Free Agency Open Thread: Brad Meester and Scott Starks Re-signed, Reggie Williams ruined his Pay Check

Let's talk about Free Agency:  As the day develops, even though the Jaguars will probably abstain from the market, I'd like to keep an open thread of signings and other activity.  I'll be updating throughout the day.

What moves are you watching?

Safeties

What about Sean Jones or Jermaine Phillips? There’s a lot of better safeties out there than Considine.

Another SS.

I’m not really sure if the Ravens kept Brian Leonhard, but if he is a free agent he could be a good pickup who could start and fill the role for Sensy. He wouldn’t demand that much in a contract, but the guy can play. He had an interception and a fumble recovery just in the post season.

Purely Depth

Thanks for the memories Fred, the #1 back on my roster

I see that

Meester was resigned.

Free agents =

band-aides.

I don’t think we’ll have heard of many of the free agents that get signed this year. They want to build through the draft and unsigned players. That means temporary patches if they’re serious about it.

Good for Fred. I dislike the Pats, but it’s probably his best chance to get a ring, and some recognition.

Interesting stuff

Either tonight or tomorow I’ll put up a chart of who’s been resigned, who’s signed elsewhere, etc

If nothing else...

I’m glad Haynesworth is out of the division. I think the Jaguars will feel a little more confident running up the middle twice a season now.

AWAY

Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Cleveland Browns

So yes, we do.. thats gonna be a weird game to watch..

Yeah, he sure wasn’t…

I think he got kind of a bad rap here. He did pretty much flop as a starter, but he was a very good special teams player.

by JasonB on Feb 27, 2009 3:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

We bought a bad starter?

But a good special teams player? We must be thinking of taking Quentin Groves off Special Teams.

Maybe not

There are a lot of people that can be moved off ST. So far Estandia hasn’t been resigned as far as I know. Mike Walker may not play ST anymore because of playing time and injuries. Pierson Prioleau wont be back. We also need more depth at S. etc…It’s just to hard to tell. Personally I still don’t think Groves will be a starter barring injury or Hayward being cut.

Ok, it's not a total yard sale.

Meester’s coming back. And so is Brian Iwuh. At least they’re not firing everybody over there.

Unfortunately, the truth only comes out game-by-game.

Starks!

I agree. He’s a really good player. I hope they keep him around. But, will he be asking for a notoriously-high Cornerback deal? Those guys know how to go after the cash.

Unfortunately, the truth only comes out game-by-game.

Yeah they sure do

I was just reading on the Times-Union site that Del Rio said the guys he was targetting to get back in free agency were Meester and Starks. One down, one to go.

Starks is a great asset......

Too bad he was injured last year, cause he was the only Cb besides Rashean that was prepared to keep up with a man-to-man scheme……….

by jaxjags.. on Feb 27, 2009 3:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

His injury may be a blessing

in disguise. If he did end up playing really well in a contract year he could have played himself on to another team, because we couldn’t afford him.

JagNation told me Meester's contract is 2 years at around 10 mil.

not bad for a 10 year vet. If he doesn’t play well this year then I suspect Our remorseless and cold leader will put him out to pasture before his two years are up.

If he plays good,

My view

about the changes: Starks and Meester, I’m glad the Jaguars keep them. Spicer, sorry to see him go, but he was one of the players that got old last year. Wish him luck, cause he did very good things for this team.
Fred, as i said this deal can mean him a ring, recognition, and maybe the jim Brown line. Which could means HOF, the 1st HOF from the Jaguars! The only sad thing is he will most likely play against us this season.
And this Eagle safety, well let’s wait until the deal is done, and if he will become a Jaguar, then I wish him to improve here. But I hope we will sign a little bit better players too!

More "news"

I just saw that Shawn Springs CB got released. He could be a good pick up.
Gerald Sensabaugh and Khalif Barnes are going to visit the Saints. Might have something to do with Greg Williams being there and Stinchcomb being a FA.

by Ewdtrey on Feb 27, 2009 6:41 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

He'd probably be expensive

I was thinking about it too. It’s a similar situation as the Drayton Florence situation and getting Springs would probably require a similar contract.

by Ewdtrey on Feb 27, 2009 6:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No doubt he'd be better

I’m not arguing that he’d be a Drayton Florence. I just don’t see the Jaguars throwing that kind of money in free agency again.

by SoCalStites on Feb 27, 2009 6:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You're

probably right.
However he’d probably ask for less money than B Williams, in which case I would think twice about who I’d rather have on the team. The lack of a starting SS may give B Will the edge though. That and we know what we are getting with Will.

Im not surprised that many of you dont know who sean considine is but he is a good football player. he played for the iowa hawkeyes and I know gator fans are kind of oblivious to anybody other than their players but sean blocked a punt in the outback bowl which was the play of the game. considine played with bob sanders, dallas clark, matt roth and others who very few people knew or still know. a very underated iowa team who spanked and shocked the gators in 2004 with a great bunch of athletes that mostly got little star respect just because they played for the hawkeyes and considine was among them.

sean considine is a good player. knowing what philly has done to people and the surroundings Im just guessing considine wanted the hell out of that city. he was undrafted but he eventually got into the starting lineup. I wouldnt discredit him just because he lost his starting job. the guy is a good football and tough. Im very sad to see he is signing with jax because I would have loved for the colts to get him as a back up.

by kinnickcolt on Feb 28, 2009 7:30 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

As a supposed expert on Sean Considine I would have guessed you would have known he was a 4th round pick, not undrafted.

by JasonB on Feb 28, 2009 10:30 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I am completely lost???

I know Gene Smith is calculating and he has a closely guarded hand, but for the life of me, can’t figure out his plan? Is it all young and cheap guys? Then I see some O-line additions in April, in fact an ‘O’ draft. Is this the end of “run the ball – stop the run”?

by Jaghomer on Feb 28, 2009 8:21 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

No, not at all. Gene Smith first of all believes in building through the draft. “It’s a young man’s game.” About the cheap signings. Gene and Mr. Weaver said that they were not going to get free agents that were expensive. You saw what happened last year. Before you jump off the band wagon, lets see what Gene does through the draft. In the 1st round we might get a LT or someone like Maclin. The Jags are very interested in DJ Moore, which would be a great second round pick if he slips to us, and if we get a few more second round picks, I would like us to get someone like Patrick Chung and/or Nicks. So lets wait. Plus, it’s only one day in the free agency. Let’s wait to see what he does. Give him a chance to prove himself.

by ajagsbeliever on Feb 28, 2009 9:26 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

"good sign"

This Considine signing, well every forum I went in the few hours(even in Hungarian NFl forums) wrote the guy is simply garbage as a safety. Well, I will wait until he plays in a couple of regular season game to judge him(If he makes the final roster…), but so far this was not beginning of the reset/retool/rebuild-anyhow they call it process.
But I wish, we have the last laugh on it
(and by the way I read he is not that bad in special teams)

by Zoltan from Budapest on Feb 28, 2009 10:00 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Laugh

There are 1-2 sites where you can find "hardcore"’ fans from hungary. One reply was for the Considine signing from an Eagles fan there: “GOD exists!!!”…which is. Another Eagles fan wrote: “he was a good ST player, but every time he steped on the field as a safety recently, migh pulse went much higher”…
These aren’t the words I wanna read from a fresh signing, are you?

"he was a good ST player, but every time he steped on the field as a safety recently, MY pulse went much higher"…

by Zoltan from Budapest on Feb 28, 2009 11:29 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Like I said earlier, Considine was a flop as a starter here. Now maybe in the Jags system under their coaching he can become an effective starter. He didn’t work here, doesn’t mean he can’t work elsewhere.

But I also said that he was a very good special teamer.

by JasonB on Feb 28, 2009 10:35 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And now with Mel Tucker

who is a defensive back specialst, who knows, maybe he can teach to guy.
Let’s hope it will happen.
By the way thanks for the view about Considine.

by Zoltan from Budapest on Feb 28, 2009 11:27 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think

Maybe thats what they brought him in to do, play special teams and add depth. But then again, I’m not sure if they will let Considine compete for the job in camp. Or maybe he is the Jags fix at the position. Either way, I have to see him play in pre-season before I can judge him.

by Bestjagfan on Feb 28, 2009 11:26 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

exactly

I really doubt the Jaguars went and gave a 2 year, $3 million contract to the guy they plan on starting at safety. This is just for depth at the position

by SoCalStites on Feb 28, 2009 11:52 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I know this doesn't have anything to do with us

but the Patriots just traded Matt Cassel to the Chiefs

by SoCalStites on Feb 28, 2009 1:04 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Because the Jags will play with the Chiefs this year

It has impact on us. If it’s true, then Pioli will bring the Chiefs reeeeal quick to a contender team.
It seemed that the Chiefs are the weakest from that division. All of sudden they can be a dangerous team. Bad news for us.

by Zoltan from Budapest on Feb 28, 2009 1:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not a big surprise

I’m not as sold on Cassel as others. There’s a reason he never started a game after high school until Brady went down last year. It helped the Pats played in a weak division.

"I smoke. If this bothers anyone, I suggest you look around at the world in which we live and shut your mouth."-Bill Hicks

by Jonathan Loesche on Feb 28, 2009 1:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Same here

I’m not super freaked out about it because quarterback was not the only issue for the Chiefs last season and they still have many pieces to go. Also Cassel had a good year this season but it wasn’t amazing. There’s a good chance that his flaws were masked by the offense of the Patriots.

by SoCalStites on Feb 28, 2009 2:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It does have something to do with us for draft reasons

If they traded their 3rd pick then the Patriots will be picking instead and even if they didnt there is no chance they take a QB so that might shake up the first round

by kterr on Feb 28, 2009 2:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

There's no way

I’m guessing a 2nd and a late round pick like a 5th or 6th

by SoCalStites on Feb 28, 2009 2:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Only 1 second rounder

I think this is a steal for the Chiefs but according to Peter King at SI.com the Cheifs are getting both Cassel and Vrabel for the 34th pick overall….thats it i guess. The one thing it does for us though is give us another team to possibly trade with on draft day because they have three second rounders.

by kterr on Feb 28, 2009 2:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It seems like there has to be something else to it

I don’t see why the Patriots would trade Vrabel and Cassel for a 2nd. It’s an early 2nd, I know, so it’s pretty much a late 1st rounder but still. There should at least be some sort of compensation in a later round.

by SoCalStites on Feb 28, 2009 2:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It would be

Unreal if they traded their 1st for Matt Cassel. Thats kind of high pick for a career backup who just had a breakout year. The Chiefs have to keep in mind that Cassel could be a one year wonder. And he had great weapons like Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Kevin Faulk, and even Jabar Gaffney. The only real receiver the Chiefs have is Dwayne Bowe.

by Bestjagfan on Feb 28, 2009 3:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Antonio Smith was just signed by the Texans

that concerns me. Now they’ll have two quality pass rushers coming off each edge.

by SoCalStites on Feb 28, 2009 3:49 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

They Could Be The New Darkhorse

Of the AFC South. The Texans are pretty close to having a Super Bowl bound team. A high octane offense, great D-line, franchise linebacker, and a big play special teams unit, not to mention arguably the best receiver in the NFL. If they fortify their defensive secondary(which will dramatically improve because of their new found pass rush specialists), they may be able to overtake the Colts this upcoming year. It really makes me worried for the Jaguars, who always seem to have trouble beating the Texans anyway.

On the bright side, I don’t see the Titans having the same success they did last year. Kerry Collins is getting older and their defensive line just doesn’t play the same without Haynesworth.

by Bestjagfan on Feb 28, 2009 4:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Maybe it will be Houston’s year. Of course, if Schaub can stay healthy. Now, that they traded Rosenfels to the Vikings, they have no real backup QB right now. But I would be not surprised, if they ended up as 1st in ’09 in the AFC South.

by Zoltan from Budapest on Feb 28, 2009 5:54 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Good Point

They may need to grab a quarterback in the draft. Or maybe The Texans will bring Quinn Gray back.

by Bestjagfan on Feb 28, 2009 7:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

or maybe we are awesome for no reason :)

yeah theyll woop us

surreal to be teal

by Surteal on Feb 28, 2009 7:57 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I'm Not Saying

That either. The Texans’ defense needs to get it together. They really do have so much defensive talent, yet they don’t play good run or pass defense. They have all the pieces in place, in all three areas of the game, if they could put it all together, they could be dangerous.

I’m going to stay optimistic and hope they don’t find a way to put it together

Go Jags!
