An Average Joe's Thoughts

I have to admit, yes, the loss was a disappointment. However I don't think the panic button should be hit just yet. We are still in the top of the wildcard race. Granted we are third, we are still in it with a favorable schedule to finish up. Don't get me wrong, I hate to lose, in anything I do or cheer for; but I'm not throwing away the season either. This team can still get to the playoffs and compete once they get there. This has been a reloading year, not rebuilding. Don't kid yourselves into thinking the year is lost.

I have some observations from todays game...

  • The loss today can be put directly on the offensive line. Three times we were in the redzone, hot and looking ready to score touchdowns, only to have the line crumble and get Garrard planted, two times he fumbled the ball. On the third occasion he was hurried twice in a row which forced bad throws. Garrard needs to hold the ball, but that wouldn't be a problem if he wasn't running for his life every time he took a snap.
  • The defense really played well today. They forced the 49ers into a few three and outs, swarmed to the ball, and generally got off the field on third down.
  • If there was a title to this game, it would have to be "The Game of Missed Chances." The offense missed chances on three scoring opportunities, all of which were in the red zone, and all of which could have been touchdowns.
  • Piotr Czech and Matt Bryant are two kickers who happen to be free agents... just sayin...

I agre with all of your words

BVut Scobee going nowhere. He did enough biiig things for this franchise. He had a reeeeely bad game that’s all
BUT he has no margin of error too in this season . One more big mistake-He will be go out from here!

Life without knowledge is death in disguise

Scobee is

NOT going ANYWHERE! Even if we had those points we would have still lost by 11 points. A guy doesn’t go from possible probowler to off your team in one meaningless performance(That doesn’t mean it was a meaningless game, but rather it didn’t matter a whole lot in the scheme of things for the game.)
The guy is still is great on kickoffs, and he’s a good tackler, especially for a kicker. And most of his misses until this game were respectable, and his percentage would be better if we weren’t going for it on 4th so often in that gray area that is usually key for kickers. Not to mention the screw-ups on protections have caused a couple blocks. I think its ridiculous that I even have to defend his spot on the team.
On another note, I think Podlesh has really come around along with the rest of the special teams.

Podlesh

Didn’t have a bad game. I’m not calling for Scobee’s head this week, but with another poor performance, I think those guys I listed above may be given a call.

It’s a “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY” league… I dont care what he’s done in the past. There is NO excuse for his actions this year.

Completely agree

Scobee should still be with this team for a long time. I don’t know the numbers but I think he has had more touch backs this seasons, correct me if I’m wrong, it just seems like it.

by Messina on Nov 30, 2009 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

Calm down there buddy,

it was one game ok. I’m pissed off too, we all are, but hell he is a GREAT kicker, and even the best have off games, or even seasons. He still came through when it has mattered, like the Jets game or the K-City game etc ok.

I Don't

Know about great. Janikowski is better in Oakland, Gostowski is better in New England, for example.

Isn’t an Owski, but he is an eastern european.

Everytime I see Janikowski I laugh

He was a first rounder haha

(Sorry for the random side note)

Believe Me

I think its hilarious Al Davis actually took a kicker in the first round.

It was actually a good move

when he used one on a punter. Their value is underrated. Still a 1st rounder for someone that you can occasionally get off the street.

by Ewdtrey on Nov 30, 2009 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

The Punter

Was like a third though, and he is with out a doubt the best punter in the league… so yeah, the punter pick made sense. Janikowski is a nice kicker, but like you said you can usually find a decent undrafted/7th rounder for much less.

I'm talking

about a long time ago with Ray Guy.

Oh, My B

I remember about six months ago on Ask Vic some guy asked if Ray Guy should be considered for the hall of fame. Vic tore him up…

Drafted just before Chad Pennington and Shaun Alexander

Also keep in mind Neil Rackers was taken in the 6th round of the same draft.

Good Point

A good punter is always a great commodity though.

Shaun Alexander

was way way overrated. That OL made that team/running game.

by Ewdtrey on Nov 30, 2009 7:34 PM EST up reply actions

Gostowski

is overrated and not as versatile as Scobee, considering his value as a cover guy and kick off specialist.

by Ewdtrey on Nov 30, 2009 7:25 PM EST up reply actions

I never said he was the best

but he is one of the best, most of the time. Both Janikowski and Gostowski have missed field goals, and its not like Scobee missed the game winner.

by Messina on Dec 1, 2009 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

Field Goal Wise

I disagree. One of the best for kickers in the NFL most likely means top 5. I can name five better kickers than Scobee right now off the top of my head… Janikowski, Gostowski, Jay Feely, Matt Prater, Nate Kaeding.

You know it seems like this happens every year

Scobee is absolute money early, goes through a bad streak with a lack of confidence somewhere in the middle of the season and fixes it late.

by Adam Stites on Nov 30, 2009 2:01 PM EST reply actions

He

Did do the same thing last year as well. But never this bad. He already has three more misses this year than he did last year. Granted a few were blocked, but that can be on the kicker as well.

Some of them

have been what-the-hell-types just before an end of a half/etc.

by Ewdtrey on Nov 30, 2009 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

I know

I remember that 63 yard attempt at the end of the first half in the Colts game. Though a big legged kicker like Scobee should have been closer to that. I remember Matt Bryant in Tampa Bay made a 62 yarder a few years back for a win, and he isn’t considered to have a big leg
