Ask a Colt fan(s)
Greetings Jaguars fans. Seems like ages since our two respective teams met in Week One of the NFL season. since then I think both clubs have certainly surprised the NFL. I don't think many people figured the Colts would be undefeated going into this Week Fourteen game, and I don't think many thought the Jaguars would be sitting in the #6 spot in the AFC playoffs, fighting to fend off the Dolphins and Jets.
This FanPost is so Colts writers from Stampede Blue (myself, shake n bake, etc.) and Colts fans who read and contribute at Stampede Blue can answer your questions about the team. One question I can answer for you right off the bat is that Colts coach Jim Caldwell does plan to play his starters even though the game is essentially meaningless to the Colts. The Colts also listed 29 players on their injury report after the grueling and physical Broncos game this past Sunday. Because of injuries, the Colts are sort of forced to play their starters because... well, there's no one left to field a team.
While we all all love and respect the rivalry between these two teams, please keep the questions clean, intelligent, and on the topic of football. We're not here to trash talk. We're here to talk about the game. Looking forward to your questions.

OT (either side, but preferably left), Charlie Johnson would be better off at RT and Ryan Diem at RG. Depending on who they resign MLB or S could be big needs. A stud Guard or DT could work too.
RG Kyle DeVan, he’s better than the guy he replaced midseason, but he’s still a guy that was last playing football in AFL2. Runners up RT Ryan Diem and (on his bad days) Pierre Garçon.
Might be the Texans for me just because of the experiences with their fans. With nobody all that up this year the real hated rivals are outside the division (Pats/Chargers)
These are all the starters (or DL rotation guys) that wouldn’t have practiced yesterday in the Colts estimation
Joseph Addai (knee), Gary Brackett (foot), Raheem Brock (back), Melvin Bullitt (shoulder),Kyle DeVan (shin), Ryan Diem (hamstring), Eric Foster (back), Pierre Garçon (knee), Anthony Gonzalez (knee), Kelvin Hayden (knee), Charlie Johnson (foot), Peyton Manning (glute), Robert Mathis (quad), Daniel Muir (hamstring), Jerraud Powers (Hamstring), Clint Session (calf), Reggie Wayne (foot).
Gonzalez is almost certainly not playing. Muir, Powers and Foster’s injuries are new. The rest are injuries that they played with last week. Of those guys I’d say Robert Mathis is the most likely to sit because he was pretty ineffective against a guy he should have embarrassed.

OK.
1. Same as Shake, OT, and maybe LB and S. I’ll have a much better grip on that after free agency starts.
2. Ryan Diem by a landslide. He can’t seem to pass or run block effectively anymore, and now he’s committing multiple false starts a game. I wish we had someone to put in his place at RT, but we really don’t.
3. I’m not good with college players. I typically get favorites by reading other people’s favorites.
4. Good question. I can’t say the Jags because of how long it’s been since playing you guys. Having trouble building up any good hate. So, I’ll have to say that it’s tied between the Titans and Texans. Titans for their classless players, Texans for their classless fans.
5. Do you consider Gonzo or Brown a usual starter? Those are the sure-things. Otherwise, my bet is on either Powers or Addai. They were both banged up really hard, with Addai being broken in half like a toothpick twice in last week’s game.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Finals suck.
- OT. Other than LG Ryan Lilja, there is not a single person on the line that I want starting 3 years from now. LT Chrlie Johnson is a pretty decent guard, but not a franchise tackle.
-It was RG Mike Pollack, which is why he is on the bench now, so it’s probably RT Ryan Diem. He’s not horrific, but he’s not good either.
- Rd1. Anthony Davis OT Rutgers. Instant starter at RT. Power in the run game. If he is gone Jason Fox OT Miami. Eventually replacement at LT allowing Johnson to move inside.
-Rd2. Myron Lewis S Vanderbilt. Listed as a FS but big enough to play SS. Melvin Bullit has been good, but is a classic over-achiever and has limited athleticism. Lewis would be an upgrade.
-Rd3. Quan Studivant LB North Carolina. Tyjuan Hagler has been good at SLB when healthy, but that isn’t very frequent. Philp Wheeler has been a disappointment.
-Hate the Texans fans the most. Biggest rival as been Tennessee. But the team I hate losing to the most is the Jags.
- lol…All of them. Well, we know LB-Hagler, CB-Jackson, WR-Gonzo and RB-Brown are all out. I would also expect CB-Powers, CB-Lacey, and LT-Johnson sit out. DE-Freeney, DE-Mathis, S-Bullitt, RB-Addai and probably Manning are likely to see very limited snaps if any… Oh, and I almost forgot Bob Sanders was once considered a starter, so add him to the list if you want.

I'd give Wheeler some more time
Remember that Session started very slow each of the last two years.

I realize that...
That’s why I used the word “disappointing” as opposed to something more definitive. I was a big Wheeler fan when they drafted him, but it is undeniable that he is one of the weak points of the defense right now. Using a 3rd round pick on a LB who will push for playing time seems only prudent.

Thanks for answering our questions
Do you wanna go for 16-0 or you want no risk; and rest the key players on Thursday?
Are any area of concern with the ’09 Colts?
Would you like the Jaguars in the playoffs instead of Steelers/Ravens/Titans/Jets/Dolphins-and if yes would you be mad if the Colts would “let win” the Jags on TNF?

If it was up to me I'd hold out some key guys that are still recovering from injury
and play normally besides that the rest of the year.
Injuries. The secondary was overwhelmed by injury last week. They couldn’t get anyone better than their dimeback against Brandon Marshall because so many people were hurt.

Jags in the post season
I’d love to see the Jags in the post-season. It might sound rude, but I feel like if we got a lead, it would be hard for the Jags to come back. Especially considering how much Garrard has been abused in the backfield the last few games. I really don’t know what to expect on Thursday night from the Colts, but I can’t see them trying to engineer a loss. The players have worked too hard and are too close to perfection to deliberately lose. Whoever is out there will give their all.
The only teams I really don’t want to play in the postseason are the Dolphins and Houston. The Dolphins are a different team without Ronnie Brown, but we took advantage of their inexperienced secondary when we played them in week 2. At this point, 15 minutes of total offense would not be enough.

Yes but the Colts D is 100% stronger and all around better than when they played in week 2.

held the Broncos pretty well and they're a solid running O.

by shake n bake on Dec 15, 2009 7:05 PM EST up reply actions
Those offensive lines
are wayyyy different. The Dolphins have a real powerful OL. The Broncos are more of a finesse zone run blocking team. You can stop a the Broncos with speed and good technique.
given the injury report I'm more worried about the Jags passing game
Freeney and Mathis didn’t practice at all, the best pass rushing DT is questionable too with only today practicing. Jerraud Powers is out at corner meaning Tim Jennings will be in the nickel (UGH!).

I'm a big fan of rest.
If we happen to get to 16-0 on the way, then great! I’ll start getting excited about possibly ordering some cool “19-0: The Perfect Season” T-shirts. But if we drop a game, but are more rested and healthy going into the playoffs, then I’ll be psyched, because I want that Super Bowl.
As always, it’s injuries. Yes, this is a recorded message.
In order, I want to face these teams (1 means I want to face them):
1. Jets
2. Titans
3. Steelers
4. Dolphins
5. Jags
6. Ravens
I’m not focused on how the games we play affect other teams’ playoff chances. I’d rather focus on the Colts.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Finals suck.
Hell yes I want to go 16-0! It’s not like 16-0 and a Super Bowl are mutually exclusive. Someone wins the Super Bowl every year (some of whom aren’t even that good.) Only two teams have ever gone undefeated and will always be remembered. Plus, 19-0 has the added bonus of shutting up both the Patriots and Mercury Morris.
Offensive line is a concern. They really struggle in the run game and if they get blitzed I’m worried about protecting Peyton. The other concern is injuries in the secondary. This is the best pass D in the league when healthy, but right now they aren’t even close.
I wouldn’t mind seeing the Jags in the playoffs. Think I would prefer to see the Dolphins or Ravens though. My reasoning is thus, those teams are all good enough to potentially knock out the Bengals in the first round, but not good enough to beat the Colts. The Jets suck and that is basically a free pass for the Bengals. Steelers are good enough to beat the Colts assuming they ever get their crap together. If the six seed wins we avoid seeing the Pats or Chargers until the AFC Championship. Best case for us.

I've got a question:
How is this Jags team different from the one that we saw in Week 1? Approach the answer any way you wish.

Where is the weakness on the Colts o-line?
And does Jacksonville’s youth at DT have the potential to wear down the Colts interior?
The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall.
Vince Lombardi
Weakness is at RT...
Ryan Diem is probably the weakest link at this point in time. Kyle DeVan replaced Mike Pollack at RG and has been playing pretty well. He’s not a world beater by any means, but has certainly been an improvement. LG Ryan Lilja is among the top end of interior linemen in the league right now. Missed all of last year with an injury, but has been very good in ‘09. Saturday isn’t the player he once was, but is still an above average blocker and has a great football IQ. Getting a pass rush against the Colts is tough and up the middle is not really the place to do it. The Jags DTs might have some success in the run game, but that’s also why you don’t see the Colts go between the tackles very often.

Good summary.
Your DT’s probably won’t be the way to go. Work on the edge rushes if you want to get to Peyton, especially the right side.

So have any of those 3 centers
that Polian drafted 2 years ago work out at all ? – Pollack, Justice, ??? I believe.
Pollak (the 2nd rounder) failed at guard, the hope now is that he can convert back to center this offseason/next camp
Justice (the 6th rounder) missed the cut this year after Kyle DeVan (now the starting RG) outplayed him. Jamey Richard (the 7th rounder) backs up all three interior line positions and looks like the best of the bunch.

Update::
NFL Network is reporting that Freeney will play tonight and Mathis is a game time decision.
They may be using the word "play" rather loosly...
I suspect he will see the field, but the number of snaps he takes will be the real question. I anticipate a lot of starters getting limited reps.

Rain worries me
If it pours heavily i see Caldwell pulling the plug and saying goodbye to 19-0, unless simpson or hart have a record setting game.
whenever he's been dinged up this year that's what they've done with him.

that is. haha
I’m personally worried of a change of pace rusher in important situations with a rookie playing at tackle.
