Choose your own Scouting Report: Part Two

Greetings!

So, I know we're all anxiously awaiting the weekend where we can watch strapping young men run around in shorts and t-shirts.  There's simply nothing more exciting than watching future NFL players see how fast they can run or how high they can jump while Deion Sanders and Jon Gruden analyze every single moment.

Now, despite my somewhat mocking take on the combine, it does help us start to shake out the draft order and narrow the focus on players that the Jaguars should keep an eye on.  With that said, I'd like to continue opening up a conversation about who you'd like us to scout here at BCC and what players should be on our radar.

This is my list of players that we've either scouted or plan on scouting.

Wow that's a good looking list.

It’s hard to say that anyone has been left off the list. I wouldn’t mind seeing a Pat White report after how well he played in the Senior Bowl.

Please

Do one on William Beatty? OT Uconn.

by harveyismyboy on Feb 23, 2009 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

Could you do ones on

Eugene Monroe, Antoine Caldwell, Kevin Ellison, and Percy Harvin?

by ajagsbeliever on Feb 19, 2009 1:08 PM EST reply actions

They're on the to do list

Also Friday expect one on Herman Johnson, LSU guard. Also to SoCal, one on Pat White is also on the way

Also Chris, the link to Oher isn't the scouting report I did on him

I hate to be a hassle

but while you’re fixing that link, the link to Jason Smith’s report doesn’t work either.

That one is just a placeholder...

Stay tuned for that one.

Nice Reports

What about doing one on Brian Robiskie or Darrius Heyward-Bey. Also maybe another linebacker like Aaron Curry. I’m looking forward to the report on Aaron Maybin. While I don’t agree with everything Mike Mayock says, he is really high on Maybin and began to compare him to Demarcus Ware.

I would like to see a defensive end or 2

what says they won’t take another DE such as Orakpo or Michael Johnson.

by moneyallday on Feb 19, 2009 9:24 PM EST reply actions

I wouldn't be happy

Sure a defensive end would be fine in the 2nd or later but if they spend a 1st rounder I would not be happy at all. There are much more pressing needs than that position and we have to put our faith in developing the young guys we have right now.

by Adam Stites on Feb 19, 2009 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

BAP, but

If a DE is the BAP, time to trade out of the spot and recoup value.

by MoveThoseChains on Feb 19, 2009 11:53 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

I should’ve specified that I agree with the philosophy Chains just said. I just don’t want the Jaguars to target a DE.

by Adam Stites on Feb 20, 2009 12:14 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah

I would prefer to fix another position, but I would take an upgrade at DE if it was there. A good 3 man DE rotation for the future isn’t the worst thing you can have. You basically need 3 starting caliber DE’s anyhow for depth and for obvious passing downs where you put one in at DT. Hayward is starting caliber, but how for how much longer. Paul Spicer is over the hill already. Harvey is starter quality, and Groves is yet to be determined. I think Goves can be a good starter. He’s actually not that bad against the run. He holds the point and he can get off blocks. I think the reason he doesn’t see the field all that much is because when he tries to speed rush he takes himself out of plays and because he’s a little slower recognizing plays, not to mention the offside penalties.

understandable because of so many holes to fill

but were u upset when in two consecutive years when they drafted a DT with Stroud and Henderson.

by moneyallday on Feb 20, 2009 12:39 AM EST reply actions

I've got two more late round gems coming soon. One of them looks to be one of Tkopa's trancendental players.

Greg Laybourn S Oregon State Univ.
Brandon Godfrey WR Utah (Major reason behind the 13-0 season they had)

Plus I still love Nate Ness S, Arizon
and I did Ryan Chesla TE out of N. Colo.

Is BBC

going to make their own draft board so we can follow it during the draft. Maybe we all should make one for the 1st and 2nd rds and then we can compare and see who was the closest. Just an idea and it might be fun. What do you guys think?

by JagSoldier on Feb 20, 2009 3:24 PM EST reply actions

What kind of draft board

In a month or so all the writers(Chris, Collin, Terry, and myself) will be doing a 2 round mock draft. Or were you talking about something like A “Top 100 prospects” board?

by Jonathan Loesche on Feb 20, 2009 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

I think he means a top 100

You know you/we all could make your/our individual boards using Excel or something and then average the boreds together. If you all care at all I have my own.
You can also use a similar concept with a Mock draft, which I also have. lol

by Ewdtrey on Feb 20, 2009 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

I was thinking

that you guys could create your own board and we can all follow it during the draft. If the guy you have the Jags picking at #8 is picked before then, then we move on to the next name. I want a good idea of who the Jags will go for when they are on the clock. You guys are pretty knowledgeable about college football so I figured you might be able to make a board that can help the rest of us out who dont. I would like a better idea of how it is done on draft day.

by JagSoldier on Feb 20, 2009 4:35 PM EST reply actions

We need to scout DT

The team will DT’s at the top of their board in the second and third rounds. The one guy that needs to be scouted is Sen’Derrick Marks (Auburn). We need to shore up that spot next to John Henderson as Rob Meier and Landri will not cut it!

by kearsney on Feb 21, 2009 3:11 AM EST reply actions

Landri

is the man, but Meier has got to go, IMO. I wonder about Marks. We should really look at the lower rated guys, as the top of this class is weak, but it will still be overdrafted. I think Raji will go higher than he should and Jerry is good, but not what we are missing.

by Ewdtrey on Feb 21, 2009 4:41 AM EST up reply actions

You are thinking NEED and no one in the Jags thinks like that anymore

Expect a linebacker, receiver, center, or defensive back in second round.

Nah, he's saying a DT may well be at the top of their board in the 2nd round

The guy out of Auburn is possible.

When you say a position is at the top of your boards

you are needs drafting, period.

I think the imperative word is, "may."

They are just saying, because we need a DT it might be a good idea to scout DT’s just in case the player of need is also the BAP.
We can’t scout everyone, so we should find some kind of way to narrow down who we look at.
Personally I think we should look at players that will gather the most value because of one reason or another like with the runningbacks. There are a lot of runningbacks in this draft, but not a huge of demand for them so they will fall.
One RB I think will have good value by the looks at peoples mocks is Cedric Peerman. His only problems are he has some problems holding on to the ball and he’s a little injury prone. But he’s a warrior with the ball in his hands. I would for sure draft him in the 4th round.

by Ewdtrey on Feb 22, 2009 5:54 AM EST up reply actions

So much for getting Cedric Peerman

in the fourth round. I thought he was going to be a steal there. He will go higher now that he ran the fastest RB 40 time. He also put up 27 reps, the second best vert at 40". And he was a top performer in the 20 yard shuttle.
I guess another guy we can look at is Kahlil Bell as a UDFA. A ran a slow forty and he had senior year that didn’t garner him a lot of accolades because he was hurt a lot and because that offensive line was just beyond horrible. But he’s a really tough runner and his change of direction is good as indicated by his top performing times in the 3 cone and 20/60 yard shuttle times. He’s also got great balance.
This is a video of what he looks like when he’s healthy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kufafbCxdcI (That’s the same Stanford team that soon after defeated USC.)

by Ewdtrey on Feb 22, 2009 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

Kory Sheets

I don’t really know where Kory is projected to go, but probably late draft or UDFA. He had a 4.4 forty time, and is good at catching the ball out of the backfield, as he demonstrated in Purdue’s pass happy offense.

by Bestjagfan on Feb 22, 2009 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

Unfortunately

I don’t think he’ll last that long.

by Ewdtrey on Feb 23, 2009 12:15 AM EST up reply actions

I watched the Kahlil Bell video

That last run where 8 guys hit him reminded me of Fred Taylor against Indy.

O and speaking of DT's

Tyson Jackson weighed in at near 300 lbs. At that size he could be an awesome DT like Jason Jones is for the Titans, though Jones is a better pass rusher, I think Jackson will be better against the run.
The More I look at the draft the more I want to trade down. There is some great value in the bottom third of the first round. If we could trade down and come out of the first 2 rounds with Jackson, Beatty/Britton/Oher(or which ever OT last till the end of the 1st round), and Alphonso Smith; we could be talking about being real playoff contenders again. That’s almost like getting 3 first round talents to me. Talk about a block buster draft before even getting to a possibly great third round draft.

by Ewdtrey on Feb 22, 2009 6:09 AM EST reply actions

I am beginning to see the same thing

I’ll have a couple more names to throw in the pile son. Two second round selections and a first round would be wonderful right now.
