Garrard told to not audible

Enjoy that carry MoJo, I'm going to audible out the next drive.

It is being reported that David Garrard has been told by the team to not audible out of running plays as much. The coaching staff was widely criticized for opening up the game with nine straight passing plays. However, the first two plays were called runs to Maurice Jones-Drew that Garrard then audibled to passing plays.

And the plot thickens. If this is the case, is it the coaching staff trying to cover their butts, did MJD complain behind closed doors, or something else?

They'll make what coach Jack Del Rio called "hard ball calls." That means quarterback David Garrard will be told on occasion not to call audibles out of running plays and into passing plays.....

"We took that privilege away or that ability away and said, "Look, just hand it to him and let him run the ball,' " Del Rio said.

Del Rio also said that if Reggie Nelson doesn't tackle better in the future than he did against the Titans, he won't be in the lineup. Nelson moved from safety to cornerback in place of injured Rashean Mathis on Sunday.

Audibling out of the run to a pass, unless there’s like 10 people in the box, seems like a monumentally stupid thing to do. However, its surprising that this has come out. Usually things like this stay behind closed doors. I’m thinking Del Rio is just trying to cover himself.

Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!

I don't know just yet

I know just 1 thing: We will run the ball on Sunday!

I WANT my QB to be able to audible out of bad plays

depending on the Defense. This seems more of a coaching the QB issue than anything else. To run a given play for the sake of running it isn’t smart.

David can also check to a different running play as well. He can also check from a pass to a run – again, depending upon the defense. Limiting your QB is knee jerk. Coach his ass up JDR!

Exactly

The problem is not David changing the play… the problem is that the team (including David, obviously) did not execute on the changed plays.

The QB is SUPPOSED to audible away from runs if the box is stacked. If we run just for the sake of running, no matter what the defense is doing it is going to be a loooooong season.

At least the games would go by faster

So maybe it would be a little less ugly.

I'd rather have a QB trust the play called...

and adjust the protection first before he changes the plays. This could be why the line has been having problems… they call a run play and he changes it to a pass play when line is set for a run play. I haven’t seen him adjust the protection once this season…

Well when I watch

a game where I see both Manning brothers, Drew Brees, and heck even the 2nd year player Matt Ryan change protection during a game and then I watch how Garrard never adjust his… well. I also watch a lot more Jaguars games than the games of these other QBs… I’m just saying. It’s not Madden… it’s just what a quality QB should do.

I have a problem with this

This is politics 101, deflect blame from you, or your staff, to others. If David was checking out of running plays that’s one thing, but you don’t air that out in public. You sit David down in private, tell him to stop changing to pass plays in certain situations, and you move on.

Now most of us were frustrated at MJD’s 8 rushing attempts, understandably. Hell, the typical fire Del Rio article was up less than 24 hours after the game. Del Rio should have came out and said a generic “Playcalling was an issue. We’ve taken steps to address that, and down the road you’ll see more runs.” He could have left it at that, manned up to criticism of himself and Dirk, and then proved the doubters wrong.

This is ass covering plain and simple.

Ignore the hype; look at the results.

Please note

That is not a backhanded defense of Del Rio. I’ve had issues with the inconsistency since 2006. I like Del Rio, I believe overall he’s a good coach, and I believe that bad drafting has hurt his rep. However, if David was checking out of running plays why doesn’t Dirk or Del Rio correct that in the 1st half? Why didn’t they go to David, tell him “We need to run the ball. Don’t check into Pass Plays”?

I think Jack needs to overachieve the next 9 games or he’ll be gone.

Ignore the hype; look at the results.

Everyone complained about the lack of running plays and the 9 straight pass plays

Well David said after the game they were calling runs and he was checking out of them. Garrard is clearly to blame for some terrible passes that were intercepted and now it’s looking to me like he’s to blame for the lack of running plays.

he is simply a back up QB

and thats all he will ever be he is not a game changer he dose nothing that any other QB in collage can do.
he cant make all the throws
and he makes are WR look like crap.
and now he thinks he is the play caller for are team and dose not want the best player on are team to have the ball.
he needs to go along with the coaching staff if we are going to rebuild then we need to start now!

Well, I do not care who calls the plays, but I suggest they call MJD’s number more often.
