Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

What (or who) do you miss most?

This, I suppose, is not really an "article." It is more of a... survey? Discussion, I hope. As I've been watching the Jaguars play the last few weeks a few things struck me. First: This team is different. Much different from teams we've had in the past. And if this off season was any indication, more change will come.  Of course, that happens and it is a good thing (for the most part). It means the team is developing and changing. Staying young and healthy. So I got to thinking of what I missed about the Jaguar teams of the past. Sure, it's only been about 15 years... but the great thing about that is that I was able to share every year with this team, unlike many people my age (early twenties). Most people hear so much about the past of their team that they never experienced. I have had the privilege to experience every (well, most every) moment of this team's history so far. And I do miss a few things...

I miss watching Fred Taylor run. I love Maurice Jone-Drew as much as anyone, and he certainly is exciting. But for me, watching Fred run the ball was captivating. And honestly, I think my favorite year was 07 for him. Watching his power, speed and fluid movements. I miss Fred.

I miss Donovin Darius' hits. We've had the chance to see some good hits from Alexander this season, but Donovin... every game I watched with him playing I couldn't wait to see the hit that I knew he would put on somebody. Remember that clothesline tackle he put on a Green Bay player? Dirty hit - low point of his play, but I remember it.

I miss Jimmy Smith's fluid movements... the way he made everything seem almost easy. I remember that when he'd catch a pass or get a TD... after the play he'd get up as if it normal or expected. A remember a few times when he'd get a touchdown, drop the ball and walk to the sideline. Yeah, it was a touchdown, but it was to be expected, right?

I miss Stroud and Henderson's first three years together. Wow - I remember that first season, and my oh my. Those two had me pumped. They were to statues in the middle of the field - two giants.

I miss Brunell and his attitude towards the game. He was such a talented QB who loved football and loved this team. I miss watching him throw the ball. I was heart broken when we didn't keep him on.

----

So... yeah. I miss more, yes, but those are some of the top things. Now, don't get me wrong - I love our Jags. I can't wait to see what the team will look like next year. Derek Cox, Terrance Knighton, Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton offer a chance for a lot of good memories. Think about watching Mike Thomas and Mike Sims-Walker continue to develop, for MJD to continue to shine and for Garrard to keep us excited with his pass/run dual threat. For, hopefully, Derrick Harvey to continue to develop and become and exciting pass rusher. For... well, I could go on and of. To put it simply: I can't wait to get memories of the current team.

So what or who do you miss most of the Jags of the past?

Glad you posted this

I think it is well worth a look back to see why we came to love\like this team. I still wear my authentic Nike white Brunell jersey. I’m rare, but I am a fan of the all whites. The think I miss most, that you noted, is Stroud\Henderson. They defined the defense and brought a confident swagger. Seeing them together seemed to unify things.

The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall.

This is not really something i miss but......

One of the moments in recent Jaguar History that i cherish and I remember the most is the time when wearing the all black uniforms JDR stood on the sidelines wearing a suit. That was pure class!!.

Someone I REALLY miss (with al respect to Mel) is Mike Smith. That guy is a hell of a coach and person, I have the joy of knowing him personally and he´s great (No wonder players always stood up for him).

Good luck

Trying to generate conversation. I think putting that in a post makes people actually not comment.

The three thing I miss the most...

… are the “Thunder and Lightning” days of Smith and McCardell, the “Twin Towers” Stroud and Henderson, and of course Freddy T. I miss seeing him back there a LOT.
One person I’m really having fun watching now is Mike Thomas. Don’t get me wrong, I think there are several new guys that are REALLY making big plays, but I can’t help but get on the edge of my seat every time Thomas touches the ball. That guy is electric! I think he is going to be a HUGE staple in this offense for a long time.

I Wouldn't

Call him electric just yet. He hasn’t had a play longer than about 20 yards. I see what your saying though; in a few years he will be the most explosive player playing receiver.

Most explosive receiver

On the Jaguars, that is…
