The cost of a number 8 draft choice
Last August, when Derrick Harvey was holding out for a huge amount, I posted the following:
Do we need Derrick Harvey at $10 mil a year? Answer that yourself. Should we release David Gerrard to keep him? Should we release Fred Taylor and Mike Petterson to keep him? Should we release Reggie Nelson, Maurice Drew, Justin Durant and Reggie WIlliams to keep him?
Gene Smith is clearing out payroll for the high cost of this years draft and to keep some quality players. Maurice will get a new contract, that is certain. David will be paid. A new #8, assuming we stay at #8 will carry the same price as Derrick Harvey did. Possibly Sensebaugh gets retained. The bills will come due.
Others are going to go. Reggie Hayward possibly, Paul Spicer possibly. Reggie Williams definately. John Henderson may be traded. The releasing of Fred Taylor is the hangover from the 2008 spending spree. I wish we never got drunk and I wish Fred could finish here in style. It isn't that reallity.
This years spending will cause next year's cutting. Salary cap isn't the issue, revenue verses expense is. The Jaguars are bracing for a tough 2009 economy. The cost of new players means saying good bye. There is no huge source of revenue on the way, not in 2009.
I just wish I could have seen Fred bust it one more time. Those memories will live forever. He was the best player I saw in person. Thank you Fred, good luck!

Fantastic point Terry.... you are right on the money with this assessment.
It’s not about the salary cap, it’s about payroll in general. Wayne wants to cut it back some, this is a bad economy for everyone and I think that any dead weight has to be cut. Fred deserved better, but Gene’s steely gaze and heartless approach won this round.
I really hope Fred doesn’t sign with an AFC south team… please don’t let that happen.

The End Is Nigh...
Yeah, I fear about that too (See V. Carucci says He and maybe the Texans-NO!!!)
Losing Fred as a jaguar hurts. See Fred playing against the Jaguars 2 time a year-nightmare. i hope he goes to Tampa, or Atlanta, or place like that. I guess he wants to play 1 or 2 more years, and if that’s the scenario, then when the AFC and NFC South teams meets once again, he will be out of pro football. I wish him all the best, i wish him the cross the Jim Brown line, and i wish him, to never play against the Jaguars in a regular, or post season game!
Oh, and by the way, good article Terry. I hope in the end, the Jaguars have results(back to the rank of few elite teams for example), otherwise the whole thing will mean more damage….

The only reason I would want him on an AFC South team next year
is so that I could see him one last time next year and say goodbye.

it was a FOOTBALL decision
Why are people on BCC having such a hard time understanding that players skills DECLINE. It happens to everyone. I love FT but we cant keep giving him the ball out of charity.
I predict that we are going to draft a young fast RB to complement Drew and Greg Jones.
huge freddy T. fan
but it was a buseness decision, i dont agree with, but i understand, you will be missed freddy.
