End of an Era: Fred Taylor Released
Fred Taylor: 10 Years of Memories
[Note by River City Rage, 02/16/09 2:05 PM EST ] Michael Wright reports that Fred Taylor offered to take a paycut, but the team rejected:
"We offered to take a pay cut, but their decision was made," Taylor told Wright. "They wanted to go young was their reply."
The Jacksonville Jaguars released running back Fred Taylor today. Fred was due for a 6 million dollar salary and could not come to an agreement about restructuring for the future. Fred Taylor is as close to an iconic player in Jaguars history and his absence puts a strange twist on the 2009 season.
I'll have more complete thoughts later, right now, I'm simply stunned.

He's been slighted... his pride is hurt, he won't come back.
This is a blow to his ego and I can’t imagine he’ll come back for less money now that he has been cut. He’s more likely to join an AFC south rival than play for the Jags again…
REMORSELESS AND COLD… That’s how I like my GM’s…. but I hate this move…

Fred Taylor as usual....
handles the situation like a humble man. My respect for #28 has grown with each year he has played. It’s a sad day but I only have great wishes for Taylor, where ever he plays. (please God, not the Patriots!) I understand the Jags decision and we can only wait to see how the season unfolds before we can judge the move. Also, if Fred joins a team that is closer to winning it all, maybe he can get a ring and a well deserved shot at the HOF.

With his
below average catching skills he wont end up with the Patriots, and his pass blocking isn’t great either. Well at least there wont be any controversy with him wanting to workout somewhere else in the offseason.

He would fit well there
He’s a cut back runner so he will work well in a zone blocking scheme. Not to mention all their backs usually get a high ypr. I just wonder if he would start there…. Slaton the better pass catcher would almost have to play on third downs as a change of pace guy, but is Slaton good enough in pass blocking?

I think thats why we let him go...
we have a long road rebuilding ahead of us and he deserves to go to a championship caliber team and win a ring.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
WHY? WHY?? I’m Stunned. For what? They just release the best player of the franchise like that? Right now, I simly cannot accept this.
The front office just ruined my day (maybe my week)

Sad...
I’m sure we all hope the best for Fred Taylor. He was not only my favorite player since Brunell, but was my favorite guy on the team. Great leadership skills. The best kind, which is to say, lead by example. #28 will be missed greatly in that respect, but I agree in getting younger in the backfield. It’s obvious that Taylor’s best days are behind him, and as a Jaguars fan, we must look ahead. We are so fortunate to be able look to MJD to take Fred’s place. Good luck Fred, I also hope the gets a legit chance at a Super Bowl ring and the HOF. He deserves it!

1 more thing
I know the emotions speaking about me right now (sorry for that) but after this move, the the front office must prodoce a superb draft/FA. I know MJD is the present, I know Fred played here this year a back-up, but when the team has more wholes than a cheese, and they cannot reached a deal, why cannot paid his signing bonus(1 million, after Porter and Florence leaves 24 million waste money, Fred deserved that 1) and at least try to trade thim for picks(as I see half of the league can use him) for god sakes???

Well I can't say I'm stunned
but I am sad. I’m not going to say the organization just destroyed the team because I hate to say it, but I think this was probably the better move for the team moving forward. All I hope is that Fred plays for a high profile team next year (hopefully in the NFC) and people ca truly appreciate what a gifted and special running back he is when he plays on a national stage that he couldn’t get in Jacksonville.

I was shocked...
but we’ve all known it was coming. So did Fred. Vic’s been saying Fred would have to take a pay cut for months, and Fred’s no dope. He knew it too. Fred’s a classy guy, and I wish him all the best. Hopefully he can find a good line to get behind and pull for another 1 or 2 thousand yards, or even a SB. After toiling away his best years in the Teal-media-black-hole, hopefully he can get somewhere and get some attention.
I just hope he doesn’t do what Edge James did and get behind a nothing line that was on the build.

Arizona
I would love to see him with AZ. They will be a Super Bowl favorite and along with some help on Defense, they could use a veteran RB like Fred. Although as I write this, I remembered they will be on the Jags home schedule next year… YIKES! We all know how Fred runs when there is just that little bit of extra motivation…

IT'S A BUSINESS...
Yes, I hate to see Freddy T go, he was great when he was here and he is truly the greatest Jaguar yet… HOWEVER, it is a young man’s game and it’s a business. Now im sure the titans didn’t want to let Eddie George go years ago, but it was a business decision and it had to be made. Freddy T still has a little left in the tank, however not enough worth $6million… Now, how much of a pay cut was he willing to take? Who knows and we may never know… But we do know that this team is going in a different direction and that is without Fred Taylor…
Fred Taylor… ‘98-’08… Thank you for all the memories…

I agree...
We have to trust the team here on the decision. I’m sure this decision was made by commity, including the likes of JDR, Gene Smith, Fred Taylor, and most importantly, Wayne Weaver. They would not just release a guy like Fred Taylor without being absolutely sure it was the best thing for the team. I am confident that if Taylor was willing to take a pay cut that Weaver would have done almost anything and everthing to make that happen, outside of a move that would hurt the team.

Chris, I just read your edit...
and now like Rufio, I must retract what I just posted. If this is true, Fred was willing to take a cut and the Jaguars weren’t willing to negotiate, that changes my opinion on things. That would be just wrong!

After the Jaguars
just thrown 24 million to Porter and Florence, Fred, who actully DID VERY MUCH to this team, didn’T worth 3 million. I know that it is a tough economical envirorment, but everybody says, The jaguars has enough cap room, money no problem, and the salary cap will be gone, so i don’t uderstand that side. And about his has little left at the tank, I see last year he could produce still in a good level. I think he know well, that if he stayeed for 09, he will be MJD’s backup, and i guess, he agree with that role for the money he wanted for it. It doen’t make me sense now…
I think i go outside to shovel some snow. Maybe I will chill down….

Very sad...
if this really is the case and the Jaguars were not even willing to negotiate, but this is still one side of the story. Has anyone heared and official release from the team yet? Any quotes from Weaver and Co.? I just can’t imagine Weaver going on the Jacksonville local news and saying, “yea, Fred was probably one of the greatest here in Jax, but he’s too old to play and we didn’t even want to make a deal the the best leader on the team, even though he was willing to take a pay cut. We felt he would be better somewhere else.” That would just make no sense that they would treat Taylor like that after all he has done with and for the team.

Chicago Jaguars fan
I have been a fan of the Jaguars ever since they became an NFL franchise. I can remember being a kid at watching Mark Brunell and Fred Taylor playing in the playoffs or against the Colts (being from Chicago I usually do get the Colts games).
One my best memories of being a Jaguars fan was seeing them play in Chicago which has been my only pro football game that I have seen in person to this date. But seeing the headline on ESPN today just flat out hurt.
It’s sad that they couldn’t work out a deal, but from my perspective I would love to see the bears pick him up so I can watch one of the NFLs best running backs ever.

This is exactly what a GM has to do
Pay attention to the field, not the sentimentality of fans. I didn’t see this move coming because I didn’t think Gene Smith would be able to be objective and ballsy enough to do this. I was wrong, and I think of it as a good sign that we have a GM capable of doing this.
I hope Fred makes it onto a fantastic team and wins himself a ring next year. I love his loyalty to Jacksonville, but from a career standpoint, Gene may have just done him a favor by giving him a chance to get a few more credentials for the Hall of Fame. Because…I mean…the Jags are not winning the Super Bowl next year.

I agree with all of that but...
damn! We’re talking about Fred Taylor! You can’t just cut the guy. If he’s willing to play the role of a backup and take a pay cut, you must find a way to re-negotiate terms and keep him on this team. Not only a great leader, but the man can still play at a high enough level in the National Football League!
by jagsfanbrunell on Feb 16, 2009 2:25 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It's not a guarantee
If he took a pay cut he’d still be getting a decent amount of money and for all we know he could have nothing left in the tank. If the Jaguars are truly rebuilding than money can’t exactly be going to a backup running back with only a few years left.
by SoCalStites on Feb 16, 2009 2:27 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
There’s no point in even commenting anymore… Everyone is almost Anti- cutting fred and everyone just needs to realize that it was a business decision and if you are not producing HUGE #’s in this league tou are not going to get that high of a salary… not even $4 millon for a backup running back.. I dont care who it is… it was a good “business” decision… If we had continued with the trend we were on, we would have been in serious cap trouble…

Very true...
This recent quote aquired by the Times Union also makes me feel a little better about Taylor… "
Everybody flew down, Mr. Weaver, all of them, and they handled it first class," Taylor said. "That’s part of the game, man. I anticipated this day and that’s just how it goes."

This team is developing it's roots right?
Then the Jaguars need to have 1-2 players like Fred to play here until the end of there career.
Yeah, you must see the NFL as a business right? So if you have the attitude like this, when you have a losing season (or more) who knows, you don’t pay the tickets, because it not worth it, right? No, wrong!!! You go there, because you have some emotion about the team.
And by the way, if Fred will really be a free agent, In my opinion he will be signed on the fastest from our free agent group, maybe in the first day of free agency. Because he not worth 4 million as a backup…

It looks like the plan is to give MJD an extension before the season according to Jags.com
Smith termed the release of Taylor a "well-reasoned decision in the best interest of the organization," and referred to Jones-Drew as "a player we want here into the future. He’s a younger Fred Taylor, in essence."
Also, we will draft Quinn Johnson… mark my words…. Greg Jones will get the ball more next season. I guarantee it, and Quinn will be our FB. I’m calling it now.

Freddie
Very good player. Sad to see him leave Jacksonville. He is a staple of the franchise.
Are the Jags in full rebuild mode? They’ve cut Porter, Florence, and now Taylor. In the span of two years, Leftwich and Stroud were also cut. This team still has no prolific WR or TE, and now half its great backfield is gone. Derrick Harvey is smelling of BUST, and the interior of the D line is not very good.
I’m not writing this to trash talk. I’d like to know if you all think the Jags are junking it all and rebuilding from scratch.

Sadly
He makes good points. Who’s are this teams greatest weapon in offense? MJD, Fred, and maybe Matt Jones (bust he must produce another season like last year) and a real maybe Dennis Northcutt. Greg Jones, good player, but can he be part of a real 1-2 punch like with Fred?? Well…
And now: our list of needs, LT, offensive lineman, DT, Some players for the secondary, WR, A fresh QB, and now a backup QB, or a fullback if Greg Jones will be the back up RB. And we have 6 picks, and we don’t want to spend in FA
Good luck Jags…But my support don’t stop, even in a SAD day like this!

hmmm
First, Stroud wasn’t cut he was traded and call off on Harvey until this time next year.
Anyways, as for being in full rebuild mode, eh. Last offseason the Jags swung big for the fences, and struck out doesn’t even do the 2008 season justice.
Are they trying to now tank the 2009 season? I doubt it, Del Rio knows his job is on the line so I’m sure he’s doing all in his power to make sure it’s a success.

When you root for a team, normally you pick one either cause its the one that’s winning (not the cas) or beacuse its the one closest to you ( the case)…………
But when you take the step from being a supporter to being a fanatic…… it because of different things, my reason was that I liked the way the Jags though, played and acted not only in the field, but in its manaegerial decisions……….
They are no more those jags i fell in love with…….
We learned that giving away shit-high-spotlightteam contracts wasn’t going to work with us, but they just couldnt learn, we learned that giving total control to our HC wasnt the path either, and look whats happening now, we learned that we needed low profile team players, and leave the rest to the spot-light teams……
They simply are repeating the same errors from the past…….
I’ve been sick-patient with this…….
I’m simply stepping off my fanatic status to become a mere supporter of the Jaguars organization………

Quit crying...
Everyone saw this coming. Jaxjags, perk up. It is a emotional situation, but step back from it and take a big whif. The Jaguars are heading in a different direction, cleaning the slate, retooling the team with younger more reliable players. I would have loved to see Fred finish up in Jacksonville, but at least the organization handled it professionally. There is mutual respect for Fred and for the team. Don’t completely let your emotions guide your decisions. I know you are pissed he’s gone, but it is a business. I’ll miss him, wish him the best, but continue to bleed black and teal. Remember when Montana left for Kansas City, San Francisco was completely devastated, but there was a little ole’ guy named Steve Young. The same thing happens to all sports icons as they age. It sucks, but it is a business and they must do what THEY believe is best for the franchise. I continue to unwaiveringly stand behind the Jacksonville Jaguars.

with me aibtureman 100%. I have great respect for Fred Taylor, but you have to realize something everyone. Taylor is getting older and frankly slower. When he did get the ball last season, he didn’t get much out of the run. he only had a few long runs. Part of it may be because of the offensive line, but I saw this day coming. I just want to say to Fred, “Fred (or Mr. Taylor), thanks for everything you have done for the Jags in your 11 years here. You are an upstanding guy and I have complete respect for you, but it’s time to move on.”
Jones Drew, here is your chance to take the spotlight.

ESPN finally gives Fred some credit for his great career this morning. Mike & Mike actually talked about him for about 5 minutes and gave him kudos for his 11000 plus yards. It sucks that it takes being cut to get some attention. I will miss him and Im going to retire my #28 jersey to the wall. This is an emotional time for us fans but we need to stick by the team and the 53 guys that will be on the field next year. I am looking forward to seeing what Greg Jones can do with 10 -13 carries a game.
