Sanchez/Financial ramifications.

Relevant article regarding Broncos/Sanchez/trade possibilities. Again, it's all conjecture, and it's nothing everyone doesn't already know, but it does sum up all the known parties interested in Sanchez.
Mark Sanchez drawing interest blah blah blah...
Similiar article from a Jets perspective
Looks like interest will be high regardless of Sanchez's availability. Eight doesn't seem to be as bad of a spot as we had thought. The salary drop-off generally begins at eight and nine, so teams might be far more willing to move up into the eighth spot than higher spots. Here are the list of first round contracts from:
2005
2006
2007
2008
With the exception of Antrelle Rolle's 2005 rookie contract with Arizona, there is usually a sizable drop in contract value and guaranteed money between picks seven and eight.
Happy birthday to us.
P.S. - If the trend holds true, whoever picks at eight should expect to pay somewhere around $19 mil guaranteed/27 mil 5yr value/36 mil max, unless the Redskins move up. In which case we can expect $50 mil guaranteed/71 mil 5yr value/95 mil max.

This is madness.
but looking at the previous contracts, that actually seems to be right in line with where it should be. The only difference being the Lions didn’t get an early signing discount.
Looks like a shack harris deal to me
has his crazy over spending written all over it

They might be twins.
The share a history of overspending, bad management, and failed first round picks. But lets hope Harvey, Lewis, and Nelson don’t fall into that category. I mean, even Mayhew has hit on Calvin Johnson.
Good call, I had totally forgotten about Matt Millen.
When you think about it, Mayhew didn’t overpay as much as people are making it out to be. He’s basically paying market value. It’s a pretty reasonable increase considering Stafford is a qb, and he’s the first pick. Compared to JaMarcus Russell and Matt Ryan’s contracts, it’s completely in line.
Definitely
I actually commend him for the way he negotiated this contract. He didn’t allow Stafford’s agent to hold him hostage and he forced them to take a reasonable deal. Very well played.
Agreed.
I get a feeling that goes for both sides. Stafford camp knew the Lions wanted Stafford, and accepted a reasonable (relative to first pick contracts) contract. Even considering all that posturing with the backup contracts, it was pretty obvious who the Lions wanted.
You know what?
I wish I could wake up one day and somebody sign me to a 78 million dollar contract. I mean, how in the hell can a guy get paid 41 mil guaranteed without even working for it? I know it’s market value, but they have to do something about this. I am a Stafford fan, but who knows how he’s going to do with the Lions over the next few years. No one else has been able to do anything in Detroit. That place ruins a quarterbacks career before they even start. Largest contract in history and he has never played in the NFL. Gotta love it.
Yeah man.
It’s been out of hand for a few years now. I just never understood why being picked early entitles anyone to a big contract. I mean seriously, why the hell are the rookie contracts growing faster year over year than veteran contracts. I think they should just grow at the rate of inflation, or match GDP growth, which certainly was not 8% or so this past year.
