Well for the third consecutive week the Jaguars blew an opportunity to all but lock up a playoff spot. Yet somehow the Jags have not been eliminated from the playoffs and scenarios do exist in which Jacksonville will play in the postseason. Here's the AFC Wild Card standings after week 16 (Overall records first, Conference records second):
- Baltimore Ravens (8-7) (6-5)
- Denver Broncos (8-7) (6-5)
- New York Jets (8-7) (6-5)
- Houston Texans (8-7) (5-6)
- Pittsburgh Steelers (8-7) (5-6)
- Jacksonville Jaguars (7-8) (6-5)
- Miami Dolphins (7-8) (5-6)
Now in the event that the Jaguars beat the Browns next Sunday (cough cough), then Miami is instantly eliminated due to the Jaguars conference record. Yes the Dolphins have the head to head tiebreaker, but there would have to be a large crowd of 8-8 teams for the Dolphins to get in and in that case the head to head is eliminated.
So assuming that the Jaguars win, here's the situation:
- Baltimore Ravens (8-7) (6-5)
- Denver Broncos (8-7) (6-5)
- New York Jets (8-7) (6-5)
- Houston Texans (8-7) (5-6)
- Pittsburgh Steelers (8-7) (5-6)
- Jacksonville Jaguars (8-8) (7-5)
If any of the remaining teams are to lose in week 17 now, the Jaguars will own the tiebreaker with their conference record. The top 2 teams make the postseason so if 4 of the top 5 teams lose next Sunday the Jaguars will advance to the playoffs. Here are the Week 17 matchups:
- Baltimore @ Oakland
- Kansas City @ Denver
- New England @ Houston
- Pittsburgh @ Miami
- Cincinnati @ New York
Miami, New England and Cincinnati all seem to be very reasonable wins. Even Kansas City and Oakland don't seem out of the question after the Week 16 performance against a stout Cincinnati and Oakland's past performances at home. Regardless of these scenarios, it all comes down to the Jaguars actually winning a game they need to win. Beat Cleveland and then we can worry about a possible miracle planet alignment.
