Instead of trading for Boldin....

maybe the Jags should look into trading for Tony Gonzalez at tight end. I know this is supposed to be a rebuilding year but in today's NFL, teams can rebuild really quick. If we could get him for a good price, our passing game would be on the immediate rise. Add Torry Holt (if he ever signs) and a top notch rookie wide receiver and our anemic passing offense might not be so laughable.

Why

Is everyone so enamored with trading away picks?? Gene’s philosophy is to build through the draft and you can’t do that if you trade away all your picks for high-priced veterans. We must attempt to acquire more draft picks, not squander them away in trades. How do you think Indy, NE and Pitt have been so successful over the years? Because they acquire talent through the draft. They trade away franchise players to get more picks. Picks are the lifeblood of any team.

Exactly

And especially for the TE position. That’s one of the few positions that really doesn’t need to be addressed.

Don't forget that the Patriots also

work through trades as well. They do it all. But it works for them. Regardless, however, you are totally correct. Those three teams are who we need to emulate while we’re “remodeling” the team.

Gonzalez is more of a receiving TE...

and I did say for the right price. Even the Patriots don’t build entirely thru the draft, they are successful because they do both, they acquire draft picks and they pick up proven veterans like Dillon, Moss, Seau, Galloway, Taylor, etc. If we were to pick up a tight end that can get open and actually catch it will take the pressure off the wide receivers. Anyway, it was just a thought I came up with trying to kill time until the draft gets here. And just because I suggest 1 trade for a veteran doesn’t mean I’m enamored with trading away picks.

lets accumulate picks not trade them away

I agree with JagHack. The Jags need to build thru the draft and not trade picks for players whose best days are behind them.

His past 2 seasons he has averaged 98 receptions..

so I don’t think he’s over the hill yet. The Jags can use veteran leaders just as much as rookie talent. With that said, I agree, youth is the right way to build.

I Dont...

Want to trade for Gonzalez, but his “best” years aren’t behind him. He is still a pretty good threat, especially in the red zone.

Thats Good For Another Jacksonville... First Down.

Lets get young...

Why did we just cut all this age back if we are going to keep signing geriactrics?

Do not trade your future

to some small successes in the present. Remember Brett Favre’s case anyone? But I can name a couple more names as well…

The Patriots don't trade picks

They trade for picks. Then they use those picks to make a better team than yours, and they fill holes with free agents that they didn’t have to give up anything for. It’s a very important distinction. Ask yourself if the Patriots would ever dream of giving up any draft pick for a 33-year-old tight end with his best football years behind him. The answer is no.

I agree with your point

But the Patriots have traded away draft picks for old guys past their prime. Just two years ago they gave away a pick for a 30 year old receiver supposedly past his prime.

Yeah, a fourth round pick.

If we could get Tony Gonzalez for a 4th round pick I would say get him. But that isn’t going to happen.
