JDR
Reading Zoltan's post and all the responses I realize how conflicted I am by the issue of Jack Del Rio as our head coach. There are those who believe in him, and those who want him fired tomorrow ... including my buddy's very adamant wife, who I've been tailgating with for 15 years.
I've always thought he was a good mixture of patience and toughness, and never struggled with having a long-time former player -- a "player's coach" -- as the leader of an NFL team. Three or four years ago I had a drink at a Jags game with a former member of the team who told me that the only group that partied more than the players was the coaches; it's hard to hear that and not question the overall commitment and maturity of the staff. But that was three of four years ago. I suspect it's a different environment now.
Last night on the Pittsburgh-Denver game, ESPN put up a graphic of the Steelers' recent first round draft picks. Check this out:
Pittsburgh Jacksonville
2003 Troy Polamalo Byron Leftwich
2004 Ben Roethlisburger Reggie Williams
2005 Heath Miller Matt Jones
2006 Santonio Holmes Marcedes Lewis
2007 Lawrence Timmons Reggie Nelson
2008 R. Mendenhall Derrick Nelson
JDR is not going anywhere, not with his current contract and the current ticket environment, so the discussion is moot. But it's a discussion we will continue to have anyway. I guess what bothers me most in regard to the coaching is the inconsistency; we are the Jaguars for crying out load, not the Bipolar Bears. Some years we are good on the road and weak at home. Some years we play well against good teams and play down to weaker opponents. This year we play solidly one week and horrendously the next. I blame that on coaching.
But in my view we should cut Jack some slack, give him a chance to continue to mature as a coach and see what he can do with a decent roster. Vic says it all the time: we don't have the players. If we want to hammer JDR for player personnel issues, fine. But let's give Gene a year or two more and see what JDR can do with what he gets. For some strange reason, I think he can get it done.

I agree with the article
Talent is/was(?) the problem. Jack was nearly reached the Superbowl in 2007-when he have the team to make it. 1-3 more sdraft and offseason like what we saw and we can go back there.

Come on, no one is saying that
I’d be last one defending Jack if I sincerely thought he had the players to succeed.

that is precisely the logic that's in play here - that's all I hear - totally ignore 6+ years - just get players
let me phrase this way – the Jags have made it to the playoffs under his watch – so he has had players otherwise no playoffs. Why can’t he sustain any success with those players?? How come his divisional record sucks with those players??
You can’t have it both ways.
What players?
Exactly what players would have brought this team sustained success? Reggie Williams, Matt Jones, Khalif Barnes? Maybe Byron Leftwich or Jerry Porter or Reggie Nelson? There’s a reason most of those players are not starting or fully out of the league.
Successful players like Fred Taylor, Jimmy Smith, Donovin Darius, and Marcus Stroud aged, but the drafting never replaced them with similarly-talented players. I would argue that Jack has succeeded DESPITE his players.

What always struck me was...
How Shack always struck out in the first rounds but held his own in the 2nd and 3rd
Forget 08
2007: 2nd-Durrant, 3rd-Mike Walker
2006- 2nd- MJD, 3rd-Clint Ingram
2005: 2nd Khalif Barnes (Okay maybe not so great but solid) 3rd Scott Starks (The same)
2004: 2nd-Daryl Smith 3rd-Greg Jones
2003: 2nd-Rashean Mathis 3rd-Vinny Manuwai
So aside from 05 and 08 (no one is perfect) everyone we drafted in the 2nd and 3rd rounds are big time contributors or home runs (Mathis, MJD, and keep your fingers crossed: Sims-Walker). I’m too lazy to list the Steelers 2nd and 3rd round picks but look for yourself, they’re not anywhere near ours.
I do not understand how the guy can be SH** in the 1st round and great in the later rounds. It seems like in the 1st rounds he went for the physicals (height, speed, arm strength) and in the late rounds he actually sought talent. Many of them are undersized or from obscure schools and could have been first rounders.
So you have to give him a bit of credit I guess
Maybe he left the 2nd and 3rd rounds to Gene Smith
He was too busy being wrong about who to take in the 1st.

now now now... Let's be realistic... All the bad drafting wasn't Shack and the good drafting Gene...
Harris was decidedly average, and he swung for the fences in 2008, whiffing badly. That year set us back more than anything. He missed on every FA and Draft pick from 2008, however, prior to that, he was always decent. He found Collier, Montel Owens, Spoony, Uche, Vince Manuwai, sensabaugh, etc. The guy wasn’t awful by any stretch, but he had an awful year in 2008, and it is killing us now. Although it might’ve been for the best, because it allowed us to promote Gene Smith, who has been nothing short of spectacular.

Collin the more I look back to 2008
the more I have anger oward Harris. What he did last year with this franchise should be a CRIME! 25 millions to player who can’t play; terrible draft.
Sorry Collin; what for example Jack Del rio for terry; and Ted Monachino for… everyone-that is for me Harvey. I know you see he is improving; but I take my hands off he guy since Seattle. And the fact that he has 0=zero sacks in 2009 is make his case even worse. He was drafted to appear on the section: “tackles” and “Sacks” often. Yeah he already past his last year tackling record: (2008: 16 games-19 tackles-this year 8 games-23 already) but he was drafted to sack the QB. Not just drafted actully; traded away many very importnat draftpicks. Until he will be an ELITE runblocker(it is a bit obvious that he cannot sack the QB) I’m consider him as another 1st round failure.
I’m really looking for what Gene is planning for improve the pass rush in the offseason. (I say 1 veteran FA and 1 or 2 DEs needed to do something with the position)

I know you didn't read my response.... ;)
Because you said exactly what I said about 2008. It was a travesty, although it may have been for the best because it brought Gene in. Shack was horrible in the first round, absolutely awful. But 2008 was his downfall. He went from mediocre, to horrific, and it cost this team dearly

I heard suggestions that Harris picked in the 1st
and from the secind Gene Smith have bigger influences (I heard this from Lageman and Sexton-not from Vic!!!)-so maybe it isn’t coincinence…
