Which needs more help...offense or defense?
All this talk of the draft has got my head spinning! Who are the Jaguars going to take? Plenty of media outlets have the Jaguars selecting a QB, which is (as we know) puzzling but a nice twist to what's expected. But the really big-dog, national "know nothing about the Jaguars" media has us selecting Crabtree. BARF! How many times can we go to the well before we realize it's dry?
Where does this leave Jaguars' fans? Still confused. Awaiting another slow, technical draft day, that makes us feel like football is near again. Yet it's merely a ruse to sell advertising. The event would be just as exciting if you had a .rtf file emailed to you the next day with the results listed.
And now for the finale...think back to last season, and maybe the one before that...
Regarding the Jaguars, which side of the ball needs more help? Offense or defense? Do we need to keep the chains moving more? Or do we need the defense to get off the field on third downs? Is MJD a threat to score from anywhere on the field? Or is a polished passing attack from our opponent more of a threat?
Thoughts?

Defense
The offense has a lot of pieces in place and just needs an O Line youth movement to allow the big time skill players the room to make things happen.
Defense has a strong core of linebackers and some promising young ends, but needs some help in the secondary and definitely needs some help at the tackle position. It’s pretty equal when you think about it actually. Both sides have a strong core that needs help around them to show their stuff, but I’m still going to stick with the defensive side.

It doesn't matter. BAP
But I’d say the Defense. It is abysmal.

Not necessarily about the draft.
Just an overall evaluation. Which side needs more work?
Unfortunately, the truth only comes out game-by-game.

I'd say offense... we have no credible WR threat...

I would say offense, we need Receivers, another RB and help on the O line. Defense could use a tackle and some secondary help. Actually they’re about equal now that I think about it. But they do say Defense wins championships, so who knows.

As bad as we need WR's and O-Linemen
Our defense has been in shambles for the last year and some of the year before. If the defense/secondary can stiffen up and we can draft a gem, the jags could get by scoring 17 pts a game instead of having to score 17 points in the 4th quarter.

DEFENSE
We need another cornerback, bad. That is, if we keep Brian Williams at safety. I know he moved back to corner last season, but I think he plays both positions pretty well. I like him at safety, though, and I’d love to see a dynamic corner added to the team. Need a tackle.
I don’t think we need a running back though. I have faith in Greg Jones.

I Think
Brian Williams can move back to corner. I’d like to see Shaun Considine given a shot at SS. However, I think it would be great to have another shutdown corner, and keep Brian Williams at SS.

A good pass rusher will make average CB's look good - look to the D line first.

I Know It's BAP
But I think the d-line has received enough attention. If the Jags go defense in the first, take a DT. But in the second I would really like to see Alphonso Smith or Patrick Chueng in teal next year.

Why do you think that? Chris did a piece on him and absolutely loves the kid. Check the BCC draft page and read up on him, if you havent already.
Just curious though, why is he over-rated…

How Do You
Call a second rounder overrated? I’ve actually watched as much film as I could on Chung and I think he would be great in the second.

Curious...
When you say “I’ve actually watched as much film as I could” have you ever come across a film on his on-field faults, like bad routes ran or couldnt breakaway from a CB? This actually applies to every player, not just BestJag’s comment.

sold on Considine
I don’t really know much about Considine other than he was a backup for Philly. But, please feel free to inform me. Why would we take a back up from another team and make him our starter? Seems like the same case where our starters go to other teams and get beat out by undrafted rookies (Miami).
by Blair72 on Mar 30, 2009 5:19 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Because Considine
Had Brian Dawkins in front of him. Considine should get a shot a SS in camp, if he is not the answer, put him back on special teams and keep BW at SS.

Defense
A good Defense gives a young Offense time to grow. It gives them more plays per game and keeps the score managable. If both sides of the ball needed work , I would build through the Defense. Although I would also keep my eye on the O-line. Later on you can plug in offensive skill positions when it starts to come together.

Look at Baltimore...
Their great defense has kept their often horrible offense in decent standing year in and year out. I believe if we can build a credible and reliable defense we should be set to have a decent year. Once we get our guards back we’ll be much better on offense. Also I can see our pass rush being much better next year. It better be. I hope we can trade back and pick up a corner or DT in round one, although if Stafford falls to us at # 8, I’m sold on taking him. It’s not that I don’t believe Garrard is our guy right now, but we need to groom a guy for 2-3 years down the road.

Offense
O line still needs much upgrading / replacements and we have NO WR threats. The defense also is hurting, but ball control will help defense stay fresh. You know the old saying – the best defense is a strong offense.
Don’t misunderstand – we are in serious need of defensive help. The problem with the Jags is that we have so MANY holes on both sides of the ball, it’s difficult to peg. D line needs a solid / consistent pass rusher (and we don’t have one). Maybe one of last year’s rookies will emerge (and maybe they won’t).
Anyway – Offense is my pick. No O line means no rushing game (regardless of who is RB) and we have no WR corp (pending FA and draft / trades). If you can’t move the ball or score any points, you’re not gonna win consistenly.

Sorry..
But hasn’t Wr been a need around here for a while? We were successfull without them then because of our great Defense and steller ofensive line play. W e can get Wrs when we really need them. But we can win with out them.

I don't live in Jacksonville
I live in Arizona. But…..he is not going to be a good NFL quarterback. Mark my words. As far as his moral character and all of that…..it’s perfect. whatever. He’s a good guy. But, he will never win a superbowl. I don’t like his release. I don’t like anything about him. And the fact that so many Jags fan slobber on his b-sack makes me cringe.
And I don’t think he will be as high of a prospect as many UF fans think. I might ge wrong about that though.
by Blair72 on Apr 1, 2009 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
While he is a good player, he will never own his own SB ring. You gotta realize this though, he is the " hometown boy making good", here in Jax. So thats why you hear everybody on his sack, he’s a great college career and he will be a very good pro aswell, but he wont be a Montana, Aikman or Brady.
Personally, I think some team will bite and draft him high, i could be wrong aswell.

If the Jags can trade back
I would say Peria Jerry too, we need lineman in both side of the ball. Then WR (one or two) and at least 1 or maybe 2 new guy to the secondary. Somewhere a LT and maybe a RB or a middle LB. I hope the Jaguars can find a team to trading down(maybe more time-and I’m more and more have a new candidate indtead of the Jets. What about Tampa?), because we need some extra picks in the 2nd-3rd round. And in the #8 there is nobody, which I would pay 18 million $ either…

This is my first post, guys...
… and I’m happy to be on board and look forward to the dialogue.
To answer the question, Defense, Defense, Defense… did I mention defense?
The Jags under Del Rio has always intimidated opponents with the D they brought to every game – I think last season has caused us to forget that b/c the defense lost the lead at the end of so many games last year.
We have 2 young studs at DE, and with the lack of production at DT (including Big John) I think that’s our biggest need this year. (Our OL should be healthy and productive again this year.)

Welcome at BCC
Enjoy yourself with a veeeery good Jaguars fans community here!
And you’re right, the Defensive line is a big issue, and I’m sure that the jaguars will address it (just please not with Raji!) via draft.

I don't see ANY studs at DE - to whom are you referring.
We bave unproven DE’s with 1 year under their belt – period. “Potential” – what a sucky word.

I'm not sold on Raji either...
… just as long as we get some help there.
I didn’t say Harvey & Groves were proven, but they are an upgrade over Spicer and Hayward going forward, and they did more last year than Henderson or Meier. They are the future DEs – like ‘em or not – who’s our future at DT?

Landri
for example, he was quite good, when he saw some action last season, I think Henderson can be still a force, and I hope he will be. But I think there will be some new guys in the D-lines via draft this year!

Ditto to everthing you just said...
except Henderson being a force – I hope he can but even with all his size and talent, his last 2 years have been suspect. He should have been our version of Albert Haynesworth!

I hope the front office will give him too! If he cannot prove in ’09, then (sadly) cut next year.

Word Zoltan
You’re a smart man. You should come work for our front office (just kidding, of course). But yeah, I say, give him one more year. Then try to trade him if he doesn’t do anything….get whatever you can…a 7th even. If no takers, cut him. It would probably be the latter, however. I could even see possible scenario where they get everything they can out of him this season so they can trade him after the season is over. But, I like Big John. Maybe the Buffalo or New Orleans would take him, right? They seem to be picking up alot of our castoffs. To respond to your other comment. Landri will never be nothing more than a situational player. He’s too small. But, I do like him. He plays with alot of heart.
Anyway, welcome JagGameFace.

Thanks guys, I feel welcome already.
I happen to agree with both of you guys. Hopefully he could step it up this year, but it may be better to trade him this year before he possibly puts up another so-so year. He may have some good years left, but it’s time to start drafting more DTs.
That’s funny, Blair72, Buffalo and New Orleans are starting to take all the Jaguars rejects! Maybe their head coaches should start wearing the sports jacket on the sidelines during the games too.
