Hit Me: Questions About The Houston Texans?

Howdy, BCCers. I'm Tim from Battle Red Blog, and in light of the upcoming game between our two rooting interests, I'm here to answer any questions you might have about my beloved Houston Texans. Jonathan was kind enough to do the same over at BRB, so head over that way if you'd like to see the questions Texans fans have about the Jags. While you guys probably have a pretty good feel for your AFC South brethren, there could be a query or three you'd like to see addressed.

So hit me, Jaguars fans. Want to know whether we're witnessing the last few games of the Gary Kubiak Era? I'll give you my opinion. Wondering what happened to the Texans after the promising 5-3 start? I'll answer between choking sobs. Care to offer some bits of string and shiny things for Dunta Robinson? On behalf of Rick Smith, I'll accept and be convinced I got over on the deal.

Here's to a great game on Sunday that sees both teams emerge healthy. Best of luck.

Ok about Dunta

How long has he been the least favorite man in Houston? Was the decision to franchise him at all supported by the fans or was this season the one where it all turned sour?

by Adam Stites on Dec 1, 2009 9:55 PM EST reply actions

People were irritated with him when he held out, I personally am sick to death of the NFL holdouts. When he showed up to the first game with pay me rick on his shoes, and proceeded to suck ass, thats when most people turned on him I think. The final straw was the Monday night game against the tits, even his most hardcore supporters, however few there were, were done with him after his atrocious play in that game.

by nolander on Dec 1, 2009 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

We liked franchising him

Because:

1. We didn’t know how good he’d play, post injury.
2. The games he played while “not 100%” after injury last year left something to be desired.

and

3. He tried to strong arm the organization for his own benefit, played a hardass, overestimated his worth and ability and made himself look stupid.

Everyone who hated on Dunta in the offseason (many of us joined the “Fuck Dunta” bandwagon) was vindicated when he started playing. He pretended the first 4 games were his “preseason”. He needs a PR man and an accountant…

Re: Dunta

Dunta went from quite possibly the most beloved Texan to the most despised this past offseason. After getting franchised (which was undoubtedly the smart move for the Texans, considering Dunta was coming off a horrific injury and the Texans were/are woefully thin at CB), Dunta went to the press and claimed that Rick Smith lied to him. Then, on the morning of the draft, Dunta claimed that he’d no-show OTAs and training camp unless the team promised not to franchise him again. In the meantime, word leaked (presumably from the Texans) that Dunta had turned down a multiyear deal worth $23 mil guaranteed; Dunta, despite having pled his case through the media for the last several months, never denied that the offer was made and/or that he rejected it. That’s top CB money, and it wasn’t enough for Dunta. No other team would’ve offered him that kind of money prior to the season, coming off that injury.

Dunta proceeded to sit out all of OTAs and almost all of training camp. He reported to camp about a week before the regular season and was promptly reinstalled as a starting CB. Instead of shutting up and playing, Dunta wrote “Pay Me, Rick!” across the back of his shoes, which further alienated him from the fan base that used to love him so much.

And then, worst of all, he’s been horrible all year. Might has well have a bullseye on his back. He’s clearly lost a step, which is to be expected, considering the injury he suffered. But he also somehow forgot how to tackle, which used to be his strongest skill.

Dunta blew it. He’ll never get the kind of money he was offered by the Texans during the offseason. The Texans won’t offer it to him, and I can’t imagine any other team will. Every snap he plays saps his earning potential a little more.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Oh and a trade offer

Dunta Robinson for Reggie Nelson. However, it seems that the Texan fans feel that they’d be winning that deal by a landslide so I’ll raise the stakes. In addition to the player swap, the Jaguars may select the hottest Houston Texan cheerleader to become a Jacksonville cheerleader. Deal?

Have the Texans any injured key players

Other then who are on IR?

What do you think about the recent second half collapses?

ANy prediction to the game on Sunday?

Life without knowledge is death in disguise

by Zoltan from Budapest on Dec 1, 2009 10:24 PM EST reply actions

Key Injuries?

The ones on IR are the killers, but outside of that…not really. Mario (Williams) has a dinged up shoulder and that’s probably the nagging injury that’s most hindering.

As far as the second half collapses go? It’s the sign of a team that loses focus. It’s nothing uncommon to see the Texans either come out flat and finish strong or start dominant and fade away. Whether that is due to being young, being out-adjusted at the half, getting lazy in the halftime locker rooms, or what is your guess as good as mine. I know in the last game it seemed that the Texans panicked when the Colts came back. It’s frustrating to know you can play with anyone in the league for 30 minutes – not 60. The NFL is harping “Play 60,” but it’s too bad for us that the players don’t listen.

Prediction? Well, these teams usually split the series, but the Texans may be more inconsistent than the Jags. That said, the story of these Texans is that they draw the fans in only to break hearts at the end. What draws fans in? Winning through week 17 (completely feasible with Seattle, St. Louis, and Miami to follow this game) and losing to New England.

My mind says Jags win 24 – 20. My heart says the Texans begin fishing for their fans with a 31 – 23 win. Sunday should be a close game, as is the norm in this series.

by TexansDC on Dec 1, 2009 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

The only one I can think of right now is Duane Brown.

Apparently he injured his knee on the onside kick at the end of the Colts game on sunday. Im pretty sure he is day-to-day right now but ive heard he could miss the game on sunday. As for why our franchise left tackle was on the field for an onside kick is beyond me, but I bet Kubiak has a great reason why.

IMO, the recent second half collapses have been a combination of both coaching and players playing poorly. The Texans have struggled to “Play 60” this season and usually its only 30 min that they play. That is a coaching issue to me, but there have still been huge playing errors that can be blamed like Schaub’s 2 pick 6’s, Kris Brown’s 2 missed FG’s to tie, and Chris Brown/the O-line’s 2 goal line failure’s early in the season.

Chester Pitts.

Huge impact on our running game IMO.

About the recent second half collapses, it doesn’t always occur for us in the second half. The Texans only play 2 quarters of football every sunday so pray to durga that they choose to play the first half. Because if our team looks like a giant ball of suck in the first half, it means that the second half and the game is in our hands.

by Jordann on Dec 2, 2009 12:02 AM EST up reply actions

Owen Daniels by far in my book

There has been a clear drop off in offensive production since OD went out. On the other hand, the running game sucked with Pitts in this year, and it has sucked since he got injured. The pass protection has been good with or without Pitts. Losing Brisiel has been underrated in my opinion too, but maybe thats just because Pitts was already out.

by TexasHoosier on Dec 2, 2009 12:24 AM EST up reply actions

I base this on absolutely nothing, but I think once Briesel went down our running game would have gotten better if Pitts was healthy. OD was a hugemongous loss though.

by Ewdtrey on Dec 2, 2009 3:20 AM EST up reply actions

Oooh...

Ice Cream? I love Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream.

Weakest link? As a player? It’s starting center Chris Myers. I’ve never seen a center get beat so many times.

I may be a newer BRBer, but it’s been on record that I’d consider trading up (pending on the cost) for FS Eric Barry. He’s a special talent and this team could use a ball-hawking FS who could man up occassionally. If not then I hope the Texans take a CB. With Sims-Walker and Reggie Wayne 4 times a year…you need someone who can cover.

AFC South Rival I hate the most? I don’t like Bud’s team. I wasn’t an Oiler fan, but I just don’t like them.

-TE’s. We need more TE’s! Im hoping that we draft like five TE’s come April coz that would be awesome! But of course it has to be a TE that can play multiple positions.

-Terrence Cody but I dont think we have a shot. Any player that can improve the secondary and i’ll consider it a win.

Some draft pundits have Cody falling into the late stages of round 1

While he is a great run stopper and a big body, his pass rush is nearly non-existant which does make him a bit of a liability if you wanna do 4 man pass rushes.

Andre is the START OF THE WEEK!!!!!!!!

Mike-I just hope for a good game with a TD catch

By the way how is Connor Barwin doing. We were so high on him here before the draft; and we were a bit jealous that the Texans picked him. SO?

Re: Barwin

He’s got two sacks, one of which came last week against Peyton. Barwin’s a work in progress. He only had one year at DE in college, so he’s still pretty raw, and he’s admitted he’s got a whole lot to learn. I think it’s fair to say that we’re all optimistic about what he can be in a year or three; he’s just not there yet.

In terms of what you should expect tomorrow, you’ll see Barwin on third down passing situations for sure. I’ve noticed that he’s even starting to get in, albeit occasionally, on other down and distances as well. Still not a four down player though.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
