Jags fall to Colts in Thriller: Bye - Bye - Bye... PLAYOFFS!

The title says it all... Peyton can't be beat... Garrard can... End of story...

Offensively, props to Rashad Jennings, MJD, and Marcedes Lewis

Thumbs down to Brock Bolen. He missed to many blocks. Also, Vince Manuwai looked bad again. C'mon man!

My hat off to you all...

This is probably the best game you guys have played all year… Your team played their hearts out and you all should be very proud….

I think

our first game against the Titans was probably our best this year.

great game guys

maybe the Colts took the game so serious because they don’t want to see the Jags in the playoffs.

My problem is

When the O played well-The D was bad; when D come to live; the O died (almost). Can we do both?

That ST TD was baaaaad.
So as Nelson-Sorry Reggie; the coach wanna see you and your playbook-Patience is over.

Congratulation to MJD; Mike Thomas (1st TD in the NFL); and Russell Allen (bye bye Clint ?!)

David is a good QB who will be never be an elite QB. But I don’T blame him. He played well

But this heartbreaking loss ruined my day at it has 18 hours (plus a rewatch the game with the Hungarian commentators)

And one more question: WHY THE O couldn’t play like that on LAST SUNDAY????

I think the biggest

mistakes the coaches made was to not have let Anthony Smith early enough. He played well once he got in there. Probably would’ve meant Nelson wouldn’t have played as much.
2. I think Groves should more early on. We weren’t getting enough pressure early on. I don’t think we sold out against the pass. In other words I wouldn’t have started Ellison over Groves.

oh and also, I'm not sure you all know the pain it causes us Colts fans to watch MJD

knowing that the Colts were just one pick away from getting both him and Addai (Polian said at some point after the draft that they would have taken MJD in the 1st if Addai had been gone, and they would have taken him if he had fallen the one extra pick to them in the 2nd round). Instead we got Tim Jennings (#23, target on numerous 1st down passes tonight), who sucks and we hate him.

The problem is...

You internet fans don’t have a finger on the pulse of the town. So you don’t know. That’s the bottom line. You may think you know, but you don’t. You couldn’t possibly.

Tebow would sell tickets, at least for a year. That’s not good enough. If he sucks it backfires.

Unless Gene thinks that Tebow is the answer as a player with a specific position it doesn’t matter. I don’t think he’s going to draft for marketing. And it makes sense. The town has to support the Team. Not an individual, no matter how much a homegrown hero might mean to said town.

Gators fans are bandwagon fans

If they start to like the Jags because we draft Gators, they will expect the same type of record. When we end up with Reggie Nelson or Derrick Harvey instead of Fred Taylor, well, you already get the picture. We need talent, not hype. Tebow was shown up by a mediocre Alabama quarterback, whatever makes people think he can be like Peyton or Brees escapes me.

by DownTownJax on Dec 18, 2009 12:52 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Bravo

You mean hype is not a replacement for talent? You, good sir, are crazy. Don’t you know that this is the NFL, and just by hearing Tim Tebow’s name DB’s are supposed to shit their pants?

Ignore the hype; look at the results.

by harperslaw on Dec 18, 2009 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

What of the reverse?

Remember when Tebow showed up Bradford? What about Stafford?

The QBs aren’t squaring off against one another. It’s the defense a man has to wrap his mind around, understand how to diffuse it, dissect it. That’s what makes a great QB, the brain.

Save the Tebow remarks, I know what you’re going to say because you’ve written it before. I get it. That horse is dead, boys.
I’m not posting this with the intention of lobbying for the Jags to draft Tim. It’s out of our hands.

I just don’t like seeing people speaking disparagingly against men who do things that they themselves couldn’t hope to. I feel the same for those that are hating on Garrard. And again, save it because I know the reality of our situation. I just don’t understand the point of verbally nuking a guy. I think people who constantly crash upon others in judgment should always exemplify their standard for themselves before applying it to another.

And I know that none of us are NFL QBs, so just take my remarks home with you, apply it to whoever you are and whatever you do. Look to the mirror before you look to your neighbor.

That’s what I think. I could be wrong.

It's not Tebow that I'm against, it's his unquestioning fans

People put way too much emotional stock in this guy. Those of us who point out his downfalls aren’t doing it to make ourselves feel better, we do it to bring the discussion back to reality. We don’t feel like he is the answer and want to make it clear. By the way, Alabama’s Defense was ranked behind Florida’s before the game started. Please just trust the new management of the Jaguars to pick good players. I am not a Tebow hater, I am a Tebow as a first draft pick hater.

Oh, I'll do as a please...

Look, I yield that Tebow may not translate as a QB to the NFL. Many others who support him as a man have as well. He may do excedingly well, or he may fall flat. We’ll see.

It’s in the hands of Gene, no one disputes that. The question is, if by some cruel twist of fate Gene actually drafts Tebow, what will that mean to you? Will you stand by him (Gene) then? Will you support the team? I doubt it. You’ll line up with the rest of those that wish they could, but can only muster hate for those that can and cry your wittle eyes out. You’ll stomp your feet and gnash your teeth. Won’t you?

Fear…
That’s what the venom is about, whether you’ll admit it or not, it’s fear. Fear that it may actually happen. If you’re truly confident that it will not come to pass, aren’t you wasting your time on the subject? Let it go. I love Tebow, but I love the Jags enough to forget him as soon as he dons the jersey of another team.

The fact is, you are afraid. Fret not. Most people are afraid of something. Your phobia is Tim. Good luck with that.

I’ll be excited for my Jags either way. I look forward to April. And I look forward to the game against the Pats. Go Jags! Go Garrard! Go shut up, haters!!!

I'm not okay with this loss

As I’ve said before, I hate to lose. I have that gut wrenching feeling again. We played well until we had two chances to get up on Peyton Manning and put the game out of reach. We went three and out both times, for the first time all game, that was when we chose to not execute and have to punt. We just pissed down our leg when we had that three point lead, and like I said while I watched it, sitting there in the stadium, it came back to bite us in the ass.

Reggie Nelson needs to be replaced this year. I’m getting sick of him being out of position, and then giving sorry ass effort on tackles. He was the final hitter on two plays that turned into touchdowns.

I still love Garrard as a guy, I think the guy has great swag; but tonight I think I came to the realization that, he isn’t the true answer at quarterback. He played great football, just like last year in the Thursday night game, but he blew it when it mattered most, and overshot a wide open receiver. I’m pissed at you right now Garrard, but you’re still my favorite current Jag.

The pass rush, as usual, was sorry.

I’m gonna go try to find a cure to this feeling I get, whenever I lose in anything. So far I haven’t found a cure…

by Bestjagfan on Dec 18, 2009 12:35 AM EST reply actions

Garrard isn't the issue

I’ve watched a lot of bad football being a Colts fan prior to 2000. And I mean the worst. Garrard is an incredible quarterback who plays inside a fairly simple offense. That’s the issue. Garrard doesn’t have four of five options on a play like Manning did. Garrard has two or three. And it’s just easier for coverage to be there when Garrard has to throw. There were a few plays last night where I thought you guys borrowed Payton – one was that ridiculous TD throw where Garrard found the open man over the middle on an all out blitz. That’s what great QBs do.

The pick at the end? Well, that’s as much on the receiver who failed to jump or defense the football as it was on Garrard. Believe me, we’ve seen Manning throw a few picks identical to that one.

by indymike on Dec 18, 2009 9:57 AM EST up reply actions

I Hear Yah Man

I was pissed at Garrard last night. But like you said, once I was able to distance myself from the game, I realized Garrard had his best game of the season. His offensive line still got him killed as usual, but had some times where they put it together and gave good protection. I loved his quickness against the all out zero blitz. Hell of a throw for a quarterback a lot of people say holds on to the ball too long.

Had he not thrown that pick at the end that would have been the best game of his career.

I thought the same thing as Zoltan...

Why can’t the O and the D work well at the same time?

It was a hell of a game… edge of my seat the whole damn time. Exciting for sure. David screwed up at crunch time this week. It’s strange, other weeks he’s crunch-time and sucks the other 3 quarters. This week, he’s hot for 3, and starts losing it late….

Anyway, we can still get in the playoffs, we just need help…. so there’s that.

It's not over

Maybe it’s my optimistic nature but we are far from out of the playoffs. Yes the road is much harder and our rope is much shorter but we aren’t the only team that can have a collapse. We played an excellent game in which I’m proud of our guys. They played with as much heart as you can and displayed some talent in the process. Were not an elite team yet but we are well on our way. It’s not over yet. Obviously it’s not a win and in scenario but I encourage you not to lose hope. What else can you turn to besides looking onto next year? Exactly, nothing. Enjoy the feeling of a meaningful December while it’s here and maybe, just maybe the dice will roll our way and we’ll sneak in. Otherwise be proud of what you guys have in Jacksonville.I’ve been a huge fan ever since I started watching football when I was 7 and the jags just joined the league. I only wish I could go to a game. I’ve lived in a Chicago suburb my whole life and now go to eastern Illinois university. I almost got tickets to the jags colts game in week 1 but I had my first day of school the next day.

Thanks guys. You rock ; )
Number 27 is a hell of a DB.

Can’t blame Gerard as he just about matched the greatest Qb of all time pass for pass. He had 1 bad pass to an open Holt. The INT could be blamed on a mis-timed jump by the receiver. He had the Colts pooping bricks. You totally exposed the Colts weeknesses but those lucky bastards keep marching on. 7 times they have come back in the 4th. they are playing with fire and might be 1 and done in the playoffs.

Jack Del is the man. Your luky to have him. Your O-coord. called a near perfect game. Like everyone else, Clark dominates all LB’s. I’d replace an LB with another safety.

Your not out of it yet. We have the Steelers in Pitt.. The Jets play SD and Miami plays Pitt to name a few potential loses.

The refs call that should have been 4th

led to a touchdown drive, and in the end the colts won due to having those points. No bad ref call + manning being cheap and hurrying up the play (he was even too fast for the media crew!) = Jags win this game.

Rookie mistake. Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Dillard could be doing Holt’s job, but better. Jags are better than their record reflects

I’m and Indy fan,…but also an NFL fan,I just wanted to say that I was really impressed with the Jags O on Thursday night,..and it seems to be the story of the season for the Jags,…another heart breaking loss. The Jags have lost most of their games by just a few points,…they could easily be the one on the undefeated train. The thing I see with the Jags is simply closing out the game when they have the chance,..that is the only thing I can see they need to improve upon, and when they fix that,…you will see their record reflect it.The Jags are a young team, and inexperienced, but that will change next year,…I have alot of respect for you guys, and just wanted to say that you guy’s have a great football team, and one to be proud of.

by FreddyS on Dec 18, 2009 2:19 AM EST reply actions

I disagree

I think this team’s record is exactly reflective of their level right now. They’re still in the middle of rebuilding and a group of such young players should be proud to be 7-7 and also proud of a heartfelt performance on national TV.

Yeah thanks

but I think we are at BEST a 8-8 team. We bring the hell to the Colts (but the end always losing-well mostt of the time; not allways) We need things to fix (passrush; a safety who can tackle; Offense and Defense played great AT THE SAME TIME; ) and then the jaguars will be a contender. We need 1-2 years and Gene Smith’s (our version of Bill Polian?) wisdom and good player policy.

My only sore spot on the game is

the play of Reggie “cant tackle” Nelson. He has to be replaced. His shoulder tapping, maybe I can slap the ball, give 5 yards of cushion, I will never be great, playing style is not meant for the Jaguars. Trade him, cut him, whatever……….just make him go away.

That and David's collaspe in the 4th qtr

he had a great 1st 3 qtrs then turned to dog poo. Inconsitency – thy name is David Garrard.

Reggie Nelson – I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a tackling display in professional football as Reggie has performed this year. There are really no words to discribe.

Looking forward to the next two games. Can David bring it again and have a chance to redeem himself? Can the team show some consistency? Vic’s inbox is in trouble.

by DeeMoe on Dec 18, 2009 6:06 AM EST reply actions

We all seem to be in agreement...

Reggie, Reggie, Reggie… You make our defense look embarassing. I try to stand by you man, but another televised event shows your short comings. Was it me or did it seem like some (not many) of those passes to the secondary could have been defended with a hand out?

Other than that – an awsome game. And another thing – I was on the fence about this, but I truley believe that with a little tougher O line, maybe a RB to spell MJD, and a supporting defense, Garrard could take this team deep into the playoffs. I know he gets inconsistant, but last nights game, before the air ride passes (which I think is a confidence problem), he looked better than most NFL QB’s, Rotherlisberger – esque.

Can it happen? What do you think is the window on MJD and David? 2-3 years or more like 3-4 years?

Garrard played great last night up until the end. The more I look at it, the receiver may have mistimed his jump. Either way, it shouldn’t have been thrown as a jump ball. It’s so easy to have passes sail on you.

Sorry but

GREAT QB’s aren’t that easy to come by. 31 points should be enough and Garrard made a lot of very good plays along the way.

How long has Tampa been trying to draft a new QB ? How many other teams have drafted guys in the first round who’ve turned into nothing ?

While I totally agree we need to draft a QB for the future, I certainly hope we don’t replace Garrard for the next 2-3 years. I really don’t feel like starting over again and even if you draft a winner, that’s what you’re doing when you start a rookie at QB.

I mean would you rather have Sanchez ? They have a better defense and they’re not winning either. Matt Ryan has played great. No playoffs for them either. Flaco might get BAL to the playoffs… Stafford ? Nope. Tampa has been looking for a QB for years. So has MIN, WAS, OAK, CLE, KC, SF… the list of teams needing a QB is long. And many of those teams would LOVE to have a guy only as good as Garrard as the QB.

by pksiv on Dec 18, 2009 8:41 AM EST up reply actions

+1,000,000

It kills me how people don’t see this logic. Yes, we need to draft a franchise QB. Every team is looking for a franchise QB. I bet even the Colts are looking for one. Manning won’t play forever. How many QB’s are drafted in the first few rounds every year, and how many of them turn out to be better than Garrard? (We have a very good backup QB IMO as well) I am proud of Garrard despite the dissappointing ending. Like the Colts haven’t done this to every other team they have played or something. All Jags fans should be grateful for Garrard.

by Conservative on Dec 18, 2009 9:18 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly. Draft a guy in the later rounds and continue to ride your better than average QB for a few more years. Garrard isn’t elite, but last night he showed me he is better than average. I can promise you one thing, Brady Quinn or Jamarcus Russel wouldn’t have had the team anywhere near close to the Colts in the fourth quarter.

BYE BYE REGGIE

Think about how embarrassed Reggie Nelson must feel this morning. With the whole country and players from all other 30 NFL teams watching and to see that effort. Seeing him for the first time this year, what would you think. I just watched the highlights on the NFL network. The Clark TD was the worst tackling effort I have ever seen. Extend your arms, head across the chest and wrap up. Your supposed to be a professional.

by Slawsc on Dec 18, 2009 8:33 AM EST reply actions

by Ewdtrey on Dec 18, 2009 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

Not from a lack of effort!?

Are you kidding me! Did you see his “effort” at trying to tackle Wayne on that bomb pass? Hell I’ve seen high school CB and FS make more of a serious effort. Watch the play, he GAVE UP ON THE TACKLE!!!! Look at the shoulder bump he gave Clark, which in turn gave Clark the TD, I have three words for that OPEN FIELD TACKLE!!!!!!!!!!! It is football 101, wrap your damn arms around the guy and drag his ass to the ground. Nelson needs to go, trade in the off season cut him, bench him, I don’t care, he has been playing like crap ALL year. For every ‘good’ play he makes there are 4/5 terrible plays along with a dozen half efforts. I’m just grateful that other people are seeing his crap level of play.
Oh and for those of you that like calling for heads after a loss is too much, well watch game tape of Nelson ALL season and ALL last season, then you will understand.

If you guys could figure out a way to bottle whatever extra juice it is you bring against us every season and use it before every game, you’d win ten games easily.

So, because you guys played a good, tough game, you’ve been upgraded from the Jacksonville Dumpster Fires to the Jacksonville Sparkle Kitties. Get a playoff spot, and we may upgrade you to Jaguars. Get blown out by the Patriots, and you’re back to Dumpster Fires. Have a good season! :)

Tough game guys. Some observations as an impartial (I mean other than hating the colts) observer.

1. Despite losing Garrard continues to look better. He did this in the Houston game and I saw it again last night. He extended plays AND made some really nice throws under pressure while being hit. He is really making a case for himself.

2. MJD, as always, is a little ball of death and iron. Man that guy is good.

3. The Colts can’t lose apparently. Honestly, every game SOMETHING wierd (as in Notre Dame wierd) happens and the Colts find a way to win. Maybe it’s just their year.

4. You are NOT out of the playoff hunt, yu are just IN the hunt as opposed to IN the playoffs.

5. Overall the Jags have impressed this season considering what the expectations were for this team at the beginning of the year. You have to be happy with that.

Offense dies after 30 points.

Disregarding the kick return and Nelson not playing like a Cover 2 safety….good teams get it done in crunch time.

We had 4 chances to beat the Colts. During the second half I saw the Colts daring us to run putting 8 even 9 in the box. If your QB can’t make the D pay then somewhere down the line you need to find someone else. I am not blaming Garrard but on several plays he overthrew WRs (Sims-Walker) wildly (Thomas) and almost had the ball intercepted on a number of occasions. It wasn’t like he didn’t have any time or that he had guys all in his face. So you know what I take it back —I do BLAME Garrard.

When you get 4 opportunities to beat a team and close the game you need to have someone do it and Garrard can’t. He showed the exact same thing last week. Numerous times we got the ball back with plenty of time and nothing.

Vic is wrong saying Touchdown Bomb beats Jaguars. No the Jaguars beat the Jaguars as usual.

by Slvrgun on Dec 18, 2009 10:55 AM EST reply actions

While I agree

our defense actually stepped up a bit late in that game. In the first half I figured the Colts would score 50 if we gave them the ball enough.

I was SHOCKED twice at the end of the game First, when we punted with 2min+ left. and Second when our defense actually made a stop. I guess with the sack it was like 4th and 30 or something but I still never imagined we’d be able to keep them from running out the clock.

Sometimes you have to find enjoyment in the little things.

by pksiv on Dec 18, 2009 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

Keep in mind

during a lot of those chances, Garrard was let down, by either MJD false starting, Holt not jumping for the ball, Mike Thomas not lining up correctly erasing a 19 yard completion to Marcedes with teh game one the line, or that Zach Miller dropped a would be first down on a great pass under pressure. The point is, just because it’s the 4th qtr it doesn’t mean it isn’t an 11 man team.

Guys, 9-7 (as long as the other 9-7 team is not the Dolphins) can still get us in based on conference record as long as no one in the wild card hunt is 10 – 6. by Murlock22 on Dec 18, 2009 12:07 PM EST reply actions

Wrong

Garrard played above average, and amongst QB’s that have played every game this season or last season, he is being paid below average. He’s paid more than crappy players like Fitzpatrick, Freeman(Crappy right now at least). Wow I’m surprised it’s even that few.
Look at this list of players that are giving less value for their paycheck:
Jake Delhomme, Jay Cutler, Palmer, Derek Anderson, Brady Quinn, Tony Romo, Matt Stafford, Matt Cassel, Chad Pennington(Hurt, but availability is the best ability), even Big Ben(Who’s played well, but twice as well? How many 4th qtrs has he won this year? I know he’s lost about 5 with a chance to win.), Could argue Vince Young who’s only played half a season, Kerry Collins who’s not even starting last year but was a pro bowl fav last year, Jason Campbell, Jamarcus Russell, Matt Hasselback, Mark Bulger, Eli Manning.
Now which list looks longer?
Almost every single QB that is performing better than he is, is getting paid more than he is. And not just a little more. Big Ben 40 mill more, Rivers 40 mill more, Eli 40 mill more, Peyton 35 mill more, Donovan McNabb shorter contract but getting paid 50% more per year, Favre 5mill more per year.
Brees and Shaub are the only QB’s being paid evenly with Garrard and performing better, and in both cases they are obviously being underpaid.

Except I would have to say that Matt Stafford is worth what the Lions paid. Watch the replay of the Cleveland game and he’ll make you a believer. The rest of the team…. that’s a different story.

i really dont know where u got ur numbers but garrands numbers are poorly even with a strong running game and here u can look at his payroll.

Just take the last game. his 4th quarter performance was terrible. how many receivers did he overthrow???

This may make me sound stupid, but

Reggie sucks, yeah, but I think I know what he was thinking going for the strip instead of the tackle. If the Colts have 1st and Goal at the 9 and 5:00 left on the clock they could easily milk a couple of minutes before hitting Clark in the end zone (again). I think he thought “I’ll go for the strip, maybe I’ll get lucky and surprise Reggie Wayne, but if not it will give our offense 5:00 to go 65+ yards for the go ahead score.”

As it was the Jags first drive failed (the Left Guard – I think it was Uche at the time – gave up a sack) it actually gave the Jags a second chance.

That being said, yes, Reggie sucks, and needs to either 1) find a new team or 2) decide I’m not Ed Reed, maybe I should just play within our scheme.

Ignore the hype; look at the results.

Vic mentioned something today that interested me..

besides saying that Gene will definitely fix it in the offseason….

He mentioned that Gene has been bringing in new Safety’s all year and I’m sure if any of them were better than Nelson, even as bad as he’s been, that guy would be playing.

Personally, I expect someone to be given a chance at that role next week.

Anthony Smith

Guy is always in position, despite coming from nowhere before he got on the Jags. Who had heard of this guy before then?

I did

particularly when he guaranteed a win with the Steelers when playing the then undefeated patsies. Got burned deep, but I think he can be an asset as a SS. Still can’t believe the Rams cut him. They obviously made a big mistake considering that their franchise safety is on IR now.

He is the guy Bellichek said "We have played better safeties than him"

T-brack is one of the surprises on defense

The guy comes out to play every game, and he gives our secondary much needed, yet talented depth. Great job T-brack, keep up the good work!

He's not all that

talented really. But he’s good depth, and a try hard guy.
