I know I'm a homer, so just wanted to get some other opinions about who has been the best tight end in the AFC this season. And I am just talking about this season, wasn't comparing career stats on these guys. Colts fans were going to ban me for voicing this argument on their blog, so I decided to make my first fanpost on BRB. Also posting on the Jags blog to get input from a division rival.

Owen Daniels and Dallas Clark are both tied for first I'd say....

I can't argue with the Clark supporters.
Just thought OD needs to be mentioned as a top tier tight end. Mercedes is pretty good too, he tore me up on Madden.

Marcedes
has the greatest upside of them all. And probably the best blocker excluding maybe Heath Miller.
I like Lewis.
And I would expect his numbers to compare with these four, if he had a top tier QB throwing him the ball.

Ah...but he is a subtle troll...
We’ve been enjoying his presence over at Stampede Blue for a while now. It almost makes me wish we had an 0-6 record so he would just move along…

It's a really difficult decision between Clark and Daniels
As to who is better right now. But if I could have either one on the Jaguars, obviously it would be Daniels simply because of the age factor.
I personally like Dallas Clark better,
He’s on my fantasy team and i like how he plays as like a TE/WR hybrid. You can make the arguement for either of them tho.

Alright, let's do this right...
1. As already stated by everyone above with a brain, you are NOT going to get unbiased results by polling teams whose tight end is in the polling.
(Ex.: "So-And-So is obviously the best TE in football because he plays for my team and since I am a winner and I only back winners, then by the Transitive Property So-And-So is a winner and is therefore the winner of this poll.")
2. You are not going to get unbiased opinions from teams who are in the same division as any of the candidates in this poll.
(Ex. 1: "I hate So-And-So’s guts because he plays for our division rivals and always makes our defense look like a pack of drunken hillbillies stumbling around in the dark looking for their lost coon-hound ‘Cletus’, therefore, I would sooner set my ass-hair on fire than vote for him.
Ex. 2: "So-And-So, our division rivals TE, regularly beats on us like orphans at a Catholic monastery, and since I know we’re awesome then the only logical explanation is that he is the best fucking TE to ever walk in cleats. He gets my face-saving vote.")
3. You are not going to get an unbiased opinion from inter-division rivals either, such as between the Colts and the Pats or the Steelers and the Pats, for much the same reasons as stated in point #2.
(Ex.: Pats Fan: "Gawd, I hate those douchebag Colts and Stealers! They’s always a takin’ what is rightfully owas’ as the best fans in the facking universe! I would rather stick my cawk in a gawdamn wood-chippa’ than vote for they’ra guy!")
4. You’re not going to get an informed opinion from any NFC fans do to lack of familiarity with the candidates.
(Ex.: NFC Fan #1: "Hey, who do you think the best TE in the AFC is, buddy?"
NFC Fan #2: "What the hell is the AFC?")
Conclusion: Poll the remaining AFC East teams (Bills, Jets, Dolphins). They have little-to-no dog in this fight and would be the closest thing you’re going to get to an unbiased and informed opinion. Hell, we’ll even give you the Pats. Go ahead and ask ‘em.
To make it truly fair, though, you need to change that Coltsbanishment crap in the body.
Unless, that is, you’re afraid of a fair fight?
that a little trollish
We have a unbiased opinion actually since we play both of you twice a year. So it would be fine to ask for an opinion from someone who is in neither camp. I’m sad to say this but I think Dallas Clark is better, but if you want to discount our opinions, go ahead. Troll on.

You misunderstand...
I wasn’t trying to “troll” up on you guys. I was trying to determine the least biased location for a poll like this while adding a bit of humor to my comment. I can’t really see how you were offended by this, but if you were, my apologies…

Its alright
Just a small misunderstanding. Tho i’d think any opinion other that SD, INDY, HOU, or PITTS fans would be acceptable.

Daniels is Top Tier
but I don’t know about the best. It’s a matter of preference I suppose. I chose Miller for the fact he’s a good run blocker and he’s a pretty decent option in the passing game.
Daniels has gotten a lot better in the blocking area, but he’s still behind Miller in that department.
Ignore the hype; look at the results.
I'm Pretty Sure
I’m gonna have to go with Antonio Gates. He doesn’t have the top numbers out of the group, but he does have the most explosive plays. Plus, career wise, he rules all of these players. Antonio it is

My problem
with Gates is that he’s used almost exclusively as a receiver. Clark and Daniels both block more than Gates, or have in the past. Miller however is a proven all around TE.
Well
Daniels tries to block, but I get what you’re saying. Above people were talking of their receiving numbers, in which Gates is the best excluding Tony Gonzalez. Miller is the best blocker out of the group, no doubt… and not a bad receiver.

He's Got
Great hands and is a good route runner. I don’t think he has as much speed as Daniels and definitely not as much as Gates. But he is too often kept in to block, like you said.

Gates
Is bigger I believe, so he may look slower. Clark is fast, but he has nowhere near Gates’ quickness when breaking in and out of routes.

blocking... it counts even for recieving ends!
No doubt OD is exciting, but I’ve watched him closely vs. the browns last year and Owen Daniels was the worst player on the field. It was actually comical once I pointed it out to my friends and we started watching him get bounced around. He was individually responsible for what seemed like a dozen blown plays for losses and couldn’t even stop guys from going across the field to run down a play.
I actually thought there was some mistake and they had some other guy wearing 81… I really did!
Dallas Clark may not inspire anyone with his blocking, but he mixes it up a bit and slows people down when he needs to. He’s tougher than you think; it’s just that his line doesn’t need him. That along puts him a couple of levels above OD in my books… and although it’s a dreaded NFC comparison, he’s about a dozen steps below Witten.
For what it’s worth I saw OD actually block on a running TD in the SF game, so maybe he’s getting better:

Daniels
Yeah, he gets pushed around a lot in run blocking. I remember watching a game last season where he was on the other side of a stretch play. He got beat by his man so fast, he chased the play down from behind across the field.
