the 1st round?
Plus, what do you think if the Jaguars pick Malcolm Jenkins with that 8th pick?

the guy never gets thrown at. I’m a little skeptical of picking a guy that isn’t tested enough. Heck there were times he was getting a little careless in coverage. I don’t like that attitude in my players. I know he was prbably just getting bored, I would probably get that way too, but I don’t like/accept that in a top 8 pick.

Couldn’t of said it any better

Um......

did you see him in the Fiesta bowl game? HE GOT BURNT! I think he’s got potential, but idk, I think we might can find one later in the draft. Look, im not big on taking CB’s early anymore, cause let’s be honest, how many CB’s in the league that are GREAT have come real early? Not Many….

Ohio State guys...

make me nervous. If the team is consistently worse than SEC teams and other big programs like USC and Texas then there players probably aren’t as good as advertised

Yeah

he’s kind of riding the hype that’s carrying over from last year.

Not true...

the f—-eyes produce some pretty good NFL talent and without the pacman mentality – minus Clarrett of course (what a dork). Good mid-west work ethic. When I hear Ohio St., I usually think defense LB or running back. Just a generality though.

hhhmm...

I wonder how laurinitis will do in the NFL. I like his leadership.. something the jags could use on defense

I think

the best players are the best leaders. I don’t really like to worry about who’s the best yeller. If everyone knows what they are doing and everyone is a true football player that really cares about football a leader doesn’t have to do much more than play and maybe make some calls on the field.

Burnt

He sure did get burnt, more than once. A corner would not be the right choice with a number eight pick. If we traded down to later in the first and decided to take a corner, I really see star potential in Macho Harris.

I really

like Maucho Harris too. He’s gonna go lower than he should. So I guess I’m saying he’s gonnna be a steal.

Brandon Spikes

Brandon Spikes looked really good when I was watching last night, he seemed to be everywhere. Is he supposed to be going in the first round? might he be someone we would trade down to get? But there seems to be a very strong LB group this year.

I agree. He played brilliantly!

I also admit I was wrong about Percy Harvin

Percy

It’s easy to look at his size and write him off as a track star. But he proved how tuff he can be playing in the National Championship with a bum ankle. And when he runs, he really runs with a good mix of power for a wide receiver type. In the NFL, that’s what he would have to play though. I don’t see him being a running back.

by Bestjagfan on Jan 9, 2009 10:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He's got

thicker calves and arms than I thought. If he put more muscle on his upper legs and glutes, he could be pretty good in this league as a hybrid. He doesn’t exactly fit our system(OL). But he would do well with a team like the Eagles. In fact I wouldn’t put it past them to draft him. They already have a few guys back there(Correll and I believe Lorenzo Booker), but seeins how everyone there gets hurt all the time, they could use the depth and youth.

BOTH OF THEM

SPIKES AND HARVIN BOTH LOOKED GOOD THE OTHER NIGHT. I THINK SPIKES NEEDS TO LOSE THAT BEER GUT HE HAS (DON’T KNOW IF ANYONE NOTICED THAT) BUT I THINK HE WILL BE REALLY GOOD IN THE LEAGUE.

Yeah

he did look fat. That usually doesn’t bode well for longitivity and work ethic.

Less Caps, if you don't mind.

I love your insights, but if I could implore you to stay off the caps-lock, it’d be super. I’m programmed to see all caps as yelling, and I don’t think that’s how you mean to come across!

Thanks!

The Hokie fan in me

would love to see the Jags snatch Macho in the 2nd round!

by Jacked Up on Jan 13, 2009 7:33 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Macho

will probably end up a low 1st. But I sure hope he falls to the 7th pick of the 2nd. lol
