Q & A with Pats Pulpit
Hello Jacksonville faithful,
it's your friendly, neighborhood Patriots blogger welcoming you to snowy New England. We have a 2 game lead in the AFC East over Miami and need a win in our next 2 matchups (your Jags or next week's Texans) to seal the deal. Our win against the Bills wasn't pretty, but I was hopeful given so many starters were out. Well, maybe I shouldn't be so hopeful; let's hope they heal up. Anyways...
I'm here to answer your questions about my New England Patriots. Fire away.

So is the honeymoon with Randy Moss over or is the drama overblown?
Christian Ponder in 2011! Bring him home Wayne, he can actually play QB in the NFL

Drama's overblown
The drama’s gotten so bad that I’ve stopped listening to local sports radio. But part of it is Randy’s own fault. Everytime his production dips, the MSM pundits simply draw on his book of past failings and rip into him. If it’s not production it’s what he says at press conferences. It’s crazy. Call me a homer, but I’d like to believe he’s honestly trying to do the best for the team. There’s also rumors that he’s playing with a bad back; mid season that came out, but we haven’t heard much since.

Tom Brady
I’ve heard that he has an injured finger, injured ribs, and is starting to drop off in production. Will he be able to perform at a high level in a bad weather game? Also, how long do you think he has left in the league? 3 years? 5? Are there any future prospects behind him?

Brady
Yeah, Mr. Bundchen is pretty banged up. Our recent matchup against the Bills was one of the lowest in terms of production, mostly because of 2 long bombs that ended up as PI’s against Buffalo; aside from that, he’s 55 yards shy of 4,000 yards, but around half his 2007 TD production. I would argue that’s mostly due to a lack of quality targets.
I think Brady will be ok in bad weather; the Pats get to practice in it a lot (Belichick brings them outside during the week). Will it limit production? Most likely.
I think he has about 5 years barring a catastrophic injury. As far as future prospects, current backup Brian Hoyer is untested, but competent. I’d like to see him play a whole game which could happen if we seal up a division title and Belichick decides to rest his starters.

OMG Scotch Brite can go to hell!
Wow that’s an annoying ad.
In other news, Do you feel the weather favors the Pats?
Or do you think that perhaps a running back who is smallish, rock solid, and difficult to tackle (no names) might run all over Foxborough?

I'm thinking
The one about the smallish running back. Man, what’s that guy’s name…

lol
I think bad weather hurts everyone, but we get a chance to practice in it more often; that could give us a slight edge. That being said, I do agree that this could turn into a ground game if the weather gets crazy. That Povich guy could have a good day. ;-)

Sometimes bad weather can limit the ground game, too.
Especially for runners that are cutters. We’ll have to see what the field is like on game day.

Yeah
It can also create slippery grass, MJD has had a case of the slips on grass recently.

I just keep thinking of him as a bowling ball.
Get a head of steam then roll into a ball and slide over the snow like a bowling ball, dropping defenders like so many pins.

Some call
Him a bowling ball, while some call him hercules, except a pocket sized version. Pocket hercules in the flesh.

A big part of that is because
the secondary doesn’t have to respect the deep ball as much and the safeties can play closer to the line of scrimmage.
Does winning make Belichick likable
or has he found a fan base and ownership that understands him?
Big Cat Country!:: The Official Home of the Unofficial Blog of the Jacksonville Jaguars!
I think it's a little of both
Winning certainly makes the fanbase a little more tolerant of his “eccentricities”. But I think he’s absolutely hilarious. I mean, what head coach actually LIKES to get up in front of a crowd of reporters, especially after a loss? Belichick just doesn’t hide his disdain. I can practically script his pressers myself, but I love watching them for the occasional gem:
Reporter: Tell us how the other team came away with the win.
Belichick: They scored more points than us.
I’m not kidding…

I Love His
“I don’t give a shit what you think” attitude. No other NFL coach goes out in a sawed off sweat shirt, sweat pants, and a headband.

He used to get fined all the time for cutting off his sleeves
Then hoodie sales took off and they leave him alone.
Unless you’re someone he respects, he could care less what you think.

Great Thing to have in a coach

What is the problem
with the TEs this year? I think if there is an area where the Jaguars can be beat is that place. What can we expect from Watson and co?
How bad is the defense this year-which is more concern the rundefense or the passdefense?
Any predictions for sunday?

I'll field this.
Baker and Watson have both spent time injured. Add to that a depleted O-line and much of the time they’re in is helping block on the line.
The run defense has been pretty solid up the middle (when Wilfork’s not injured), but they’re having a tough time sealing the edge. The pass defense has been spotty, but overall the defense isn’t giving up tons of points. My biggest complaint is the lack of third down stops.
The last time I gave a prediction was Black Sunday (Pats vs Giants Super Bowl). Never more.

Belichick has been Tim Tebow's personal consultant
Any chance Bill is interested?
Big Cat Country!:: The Official Home of the Unofficial Blog of the Jacksonville Jaguars!
I thin a dumb owner will
pick him. Snyder and his Redskins are my lead candidate. They draft and sign names-and we saw yesterday how bad that could turnout…
I seriously hope we will NOT pull the trigger on him….

Tebow wouldn't spell the doom for jacksonville
We don’t get the gator fans now, and if we didn’t later it’d not make a difference. If we could get him in the third, get any perks, that’d be okay.

Interested?
Maybe if he fell to second or third round in the draft. I doubt he would trade up to get the guy. They haven’t had a first round QB since Bledsoe, and Hoodie got rid of him. He has drafted many low round QB’s.

What are your Draft Needs?
Who is the weakest link on your offense?
Who do you want the Pats to target specifically in the Draft?
Which rival do you hate the most?
What is your take on the Pats drafting successes, especially in getting 2nd round picks?
"HULU: An evil plot to destroy the world. Enjoy"
Driver of the "Cut Reggie Nelson" Bandwagon.
There are many answers to this.
Draft needs: Pass rushing OLB for need, receiver depth (at least 1 burner), at least 1 O-line guy for depth, running back.
Weakest link on your offense: Lack of a true #3 receiver. Moss is great (double teamed all the time), Welker’s great (open most of the time with great hands), and then the cupboard’s bare. Not enough targets. Sam Aiken is a special teams captain who fills a role. Edelman is a converted QB with a broken arm. Stanback is a converted QB (haven’t seen him much), and Tate is on IR. Two big targets and nothing.
Who do you want the Pats to target specifically in the Draft? third receiver and potential replacement for Moss (not that there is another Randy Moss). Having said that, Hoodie drafts for value over need, so who knows what we’ll get.
Which rival do you hate the most? Easy, the Jets. The coach talks trash, the team talks trash, the fans talk trash all the time. I can respect just about every other team, but I can’t respect that.
What is your take on the Pats drafting successes, especially in getting 2nd round picks?
Future picks (often devalued) and numerous picks have been important to the Pats of late. I guess the way I look at it is fishing. You can drop your hook one at a time and hope you get the one you want, or you can drop a net and get a bunch of them and sort them out later. That is the scheme of late. If you have five picks, then you need to hit on the majority of them. If you have ten picks, you can withstand more misses.

In addition to the "net" idea...
…The value of a player in the bottom 5-10 of the 1st round, which is where the Pats are perennial pickers, is nearly the same as the players in the top half of the 2nd round, AND the 2nd round players come cheaper. Instead of getting 1 really good player for X amount of dollars, we get 2 really good players for the same X amount of dollars.

At least until they come up with some sort of a rookie salary cap.
A lot of brand new millionaires that can’t cut it in the NFL. Pretty much a crap shoot.
