Would This Trade Make Any Sense?
I'm of the opinion that Quentin Groves isn't a good fit on this team. I don't believe he can be an every down defensive end and seems to be out of place. I'm curious, what does everyone think of a trade that would send Groves to Kansas City for Tamba Hali.
Groves may be a better fit as a 3-4 OLB. I do recall Auburn tried him at LB but I believe that was in a 4-3 scheme.
As far as age Hali is 25 (26 in early Nov) but unlike Groves, who is 25 and going into his second year, Hali is going into his fourth NFL season. He's also been a durable player that's logged a lot of starts since entering the NFL. He's proven that at 6'3, 275 he can play the run and rush the passer as an every downs player. Other than that Hali is a hard working type that's a mature player too. Sounds like a good personality fit for Gene's Jaguars.
Wild though out of nowhere and that's where this idea may end up, nowhere. Although I am curious about what everyone would think about the trade idea.

He is reportedly up 20 pounds
Last year he was a paper tiger. This year he may be a force. He wants to play DE not LB. He wants it bad enough to bulk up. Let’s see what he brings this year. I think he can become a spark plug for the defense and a fan favorite. Stand by on you opinion for a bit, Groves hasn’t spoken in 2009 yet.

I didn't know.
Groves had bulked up that much. In that case I’m willing to give him another season.
Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Fred Taylor. Sounds about right.
jville
you sound rediculous. He barely played in his FIRST SEASON, but you’re giving him “another season” ?

You're Just Mad
Because Auburn has beaten Florida the past two times they played. Harvey is from Florida, Groves from Auburn, Its okay man, Auburn even dominates Florida in the NFL as well.
:)

Thanks.
It’s a talent I have. I can sound ridiculous without even trying.
I was saying if Groves stays around 255 he isn’t a good fit but if he bulks up to 275 or so I’ve got no problem giving him another season. I wasn’t aware he had bulked up THAT much.
Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Fred Taylor. Sounds about right.
That means the Cat has really been working HARD
He already had low body fat %, and that means he added 20 lbs of muscle… where did you find this out Terry?

I had sports radio on last night
I think it was 1010XL and someone mentioned it. I was half paying attention but that perked me up. You are right, that is a lot of effort. I think he has determination all over him.
Of course, the caveat here is this is second hand information so it needs to be verified. I am assuming what i heard from someone I don’t remember is right.

No way would I trade Groves...
Just go watch the Oklahoma drills to see Quentin “Lion-heart” Groves.
That cat may be a serious force this season.
The End Is Nigh... www.infowars.com
I Watched All Of His Auburn Games
And it was in a 4-3 scheme that they tried to put him at linebacker. It didn’t really work all that well. He was all right, but nothing special enough to make the move permanent. I think he can turn out to be a great pass rush specialist, and eventually a right end someday.
Like Collin said above, the guy has a lot of heart, and he really plays a lot bigger than he is. If it is true he is up 20 pounds, that would mean he is around 270, which is perfect size. And if he can keep that same speed, even more dangerous.

I'm glad someone else......
sits around and thinks about different trade and draft scenarios. I think both Groves and Harvey will show great improvement and if we get a bad ass tackle to line up next to Big John, our defense will be on its way back. What would be a really cool scenario is if the Jags trade down with 8th pick to maybe 17th for an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick. Then trade down with the 17th to around 25th for another 3rd pick. We would have 5 picks in about the first 100 players drafted and we could use the 25th pick overall for BAP, knowing we have 4 more early picks to fill needs. I know nothing like this would likely happen but after what the Jags did by trading up for Harvey, who knows?
I like that idea.
If we could trade down twice in the first round and grab some serious extra picks in the first three rounds I’m all for that.
Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Fred Taylor. Sounds about right.
The more trades back the better
I love the depth of players in this draft and the more the merrier is basically my philosophy for this April.

That Would Be Sweet
If they could trade back to 17, and then to anywhere in the 20s. You could still get good players later in the first. In my opinion, there is more talent late in the first than in early in the first. The more picks the better

I think that it is even better
To see the Jaguars getting a good mix of old and young. With Heyward, Tra Thomas, Meester and other veterans on the team, they begin to create a certain culture which is the Jaguars: run the ball, stop the run and smash mouths while you are doing it. I am so excited to get to the draft just to see how much value Gene Smith adds to OUR team. I know this is a little overboard, but I think I just got goosebumps.
too early to tell
it takes time sometimes to develop im looking for him and derrick harvey to have a breakout year.
Minus the penalties...
Q. Groves had solid play in his first year. That says something. If I was Mel, I would show films of the ball being snapped, run snapping drills, explain the development of the football from a soccer ball.
The man has passion and shows skills. I don’t think it was a waste of a second pick.
Doubt it but i like the thought
Hali is the only player the chiefs have on the defensive line. For a team that set an nfl record for fewest sacks in a season they are going to keep there best dline player. I like the idea of trading groves but how much value does he actually have ?
Quinton Groves attended one of my Games a few weeks ago, and he has put on some weight, he is alot bigger now, then he was last year…

If Its True
That he is up 20 pounds, then he should be around 275.

Why hasn't anyone considered the fact that
Kansas City has no incentive at all to make this trade. Hali is undersized too, so they could just as easily keep him and turn him into an OLB. Not only that, but when you have a player that has proven himself with seasons of 8 and 7.5 sacks, why would you trade him away for a player that has proven himself with about 1000 offside penalties?
by MoveThoseChains on Mar 25, 2009 12:01 PM EDT reply actions
I'm not sure
if I would consider him undersized at 275 which is pretty thick for only being 6’3". Not to mention at OLB he’s a little slow, as he’s only about a 4.9 40 guy.
Also, he has not proven himself since Jared Allen has left. He only had 3 sacks last year. Granted that’s partly because everyone else sucked so badly, but they are just as bad at LB if not worse, not to mention they are old at LB.
