Should we let time expire?
We have been discussing possible trade possiblities for a while and Denver seems to be a possible option, but lets say for a second that we can not get a trade partner allowing us to drop out of the Top 10. What to do now? Should we select the BAP? Personally I say if we can not find a trading partner we should simply let the clock expire...ala Minnisota Vikings.
Last Year Rookie Contracts:
#8 Derrick Harvey - 33.4 Million total possible money, 17.174 Million Guaranteed
#9 Keith Rivers - 23 Million total possible, 15.6 Million Guaranteed
#10 Jerod Mayo - 18.9 Million total possible, 13.8 Million Guaranteed
#11 Leodis McKelvin - 19.4 Million total possible, 12.6 Million Guaranteed
Available Players:
Now the players available at the #8 pick could vary a lot but it is probably safe to say that Stafford, Curry, Smith, Monroe and most likely Crabtree as well. If you take these 5 players off the board then the BAP at #8 could be the following players: Jeremy Maclin, Brian Orakpo, Mark Sanchez, B.J. Raji, Aaron Maybin and Everette Brown.
Personally none of these players in my opinion warrant paying a possible 33 million total, probably even more this year. If the Jaguars cant trade out of this position then if we simply let the clock expire then we could drop back to the 10th or 11th pick and pick up a Maclin, Maybin or Everette for almost 15 million less then at #8.

Wayne Weaver would get alot hate mail
from the other owners. I don’t think it’s the politically accepted thing to do. I think if you can’t trade, your stuck. Unless you act like Minnesota and say you forgot it was your turn or something…which nobody is going to believe…lol.
We all know Gene Smith is a preparation type of guy. I bet if he plans on wanting to trade down, he’s already got another GM signed up and waiting until the draft. He’s got a plan. He always speaks about not being unprepared. I’m excited to see what happens.

Nice Idea...But
I think its kind of unwritten law that you don’t purposely let time expire. If I remember The Vikings faced a lot of scrutiny for that.

I hope Wayne Weaver
must not pay once again that much or a little more. Another reason the jaguars MUST trade down.
We have Denver who seems to me wanna trade up for neither Raji or a DE, or Sanchez if he is aviable. The jaguars will not select Raji, the other teams might yes, so we are ideal partner, and the whole thing costs for them an extra 3rd, which they have.

Just make a stupid trade if necessary
You might as well give the #8 pick to Denver for their #12 and something stupid like a 5th or 6th. We’ll lose the trade, but we’ll get out of 8 and the Broncos can’t refuse a trade like that.

A stupid trade
is just that: stupid. If you’re going to lose the value of the pick, you might as well just pick whoever you were going to pick at #12 (worked well for Shack, huh?). You can’t just give away the draft pick because you don’t like it. You need to get something else in return, especially when you’re trying to rebuild.

People have been speaking of allowing the time to expire
The reason the Jaguars don’t want to pick at 8 is because of the huge contracts given to top 10 picks. At 12 the Jags could get very close to the same value as 8 without paying the same amount of money. Just by getting out of the #8 spot the Jags would win the trade in my mind. Any compensation that the Broncos would be willing to give, would be very nice to me. Obviously more the better, but whatever it takes to make it happen.

I'm Not Opposed
To losing some value off the “chart” as long as we get out of the eighth pick. I really don’t think anyone there is worth the money. Andre Smith would be a great option, but he is not top 10.

This is what profootballtalk had to say about the jags trying to trade back. It’s looking kinda shi.tty for us.
“As the 2009 draft approaches, several teams in the top ten actively are trying to trade out of it.
We’re hearing that this group includes the Lions, Chiefs, and Browns.
It also includes the Jaguars, whom we’re told are desperately trying to get out of the eighth overall spot in the draft.
But the Jags currently can find no takers.
Nor can any of the other teams in the top ten.
As one league source explained it, there are three issues making the top-ten teams want to get out, and keeping other teams from wanting to get in.
First, the money paid at the top of the draft has gotten out of hand. Even hard-core agent types who previously have argued with us about this issue are now admitting that the values of the contracts at the top of the process are too high.
Second, there’s no "bell cow" in the draft — no must-have player in the view of one or more teams.
Third, there’s no real separation between the top players at each position. For example, Michael Crabtree isn’t $20 million better than Hakeem Nicks. But if Crabtree goes within the first seven picks of the round and Nicks goes in the last ten, the dollar value of their respective contracts will entail a gap potentially that large, if not larger.
Ditto for the tackles and the quarterbacks.
So why take a guy at No. 2 when a comparable player can be gotten — for much less money — at No. 20?
In the end, this year’s experience could provide just enough ammunition to get a meaningful rookie wage scale implemented as part of the next CBA."

I think
Gene Smith knows his stuff. I know he has multiple options all ready getting lined up on which way he wants to go. Gene Smith is no rookie; he knows his stuff. Let’s just wait and see what he does on draft day. It’s getting very exciting!

Not Classy
to do that would show the rest of the league that the Jags have no class and we would loose respect with the rest of the owners

Terry,
As usual, you’ve boiled it down to just the right words. Pick the right guy and pay the right guy.

Man wouldn't it be something
If we could win some contest to sit in the jaguars draft room. I would love to see how all of this unfolds. Has anybody noticed that the unveiling of the new jersey coincides with the draft? i will be watching!
